This stuff is what supposedly inspired a lot of Bassists in Heavy Metal Bands, such as the Original Beefcake the Mighty in GWAR, and Joe Satriani's Satch Boogie Song, and perhaps the fuel for Black Sabbaths first Record.
@KinoPPete1 I always wondered what the difference is between the pieces, there are some changes melodically and in the harmonies, but with a style like jazz that's expected
The song is called Heaven must Have Sent You by The Elgins.
You can search it that way here. There is also a funk brothers version that is instrumental.. I think it is listed as Motown FUNK BROTHERS Heaven must have sent you.. If you feel daring also try Darling Dear by the Jackson 5.
That is Jamerson's most beautiful & may be his most difficult to play.
This guy's a natural at it, he's just dishin' out the best double bass man has ever had the pleasure of hearing while his band is swingin' right on with him and actually keepin up..damn..Charles Mingus is most definitely a legend and one of the best to have ever done it and this song proves that.
Mingus may have been a mean, ornery SOB, but there can be no question that he was a musical genius. The intricacies of his arrangements/compositions in Jazz, is comparable to that of a Mozart or Bach in Classical. I can't believe I grew up listening to Jazz (step-dad was a full time musician/mostly Jazz (Saxaphones (all) Flutes, Clarinet, Piano) I love it now, BUT, I only recently discovered Mingus.
Baaddest MF on the planet Charles Mingus!!!!

Our marching band closer, although somewhat changed. Our started at :28 and didn't have the Cello intro.
EmperorXaozx 3 months ago
@EmperorXaozx umm.... that is a bass. The cello is very rarely used in jazz, but Ron Carter has played cello on a few jazz albums
funkybassymf132 3 months ago
@funkybassymf132 I thought Cello was played in the start.

@EmperorXaozx Nah, that's Charles Mingus on the upright bass.

Can someone put a reference to this particular recording of Haitian Fight Song? What record/concert is it taken from?
KinoPPete1 4 months ago
@KinoPPete1 Never mind. It's actually II B.S. from Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus on Impulse. The Haitian Fight Song title threw me off.

This puts me in mind of those sophistcated P.I. TV show soundtracks of the late fifties. Swings hard and gritty.DAMN I love it!!!

This is one of the all-time underrated classics.
It swings so hard it makes me cry..
I remember first hearing this when i bought the mingus, mingus, mingus album.
This track & Eric Dolphy - Gazzelloni both changed forever the way I felt the groove.
