You really are a special guy, wish you could be mine:) you are so optmistic and you make me feel like there is more in this world than being afraid of people that are against people like us and decide with the first impression! Hope all is well buddy! Later and take care.
I hate to say this, but I dont think your dad is worthy to have you! Him not willing to accept your being gay or who you love is so sad. I'd love to have a son as delightful as you. Why is it that Christians who are supposed to have a foundation of love, grace, cant forgive, accept for quit judging anyone? Hang in there dude, your a great person!
We can't know that there even is a god, or know that there is a heaven or a hell and who goes there. The only thing we can do is accept ourselves for who we are and do what feels right. I do know that hiding and suppressing feelings is not the way to live a happy life.
Most gay men never find that long term relationship...I hope you find yours, you seems like a really nice guy...learn to cook! It will certainly help...someone's got to put a good meal on the table for the both of you! Start as soon a possible! Seriously...follow your heart...big hug!
Good luck and hang in there! Dad will eventually come around. After reading all these messages, I'm really happy to see so many people with such good advice and comments! Your lifes gonna be good and rich!
You're pretty brave I've got to say. I wish I could have the courage to lay it all out there to my family. I'm like you in that I don't think there was a time I ever doubted I liked guys more than girls, but even in California there's pockets of intolerance and ignorance (they're usually pockets of evangelical Christianity too).
You'll probably never regret losing any time because you spent it hiding like I did since you took the plunge so early. Right on!
My best advice to you regarding your dad is be a gay man of value and respect. Don't be a trampy stereotypical gay man. If your dad sees the stereotypical stuff then he'll never accept it. If he sees the gay thing defines you, he'll never accept it. You have to prove that being gay didnt change who you are and it doesnt drive every aspect of your life. The God thing.. I still pray and talk to God and honestly when you were in church you were gay and you still experienced God right? I did.
I still feel God in my life. I still feel like I'm blessed with many things. I always thank God for all I have. I always give God credit. It doesn't have to change. My aunt once told my brother that you dont have to be a Christian to be a good person. In the same respect you dont have to be a straight person to be a good Christian. Just some food for thought.
You don't have to be Christian or religious either. This whole Christian thing is an American phenomenon.
Belief in a god is not a requirement to be a good person -- and Einstein even though it was a pathetic one, as did many of America's founding fathers!!
"Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death." - Albert Einstein
Thanks for your thoughts. However I don't live my life off of what Albert Einstein thought about anything. He was a smart man but he wasn't perfect and he wasn't always right.
I'll take my pathetic American phenomenon and you take your nothing. We'll both be happy I'm sure.
You honestly have no proof of that God and you really don't know anything until you die. Its a game of chance really. Why can't someone happiness stem from the fact tat they're merely alive rather than have to justify everything with a higher being? We'll probably never be able to make sense of everything, but whats wrong with being happy with what you have? It seems silly for it to be necessary for someone to be religious to be happy.
my grandma disowned me for being gay. and my mom told her that she always thought i was gay and my grandma asked if i thought i was gay because my mom told me i was. we laugh about that. and in a sexuality class i took someone suggested that being gay is about nature versus nurture and how someone is raised. i told her that my learning to sew and from my mom had nothing to do with wanting to have sex with guys. the class laughed and agreed. i told my mom and she laughed too.
haha my family was the same way. Now that it's starting to become more apparent about me being gay, nobody says much about it anymore.
My dad used to say "Tsk, thats just gross" when any gay couple or something was on tv. Not so much anymore though. I think I'll have to talk with him about it too. =]
sometimes it just requires a bit of patience. i'm sure i don't even need to tell you this, but they're your family and they love you. it's just uncharted territory for a lot of people and many just aren't sure how to respond. with enough time, they'll come around. just continue to offer them the patience and understanding you hope to one day receive in return and all will turn out ok. best of luck to you, my friend.
Good for you that you not only stand up for yourself but continue to try and bring your dad to understand you. And like you said...who knows? Given time, I'm sure he could come around. ;) Again...thanks for sharing.

You'll eventually tire of arguing with stupid people like your aunt.
You have to eventually resort to ridicule. If you're aunt isn't gay and isn't a Psychologist, what qualifies her as a source of knowledge?
Make sure you get people to FIRST *justify* to you why you should even engage them -- what makes them qualified to hold such an opinion?
That can often shut people down right away when you remind them of how uneducated they are. :)

You cannot argue with people like your brain dead aunt. You can only yes them to death until they are merciful enough to shut up.
