I made a destroyer based on this video and I'm currently lvl 55 at floor 37 of the shadow vault tearing through lvl 68 monsters! To those who have asked yes devestate is the only skill you need with this build and yes it still takes less mana to click the skill rather than hold it down. To rebind keys you can use Torchkit like the OP said or you can manually edit the settings.txt in the appdata folder.
For more info google "torchlight basic guide to key remapping"
Devastate in general is overpowered IMO. Giving your pet the heal all spell + devastate + eyeball let me beat the game far before I probably should have. Nothing else I've tried compares.
OTOH, now I rely on it in the shadow mine when everything takes 90s or more to kill.... LOL
Just recently bought Torchlight because it was $5 on steam. After playing it a few times and seeing this video, I've been in the process of copying your build. Now that I've reached level 25 today... holy shit this build is over powered. I'm playing on very hard just as you are and must say that once you hit level 25 you will absolutely own everything in your path. Admittedly though, the early levels are pretty tough.
@Flare1564 Oh but I did make a small modification. Instead of putting points into Pet Mastery I put them into Thorns. I'll probably make a video when I get decently leveled. Thanks for the sharing! Loving it! :)
@DarkBlaze74 goto %appdata%\Runic Games\Torchlight and you'll see a Settings.txt in which you can edit your keys binding. And keep in mind that the keys are written in ASCII code.
@fatNstealthy And what is your point? I think this is a well developed game considering it was made in a 10 month time frame and with minimal funding. D3 has made little to no progress and honestly I will play TL and TL2 before D3. Blizzard has lost my respect for them. So fuck D3 and kudos to Runic Games for a great game.
@fatNstealthy A bold smith with an irish accent, jungle levels featururing pygmee enemies with shamans ressurecting them and casting fire spells combined with lightning casting spirits and large three type monsters - Socketed items with gems that can be transmuted to their next grade - Magical, set and unique items, 'random' unique and superunique monsters and a, let's be honest, identical soundtrack (And thats just a FEW examples). I really don't see ANY similarities with Diablo... :p
@xway I do not know does it work with current version of Torchlight as I haven't played the game in months, but on previous versions you could click repeatably Devastate instead of holding the mouse button down. Using the skill this way alongside with 5 levels in Advanced Spellcasting for some mana regen, Devastate doesn't drain your mana pool basically at all. You also attack faster this way.
@Tharn1979 It works about the same i would imagine, it seems the mana does drain but not particularly as fast as the stated design is but it does a bit spam clicking. Not that it matters, at high levels your mana pool is quite high, and mana potions are not exactly rare. I just replayed my destroyer, using devastate as a primary skill and even around 40 i noticed hardly any problem flying around using nothing but devastate with no mana regen at all.
hey man my destroyer build, which i made up, includes the two passive weapon damage skills, devestate, and thats all i got so far. did you do offensive spell, the stun chains and aura as well?
I have just started this game myself and been reading about the different "stages" and I noticed your on level 70 of the fortress when i read in an article not saying its correct but the max was 30. im guessing this isnt the first time ur character has been through the level
Once you beat the game for the first time, a new dungeon opens on the village graveyard, called Shadow Vault. It has randomly generated infinite levels where monsters get increasingly more difficult each level. This dude has been leveled up mostly there.
Christ, that's no Destroyer. That's a battering ram. :O
Just started playing 3 days ago, lvl 40-ish Destroyer atm, somewhat of a baby version of your guy here. DW, MWE, Entropy, Spectral Echo, Devastate are all about what I have. Some points in Treasure Mastery as I'm hoping to score some nice heirlooms for my second char. Awesome vid! :D
Strength is more efficient for damage with Destroyers than magic.
I'd suggest you develop 3 str and 2 def each level up. If you're aiming for a lvl 100 character, focus on defense after exp level 50 or so, it becomes essential on later levels of Shadow Vault (1 str and 4 def each level up for instance).
Btw, did you respec your character? Because I find doing a purely passive build for Destroyers early on kinda suicidal. Any tips for surviving on the early pre-devastate levels on Very Hard?
