Looks like a territorial fight. Cougars are stalker-hunters and would sit for hours waiting for the right moment, not jump out and ambush. That's if he was hunting of course, and frankly, Lynx arent usually on the menu.

The lynx is a bobcat on steroids and that little cat can tear apart a wolf one-on-one.
