I like Sha Na Na and Johnny's voice is unique!!!

    and I'm a 15-year-old guy!

    Definitely love this music!

  • Flashbacks 8th grade dance yes I pulled it off and yes it was worth it Aww the good ol days

  • This guy is not gay. Not like it would make any difference.

  • is this guy gay? im just asking

  • @deadmua5dude The 80's were just weird...

Still a good "50's" style song though

  • Was this performance before or after the movie of grease was released?

  • i love Johnny forever!

  • CCCCCCAAAAAAminorFFFFGGGG777777, what that playing on the radio? why do I keep swaing to and foro.....

  • Grandiose Choreographie!! ;-))

  • What a feeling being a teenager then, butterflys in your stomach dancing with your girl. Best damn music you could hear then. Oh God I wish those days were back again....................

  • gran cancion

  • just love this one soo much! xoxo

  • this is wow what a voice.rock on johnny

  • People could wear those closes because they werent worried about being called gay. Nothing against gays but its true. They definitely pulled'em off though. Which is awesome.

  • I don't listen to any other artist's rendition of "Magic Changes" except Contardo's. Everyone else sucks at singing it.

On a sidenote, why oh WHY were clothes like that EVER the fashion?

  • 00:25 cuts out. Can only presume he said 'I have never fucked that song before'!!

  • Johnny reminds me of Billy Crystal

  • I got the role of Doody in my schools musical of Grease this year. I have to sing this. Never sang in my life. I'm scared. At least I can play the 4 chords. xD

  • @ralyt Good luck man, that's an awesome song. Go for it and have fun, you'll remember it always

  • (2:05) Woah-Hooh Yaaaaaaaaa! Whoooooo-Hooo-Ooo-Whoo-Hooooo-Ho-Hoooooooooooooo check. Banging bass player check. Hella chorus backing Johnny check. Bang the song out just like the day we recorded it in the studio check. White guys then sung with more soul than the black singers these days. And I'm black so it's not racist. :)

  • cant go a day without a dose of my favourite medicine.....Johnny xx

  • johnny voice is sooo breathtaken. i love it....thank you

  • .."You know the cameraman?!".."Yeah, his name is Ted.."...

  • Try singing this song. It's not easy. You have to have to have a 3 octave range.

  • @Tonithenightowl You nailed it!! This guy hits'em all. Lows highs and everything in betweeen. That cant be easy.

  • @William1987GTA1 It isn't. He can still do the song at age 60 but not as easily as he did at 28. Most of us couldn't do it at all lol . Thanks for responding.

  • Johnny Contardo rules !!!

  • Singing this for my auditions tomorrow :)

  • andei procurando muito esta musica .. acho ela muito legal foi um hit no para e quando toca ate hoje ninguem fica parado !!! the best !!!

  • this is fabulous! i remember seeing this on TV when I was a little girl, with my sisters. our whole family watched Sha Na Na and I still love them. xo

  • This guy hits the lows the highs and everything in between. Amazing is the word I would use here. An amazing performance and I like how the camera man captured alot of the emotion in his face.

  • I would have loved to hear Johnny Contardo sing , "At The End Of The Rainbow". What an incredible voice!!!

  • thumbs up for the bassist..

  • Happy 27th Anniversaries dearest Shah Zarin...though life sucks like hell sometimes...I still love you like crazy...am always going to be F.U.B.A.R when it comes to loving you...muah...muah..muah...

  • this guy is singing live and he sounds just like the record! absolutely brilliant! that's what you call a singer! a brilliant one! all the stars in the world to this gentlemen!

  • @wanderer856 even today 2011 he still sounds the same!!

  • is that johnny contardo singing this song is from grease in it ...

  • @geoffdoor Why, yes it is!

  • what a singer absolutley brilliant

  • Saw these guys in concert in 1983, Lake Tahoe. Along with the show, no way I can say anything other than what a collection of talents. Fantastic!

  • Johnny said he wanted to write a modern doo-wop song just like from the 50's and he did: in the 70's. Thats why this song is special.

  • I love this man! Amazing!

  • I dont know how to sing and im playing doody in my school play, how the hell am i gonna learn this :O

  • thumbs up if you thought you were getting cell phone interference when he started singing

  • Bowser....haha. I love this group

  • Johnny Contardo's voice is so rich and unique - it gives me goosebumps!

  • @sshelget Wow . . . I love this song. His voice is just amazing, beautiful, prefect control.

  • @mizzcherrylipz It's 70s style so fuck off

BTW Great song. Not nowdays music...

  • @Skyliner89 It's actually 50's style... Made in the 50's.

  • there is no place to take a breath in this song, this man must have gills

  • to sara

  • Yep, only the truly GREAT Johnny Contardo could pull this off.

  • Do you know how hard this is to sing? That's why no one covered it.