Yes, Respec was the only mod I used with this guy. This build wasn't much know at the time, so some "experiments" were necessary.
I used Slash attack until I got Devastate, but guess there could be more effective temporary builds to be used with respecing. This 500 char limit on YouTube is a killer though, maybe you should check the official Torchlight forums? There are few really good Destroyer guides there, with much more in-depth analysis than I can provide through these YouTube comments.
Enchanting adds more magical properties to an item. Enchanted weapon could get more damage from enchanting for instance.
Each enchant you do increases the disenchant chance of the item. If your item gets disenchanted, it loses all it's extra properties and becomes a mundane item.
So, you need to find a balance between having as much different enchanted properties in your equipment and the risk of enchanting the item further, with the possible cost of losing the item completely.
@llamacookiematt adds prefix subfix and extra magic properties to existing item. the only con is that it has a chance to fail, mean you lose some of your stats, maybe all.
Yes, I use skill duration mod with my SE Destroyer but that is a completely different character than this. Besides, I'd consider it a gameplay improvement than a cheat. As you can see from this video with default skill durations, it doesn't slow you much down if you constantly recast skills while in battle, it's just a nuisance from poor game design. In no way it makes the character more powerful or the character build more potent than with default durations
I put careful consideration when developing this mod.
Only skills which have increased duration are the ones you can recast immediately after the effect wears down. To balance the mana consumption, I multiplied the mana cost of these skills accordingly.
Skills which have higher cooldown than duration are all uneffected, so skills like Dervish and Elemental Overload stay in balance
Overall it's a very balanced mod, which only takes away the unnecessary nuisance to constantly recast your skills
Besides, I never stated I was playing the game completely purist style and when I used a "major" mod (skill durations with SE Destroyer), I clearly stated in video description.
Accusing someone of cheating by the use of balanced mods is just noobish. There's a canyon between cheating and modding.
Mods are made to improve gameplay and maybe add some advanced features in the game, not to take the challenge away from the game.
If you want to play the game in oldschool way, it's fine by me, as it should be fine by you if someone wants to change a thing or two in the gameplay mechanics.
I'm an experienced game mod developer, so I think I know what I'm speaking about here.
Besides, you're missing the point of these videos. They're here to demonstrate the potent of different character builds, and these few gameplay improving mods I've used, do not make the builds any less potent or efficient.
You can build exactly as effective character as these ones without using a single mod with your game. Every skill is as effective and useful as without mods or with them.
im use almost same build and im to use some mods... stacksize, bridge map, better quest reward, better sale prinze,... etc. game its little borng after 40h+ : L With haste all chracter can run to 10000 floor in dungeon...
Wicked tune... haha... makes ur killing spree fuuuuuuun =).
My destroyer's at Level 100 w/ stats: 380/134/192/207, but it seems it maxes out at Level 100 XP and 55 Fame. I have v1.0 of the game - does the game cap at 100/55 XP/Fame???
I'll check out the forums. Maybe they'll release a v1.3 or 2.0 that'll further the XP level. Otherwise I'll be hacking my way through the infinite Shadow Vault levels... getting a bit tedious now.
guys, destroyers are warriors, u need defense, strength and hp, nothing more, why u wana fight with ranged wep, all ure talents are for melee combat, at least all u're important ones, my destroyer has 179/28/22/110 (str/dex/mag/def), my crits are over 9k, i finished the last boss in under 1 min, without any pot, make u're chat as it was intended to be
@pannkakoregott yes, i finised with my destroyer on easy, now i started on very hard with all classes, it is harder, but i just need to pay more attention, that's all, i will not make teh mistakes i made on my first char, i will chose only what is important
well its ont a hard game for people that are used to rpgs type and know exactly to go for the right skills, i mean if you have a character with no Martial Weapons Expertise and Critical Strikes then its not a good character.
My destroyer is level 32 and till know i have put my points into devas.shadow arm. and armor exp. dunno where to put the rest.. put i will look later...
my question if i should spent points for dex because of the armour requierments... what would you say???
thx
p.s: can you make a vid where i can see all your stuff you are wearing?
