This is an ELEVEN-YEAR OLD playing this music? I studied piano for 20 years and would NEVER be able to pull of such a performance! Not that it negates the recordings by Béroff and P. Serkin and others, but I agree with other commenters that this young lady has a stellar future ahead. Thanks for posting!
What alone already makes her play more mature than so many others' is the sheer fact that she doesn't produce herself, she plays without acting for the gallery (although players especially of this piece could feel invited to dramatize it theatralically). Incredible, I tried to play this piece a few years ago, but never properly managed to handle the quick notes... :'(
valerie how do you manage to conciliate both violin and piano practises? i mean i've played the violin for almost 10 years now and i can't even conciliate violin practise with school let alone violin piano and school :)
I am overwhelmed by Valerie's playing once again. This is a piece that is challenging for even professionals to play well. She certainly played with a lot of character. Genius! My hat goes off you!
Having knowned Olivier Messiaen in my young days, I don't think he would have been happy with the idea of his work being like "movie music". I did the recording of the 24 Regards with French pianist Michel Béroff who was the first winner of the Messiaen competition in Royan. This Regard is the most "post-Debussy". Others are pretty fierce. Valerie really gave me gossebumps by her incredible sonority control and understanding of the universe of Messiaen. What finger, what a brain, what a heart!
@klingsor93 Hi, I noticed your comment about the Beroff recording, which occupies such a special place for Messiaen cognoscenti- no one has matched his insight despite being such a young man at the time. I bought the score and learnt 1-4 & 7.
This performance was played delicately and beautifully Valerie. It does sound like a movie theme piece, and in the future I hope that Valerie will play this piece for a movie.. ;)
All the best to you and your family.
Congratulations for turning 11! Sorry if I said this too late, I just realized that.
This is part 11 of a 20 part work titled: Vingt Regards sur lEnfant-Jésus, a collection of pieces for solo piano. The French title translates Twenty gazes/contemplations on the infant Jesus. It is considered to be one of the greatest piano works of the twentieth century, and the summit of Messiaens keyboard writing.
thats it, I love this piece!!!

@hamiltonrrw No, this is Messiaen´s highly mystical interpretation of biblical dogma.

Young girl playing Messiaen, just like a Bach, Chopin and Debussy - it's fantastic!

I could never appreciate this kind of music, until I heard you play your interpretation.
Thanks Valerie!

This is mature work, even for an 11 year old. Bless you, valerie.

I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were used in some movies in the past.
Please see my other comment below (above?).

Not sure if this was ever used in a movie.