  • @Tonithenightowl There less than have a second to take a breath here and there through the song, but you're completely out of air by the time you need to take another breath. And yes, this is a cakewalk for the likes of Johnny Contardo!

  • @kb6kgx It took a set of pipes and lungs that's for sure lol. I don't know if he does it these days, it may take a few more breaths to pull it off but in his prime he was off the charts fabulous. Thanks for responding. Always a pleasure to meet another Contardo fan. He's the best. Brought us some fabulous vocals.

  • @Tonithenightowl I can do a "fair" version of this, learned it from the original "Grease" Broadway album, and play the piano to my not-even-close-to-Contardo's-cat singing, but yes, it takes real breath control and I never had that. Always ran out of air.

  • @kb6kgx Well post it on youtube I would love to hear it. Johnny teaches voice now, so he knows all the methods for getting the most from a voice without damaging it.. However, his kind of voice can't be taught, you either have it or you don't, and the most he can do is teach one how to control it. Gene Pitney is another one that didn't have to be taught to use his voice it just came naturally, I'm sure Johnny was the same. The rest of us aren't so blessed lol.

  • TUDO DE BOM D +

  • BEEN TRYING TO FIND OUT WHO SINGS THIS SINCE THE 90'S GREASE WAS AND STILL IS THE SH*T!

  • I am one of the few teens who enjoy MUSIC.

    Long live the 70's!

  • I'm playing doody in our school's local production of grease. This man inspires me.

  • @TheHolyMarshmallow hi andy! it's Isaac

  • @mocar14 Whats up isaac

  • Still sends a thrilll

  • From the Movie Grease > This was the best song. Why wasn't it released?

  • Classic :)

  • Love his voice ;)

  • ME ENCANTA JOHNNY

  • Finally the song that get's cut off in Grease - Great job Johnny - wish you recorded on the radio

  • ICE CREAM CHANGES.

  • they bleeped out heard!!!!!!!!!!! realy!!!!!!!

  • @xs99sx No the audio just dropped out. Wasn't censored at all.

  • do you think we will ever have a 60s/70s revival?, lyrics today arent nearly as meaningful, its all sex orientated studio enhanced bullshit. johnny contardo wouldnt be seen dead miming to his own songs, how did music get to the way it is today? im 24 by the way, and have been in love with this kind of music from birth, damn proud of it too.

  • @xXmikeywafc10xX

If you're 24, don't you remember the 90's? That 70's Show, Aviator Sunglasses, Bell Bottom Jeans, Austin Powers, That Thing You Do, Boogie Nights, The Brady Bunch Movie, The Wonder Years, John Travolta's comeback, Tom Jones, Cher, Woodstock '99, Feathery Haircuts... The 90's already had 70's nostalgia. And the Sha Na Na's are actually part of the 50's revival (Grease, Happy Days) of the 70's.

  • His version of "Tell Laura I Love her" may have been his best performance of all but this one is nothing short of spectacular!

  • I remember watching these guys on TV at 7:30pm I always love this guy's voice. He was my favorite.

  • Bowzer kind of reminds me of Tom Cruise

  • @brandy170 WTF?

  • Johnny Contardo has an incredible voice. This is one of my favorite Sha Na Na songs. This song makes me wanna watch Grease, which I happen to have on DVD. Johnny Contardo reminds me of a young Billy Crystal.. LOL!

  • La La La La <- multiple back up singer fail LOL

    the rest is undeniably fantastic

  • This brings back so many memories I use to watch this show in the 70s, I love this song and the way johnny sings it is the best I have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is an incredible talent!

  • I *love* this song and the way Johnny sings it. There's no better way to start the work day than Johnny singing this and a Starbucks in m y hand. Listening to this really improves my mood!

  • I am 42, and miss this music I heard on AM radio as a kid. Now, I'm a music man from Buddy's home town of Lubbock, Texas and l have loved this sound for years. We have Virgil Johnson of the Velvets that still lives here today. I've found that most people don't know that Sha Na Na was at Woodstock, and now that the fad is back again for teenagers, they are embracing this music. There is hope for the USA! Pull out your old vinyl and tapes and play them for your kids!!

  • Johnny has such a great voice ^-^ I love the way he sings

  • Johnny Contrado & Freddy Mercury, two best vocalists in the past forty years.

  • BEST of the songs at the dance in grease

  • It's like going up the scale slowly and with control. You don't hear this song done bc its so damn hard to do. Johnny Contardo owns this one.

  • @Tonithenightowl

As he owns EVERY song he sings!! He did say one time that this was the hardest song he ever sang!

  • @SkippyWalls Agreed. Johnny is one of the best tenors that ever belted out a song. His control is amazing. His breathing is amazing, his phrasing too. You can't sing a song like this if you don't have all those qualities. That's why few attempt to cover this song. Never heard another version that compares to Johnny's original.