Do not waste your points to dex, it doesn't benefit you any way other than allows you to wear certain equipment.
You're better of for the time being just wearing different equipment.
If you continue to play further, you'll find plenty of equipment with gives you enchantments giving you +20 to +30 to dex, few of these is plenty for any equipment dex requirements you'll have.
It's impossible to show the equipment of the character in the video as I retired the character immediately after the vid
Magic does not increase your mana at all, but gives a bonus to elemental damage you do. Logic behind increasing it was that enchanted items usually gives you more elemental damage than physical, thus larger portion of your total damage is elemental. "In paper" the damage increase from magic even seems to be higher than from strength, but this has been proven wrong by testing done by the game community. Something doesn't just add up when the final damage is calculated.
Besides, those last 5 stats points I just wasted away anyway. Mostly I increased only strength and defense during my level ups and used up only about 30 to 40 points to magic in total. Defense especially gets really important in later levels of Shadow Vault, as it increases both you melee and elemental damage resistance.
I retired my character immediately after hitting level 100, so I just pressed the stats points pretty randomly at my level up and without giving much thought.
Guess I should have used them more according to my real average stat distribution, as I'm so often asked about why I used 2 points to magic.
I tried to make Magic based damage to work with my later Vanquisher build, but it seems that it's just better to increase either strength or dexterity for damage, depending on the weapon types you use. They both gives bonuses to your elemental damage as well, so the existence of magic stat in the game at all is pretty peculiar.
As the description of the video says (and the whole purpose of this video is), it's the spell Haste in work here. Everything is real time, as you can see from the spell cooldown counters as well.
You can see the normal walking speed of my character in the beginning of video.
do you think diablo 3 will have about the same system requirements as torchlight? I hope so. They both look good and torchlight runs well on my pc so it makes me more excited for d3 lol
Diablo 3 system requirements will be at least 3 times the amount that torchlght needs to run on max, and that may not even be enough to run d3 on max.
Torchlight has massively low requirements, which is one of its great boons.
blizzard has always been good at bringing maximum out of the games. WoW is probably their worst "tuned" game spec wise since it's badly coded at some points (dalaran for example) and this they have admitted themselfs. Although I think both starcraft2 and d3 are going to be farely light even thought they have great graphic and so on.
Yea, I expect Blizzard to make a game that looks amazing but also plays (and still looks good) on a lower end system. They never release anything that isn't top quality so I don't see why we should expect anything less. :)
I can run this game on Max settings.. and my computer is a piece of shit.. I hope they dont make D3 So insanely graphical.. Torchlights graphics are way more than enough graphics than i could ever want in this type of game..
yeah, the graphics are pretty good, kinda has the WoW graphics tho, but i think torchlight graphics are better then WoW has :D. but thats just me right :3?
yea, me too. My computer massively lagged when I played CoD: MW2, but I can play Torchlight on maximum settings with no lag, so this is an awesome game!
@westeh lol@questioning who I am on youtube. You're so clever.
He wasn't even complaining, just stating that his computer couldn't run d3. But since I've already made you mad I get to mess with you instead of commenting and leaving it. "I'm not mad" is what I expect in return. kgo.
As you can see at the end of the video when I browse trough all my skill tabs, I've level 5 in Advanced Spellcasting. The level requirements decrease for scrolls it provides is useless, but the mana regen effect is very effective. I was planning to level up it even higher, but found out that level 5 provided so fast regen than I couldn't even use mana faster than it regenerated.
He is clickspamming Devastate. The skill is bugged so if you just click it once it only uses something like 5 mana verses when you hold it down, which uses 35 per second. He also has some points in Advanced Spellcasting as he says, but I have none and have the exact same experience. And even if it did get low, pots drop much faster than anyone could ever use them :)
He mentioned why, he used a mod called Torchkit. You can download it from various gaming sites, you can google it and probably find it. I'm much to lazy to link the site.
