The eternal memory mentioned in the prayer refers to remembrance by God, rather than the living. It is another way of praying that the soul has entered heaven eternal. It is Christian.

I have been listening to Christian Chants for a year or two now. I keep coming back to this one. I guess it is my favorite. The combination of music and art make for great worship unto God.

I am aware of the various scales in Western music, such as Dorian, Mixolydian, etc. and the various tonalities and sonorities they create.

But I wish I knew what is meant by a Plagal First Tone. It invokes mystery and exaltation as well as austerity.

Can anybody help me with this?

The music is totally intense in its' austere beauty. And the singers are awesome.

Try Googling "Reading Psalmodia" by David Melling. He explains the notation and the theory of Byzantine music.

The orthodox music uses 8 tones that can be compared with 8 sorts of melodies. By the way, Gregorian chant also uses 8 tones because it is the western adaptation of byzantine singing.