  • lmao those background dancers...i love it

  • Anyone have Tabs for the bass line? :/ I need to learn this for a production :P

  • Anyone have Tabs for the bass line? :/ I need to learn this for a production :P

  • He is great. It is too bad that youn can not get a good copy of all the ballads he sang during his prime

  • This song is so amazingly beautiful it takes my breath away anytime

  • God, thank you for Johnny Contardo's beautiful voice..We love you Johnny

  • Great voice :D

  • He looks like my younger brother.

  • @ellsthorne20

Boy you said it!! Now thias was music!!

  • @ellsthorne20 I agree

  • @ellsthorne20 I totally agree

  • Singing this as a solo in choir for a Grease medley. Its seriously amazing

  • Johnny had one of the greatest voices of his day.

  • they look like yellow condoms

  • this is literally what half of the songs from this era are. Don't get me wrong it's a decent tune. It just kind of is the same... as 50% of the songs in its time period. The other 50% was 12 bars and 6/8 love songs

  • @Dayman712 Yes, and it doesn't get any better then that. You sound like a rap a dapper fan.

  • @stripemister i'm a jazz guy. i know that kind of music really defined a generation, and i mean no disrespect to the era

  • one of my favourite songs! Just love it!

    xx

  • How much better is the old music than todays one.

  • @FanCyMonDaY Not even in the same ballpark.

  • Shanana é simplesmente maravilhoso

  • This is FAB! Thx

  • Wait, was this song originally recorded for Grease or was it a single before?

  • I have been following "doo wop" music for about 55 years. Still love it today. When I first songs by Sha Na Na, I didn't take them seriously. I'm a purist and didn't feel they gave the songs the correct consideration. I felt they were recording bad cover versions. Because of you tube today I hear a singer like Johnny Contardo and can really appreciate his sound. Thanks

  • @Howieshet I had exactly the opposite experience. I'm a Doo Wop purist, but the first time I heard Sha Na Na, I knew they were very special in their own way. The first Sha Na Na number I heard was on their program. It was "Please Be My Girlfriend." It had different choreography than the version I currently see on YouTube, but good ole Bowser was there leading the charge. Do0 Wop is really the only music I understand. I have an understanding and appreciate for classical. But Doo Wop--So be it.

  • Oh wow ~ this video is SO rare. Brings me all the way back to kindergarten. 'Grease' is such a timeless film and soundtrack.

  • @rayva1: Nice gold suit.

  • Beautiful!:)

  • memories lol ..good song !!

  • Im singing the acoustic version for my school play, GREASE. So pumped

  • This will be played at my wedding <3333333

  • @twilightbestseries99 He and that song are so manly that it doesn't matter what kinda (godawfull) clothes he's wearing!

  • @twilightbestseries99 lol definitly not, pure beefcake all the way lol xx

  • Good song!!!!!!!!

  • this group was @woodstock, cool, huh?

  • yeah imagine Santini a doctor as of course we have lost Dan and chico! Johnny has had a cooking show. nade me smile every Saturday when they came on CBC! yes and real music!

  • those are some creepy outfits lol

  • THE GOLDEN LUME OUTFIT ROCKS!

  • There cannot be a better performer in existence than Johhny Contardo..

    Mind numbingly good.

God this is glorious. Timeless wonderment

  • @tscharf75 Couldn't agree more.

  • This is the PLAY-Drama version, not the movie version.

  • I just love his talent, its so natural, and honest.

  • i use to play this song everytime i have with me my guitar the chords are so simple yet the melody is so very strong i wish i was born during those days

  • Hes an awesome singer

  • im only 24 and i like all this music way betta then the crap thats out today.... this type of music will live on forever unlike todays crap lol

  • He had a great voice like the late Johnny Maestro of the Crests and Brooklyn Bridge. Their vocal ranges were unbelievable! Also; Johnny and Billy Crystal looked so much alike back then. Joe

  • Johnny had such a quality to his voice, that is not found in singers today. Not even the guys from New Kids on the Block, the ones that had tenor voices, can compare to Johnny's

  • This song always reminds me of Grease!

  • I love him!!! Have always loved Johnny :) :) He was my first crush, and I swore I was going to marry him - but mom kept reminding me that I was only six years old, LOL! Now that I'm in my mid-thirties, each time I see these videos it brings back great memories and the butterflies in my stomach return. Love him!!!

  • @katie8758 hey girl, get behind the rest of the Youtube ladies, when it comes to Johnny. We are Johnnyaholics and we don't want a cure lol. Welcome to the pack.

  • Viajo *-* , queria nascer nessa época :(

  • great singer!!

  • Best voice in the business.

  • It simply doesn't get any better than this.....