"as they are nerfing Alchemist's Ember Lance and Ember Lightning in the upcoming patch. In so far, I've found Devastate + Haste combo with Destroyer far superior and overpowered character build"
It's from the OST of the movie "Live Aquatic with Steve Zissou", from the Ping Island / Lightning Strike Rescue Operation -scene, one of my all time favorite movies with interesting soundtrack.
Haste VI scroll with level 10 Defensive Spell Mastery. It gives me +12% attack speed and +70% walk speed. It's the increase in walk speed which makes Devastate really powerful when combined with it.
I use Haste VI and Dervish VI spells combined with Devastate, powered up by level 10 Defensive Spell Mastery skill for the Haste spell, and level 10 Offensive Spell Mastery skill for the Dervish spell.
Haste makes your Devastate leaps faster and they take you much further, so you can handle mobs much easier. Dervish VI gives +60% increased attack & casting speed for 20 seconds, so it's excellent buff against champions or really large mobs.
Increasing defense become ever so necessary on later levels as monsters start to do pretty insane damage. You can always get higher damage with enchanted weapons, but for defense there ain't no substitute. Besides lowering the incoming physical damage, it also increases your resistances so it has double benefits. Without high defense, monsters could kill you instantly with one hit especially with criticals. There's a few times I get hit for almost 2k damage in the vid, and those are without crits
how did u set bindings? how u have "2" as "W" and "3" as "e" and so on? i have a level 30 alchemist and just beat the first big guy, the one dude Alric sacrificed himself for, i forget his name haha, and the fight would have been so much easier with bindings like urs... please reply
hey tharn1979 awsome vid, makes me wanna make a devestate destroyer now lol. was just wondering wat your stat distribution, just read ur comment about needing def so i might need to change mine a bit
In general, I think I distributed my points with around +1 to 2 to str, +1 to magic and rest for defense with every level up.
There were around 20 experience levels or so though during exp levels 70 to 80 or so, when I didn't develop nothing but defense, as monsters in the Shadow Vault started to make pretty intense damage.
I found it was much easier to get extra defense and resistances from stat point distribution than from items.
Most of current PC games use this kind of key configuration, especially FPS-games. I've played thousands of hours of FPS-games in the years, so this key configuration is much more natural to me than buttons 1 to 0.
Also, you never need to rise your hand from the keyboard to press different buttons, so you don't get mistypes either.
I think I couldn't have even played my Destroyer that effectively without changing the key configuration
No, I move with mouse but as you can see from the video, I've 6 skills or spells that I use continuously + health potions on top of that.
That's 7 different keys required, and as most of us do not have that many fingers, you would be going from left to right with your keyboard. That's a lot of hand moving and although I can touch type and have been using keyboards since I was 5 years old, I still found myself typing the wrong keys every now and then when I used the default 1 to 0 key settings
Ah, I see. I had only played a little bit of the game and didn't realize you would have so many active skills. so far, it just seemed like diablo 2 to me.
I made a destroyer based on this video and I'm currently lvl 55 at floor 37 of the shadow vault tearing through lvl 68 monsters! To those who have asked yes devestate is the only skill you need with this build and yes it still takes less mana to click the skill rather than hold it down. Tharn1979 2 years ago
As with enchanting, I haven't used any mods with this one.
The enchanting video is made with RELEASE VERSION OF THE GAME!
It's clearly stated in the video description, I've commented about it several times and couldn't get it more clearer.
Enchanting didn't show your disenchant chance in release version of the game although it had a static 6% disenchant chance per enchant.
This was in full effect during the video and enchant prices, changes and effects were all unmodded.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Besides, I never stated I was playing the game completely purist style and when I used a "major" mod (skill durations with SE Destroyer), I clearly stated in video description.
Accusing someone of cheating by the use of balanced mods is just noobish. There's a canyon between cheating and modding.
Mods are made to improve gameplay and maybe add some advanced features in the game, not to take the challenge away from the game.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
If you want to play the game in oldschool way, it's fine by me, as it should be fine by you if someone wants to change a thing or two in the gameplay mechanics.
