The reason why i fucking hate England, media bastards, one win and your winning the world cup, lose they want ya sacked. Phil Neil is a fucking joke. on a lighter note, cracking upload not watched it for time, thank you so much.
Finally respect to taylor for letting this out , apprently theres unshown footage of Neal saying "this will be the death of you " or words to that effect. But he let it be shown anyway.
Wow ,i was born in 1991 so i only really heard about Englands history. Been searching for this documnetary for ages and its great. the Holland game was intresting to see the angry football fan Taylor at the red card incident turn into the philopher when he calmed down and comes to the realisation his days are numbered. The FA seem clueless from what little we see and the same measures to improve our youth seems to have been talked about then as it is now.
The England squad was actually well short of quality during this era, and Taylor did little wrong (apart from the Norway tactics). He suffered from refereeing mistakes and player error, but that's the nature of management. Every single England manager since Taylor has also been heavily criticised by the press - you either win every single tournament or you're useless. That's the ridiculous conclusion of the press and they never change.
@talbotsunbeamer It's not just the tabloid press though. They go hand in hand with the arrogant-loudmouth section of the fans, and even the England managers before Graham Taylor got it in the neck when things weren't going well, including Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson. It was however taken to a new level of nastiness when Taylor was in charge.
@kisbie Absolutely. They contradict themselves. Sven doesn't succeed? We need an Englishman so get McClaren. He doesn't cut it? We need a tactically astute manager with discipline so Capello comes in. That doesn't work? We should follow the German's lead and put youth in the side. They never look at the truth though, that the players aren't good enough. Instead they'll make out that every manager we've ever had is useless.
@talbotsunbeamer Don’t forget Kevin Keegan got the job after a mini-campaign led by the tabloid-minded (something about to be repeated with Redknapp). McClaren brought Venables in and sacked Beckham for the same reason. Such weaknesses then mean the broadsheet-types get on their case as well!
@talbotsunbeamer Personally, I doubt even Brian Clough could have coped - long-term at least. Especially as Peter Taylor probably wouldn’t have joined him. Look at what happened to Clough whenever Taylor wasn’t there, and multiply that by 1,000. That's the England job in a nutshell.
Cheers Caden Wolves - I had this recorded on tape as a kid but my older brother lent it to a mate who then freakin' taped over it! It pisses me off to this day. Anyhow thanks buddy for the upload - it brought back a load of memories. Good and bad.
Thanks for uploading this gem. I haven't seen it since I first purchased it on vhs when it first come out. Neal was an embarrassment, Taylor out of his depth, you could argue that with a fit shearer things might have been different
thanks for the up load man, saw this as a kid, never realised how unlucky taylor actually was. his whole team underperformed, he was constantly undermined by journalists everyday (neither of which is new for an english manager obviously) and also a very dodgy refereeing decision, with hitting the post twice in the game. the media should be ashamed of themselves, always holding english teams back with their over inflated sense of self worth and national pride
Cheers CadenWolves. Not seen this for 16 years so very good to watch it again. I wonder if Capello will follow suit. I think they have to sack him though. Would you resign when you're on £6M a year?
Thank you so much CadenWolves. I have not seen this documentary for ages and it was just as brilliant as i remembered it to be. Taylor was such a good guy.
hes a top bloke and a great coach but probably a bit too nice to be a international manager - merson sinton dorigo sharpe batty palmer and a fat gazza were all shit but they still could and should of made it to that world cup....dont agree then take a look at some of the glorious players that the rep.ireland qualified with, terry phelan jason mcateer tony cascarino phil babb tony galvin and david kelly
Looking back you can see that it wasnt Taylor's fault really, he was let down by a shocking coaching team; Phil Neal and McMenemy and the evidence is there in this video, and the terrible crop of English players available at the time. I mean how were we to do anything with the likes of Sharpe, Clough, Geoff Thomas, Merson, Salako, Des Walker, Curle etc.
Thanks so much for the upload cadenwolves. Been wanting to watch this again for ages. We were sooo robbed against the Dutch. Feel sorry for Taylor. Bring on South Africa!!
being the England manager is an absolutely thankless job you get it from all sides the press the fans your wife ( mike bassett england manager ) it should be the pinnacle of any English managers career but its not.... everyone in the country thinks they could do a better job , the press slaughter you if you dont pick a player they think should be in the team
Great documentary will never see anything like it again...feel very sorry for Taylor hadn't the greatest english squad to chose from but he was robbed in holland and & very unlucky shearer & other players were missing for large chunks of the group.. :( :(
True. But he simply wasn't cut out for the job. Some of his tactics and selections were bizarre. He's developed a sense of humour about his treatment over the years though and you've got to respect him for that. The whole documentary was pure dark comedy.
Funny, I seem to remember loads of fuss about all the swearing after it was first shown, but compared to some of the stuff on telly now, this is kids stuff. Thanks for posting, great programme.
Just goes to show what nasty weasles our press are! And as for the FA board then well!! Think F.A stands for what the lot of them understand about football
Yep its a grat doc, not seen it since first time around. Taylor did have a limited amount of world class players, no doubt about that, Mclaren was a far worse manager in my opinion.
I remember at the time being happy that england didn't qualify (I'm Irish) BUT in the intervening years I discovered what a decent man Taylor is and the absolute abuse he had to deal with was incredible and that was from his own countryman
world class ? u kidding me? the players thot they were and mcclaren asked to show it - they showed they were worldclass only in their ass-heads thats what they proved
Great documentary. He was/is a good man but couldn't cut it at the highest level. Disagree about Venables' renaissance. Spain battered England and were cheated out of a victory at Euro 96. If they had got the result they deserved that game, Venables would too have been remembered as a flop.
Taylor had a back four how were NEVER good on the ball like say Rio Ferdinand & Cashly Cole these days. The defender kept giving the ball away in dengerous positions.
Pearce, wot the hell was that against san marino?!, talk about letting the side down.
Yep, thanks for uploading. It brought back a lot of memories - most of them bad ones! What strikes me about Taylor is that though his style of football was outclassed at international level (his dug-out discussions often come across as Sunday league) he was a decent person, as shown in the clip where he defends John Barnes against personal insults.
Taylor was never going to make it as England boss, but who could guess that the renaissance of the Venables era was just arond the corner..?
why blame taylor when england were just shit??

Graham Taylor come out of that looking like a strong man.
He seems a good man-manager. A little eccentric maybe, but how many other England managers have had the press in hysterics like that? A funny guy.

I feel sorry for Graham Taylor... but he wasn't right for England. He treated England like a club team.
I mean, the long ball? three defenders?
Carlton Palmer? He's ok (he went to school with my Dad!)
But all the same, we were cheated (again).
Roll on South Africa!