I'm an experienced game mod developer, so I think I know what I'm speaking about here.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Besides, you're missing the point of these videos. They're here to demonstrate the potent of different character builds, and these few gameplay improving mods I've used, do not make the builds any less potent or efficient.
You can build exactly as effective character as these ones without using a single mod with your game. Every skill is as effective and useful as without mods or with them.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
im use almost same build and im to use some mods... stacksize, bridge map, better quest reward, better sale prinze,... etc. game its little borng after 40h+ : L With haste all chracter can run to 10000 floor in dungeon...

Wicked tune... haha... makes ur killing spree fuuuuuuun =).
My destroyer's at Level 100 w/ stats: 380/134/192/207, but it seems it maxes out at Level 100 XP and 55 Fame. I have v1.0 of the game - does the game cap at 100/55 XP/Fame???
kemmeex 2 years ago
Yes, 100/55 is the maximum level.
There are mods available which increases the maximum exp and fame levels at Torchlight forums, but I haven't tried them yet.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Thanks. Appreciated.
I'll check out the forums. Maybe they'll release a v1.3 or 2.0 that'll further the XP level. Otherwise I'll be hacking my way through the infinite Shadow Vault levels... getting a bit tedious now.

btw tharn, nice crits, nice way to kill :D
RaresCraciunas 2 years ago
guys, destroyers are warriors, u need defense, strength and hp, nothing more, why u wana fight with ranged wep, all ure talents are for melee combat, at least all u're important ones, my destroyer has 179/28/22/110 (str/dex/mag/def), my crits are over 9k, i finished the last boss in under 1 min, without any pot, make u're chat as it was intended to be
RaresCraciunas 2 years ago
lol im sure u play on easy.
pannkakoregott 2 years ago
@pannkakoregott yes, i finised with my destroyer on easy, now i started on very hard with all classes, it is harder, but i just need to pay more attention, that's all, i will not make teh mistakes i made on my first char, i will chose only what is important
RaresCraciunas 2 years ago
well its ont a hard game for people that are used to rpgs type and know exactly to go for the right skills, i mean if you have a character with no Martial Weapons Expertise and Critical Strikes then its not a good character.
clyrus 2 years ago
hi nice vid!!!
HDMGDH 2 years ago
Do not waste your points to dex, it doesn't benefit you any way other than allows you to wear certain equipment.
You're better of for the time being just wearing different equipment.
If you continue to play further, you'll find plenty of equipment with gives you enchantments giving you +20 to +30 to dex, few of these is plenty for any equipment dex requirements you'll have.
It's impossible to show the equipment of the character in the video as I retired the character immediately after the vid
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Read through all the comments but didnt see why you are putting points into magic...
I would assume its for a larger mana pool for the many spells you are using, but wouldn't more strength and the occasional mana pot be better?
EvilGopher01 2 years ago
Magic does not increase your mana at all, but gives a bonus to elemental damage you do. Logic behind increasing it was that enchanted items usually gives you more elemental damage than physical, thus larger portion of your total damage is elemental. "In paper" the damage increase from magic even seems to be higher than from strength, but this has been proven wrong by testing done by the game community. Something doesn't just add up when the final damage is calculated.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Besides, those last 5 stats points I just wasted away anyway. Mostly I increased only strength and defense during my level ups and used up only about 30 to 40 points to magic in total. Defense especially gets really important in later levels of Shadow Vault, as it increases both you melee and elemental damage resistance.
I retired my character immediately after hitting level 100, so I just pressed the stats points pretty randomly at my level up and without giving much thought.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Guess I should have used them more according to my real average stat distribution, as I'm so often asked about why I used 2 points to magic.
I tried to make Magic based damage to work with my later Vanquisher build, but it seems that it's just better to increase either strength or dexterity for damage, depending on the weapon types you use. They both gives bonuses to your elemental damage as well, so the existence of magic stat in the game at all is pretty peculiar.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
@EvilGopher01 he rarely uses his weapons if u watch. so str is basicly a waste of time for him

haste or speeded up?
hidjedewitje 2 years ago
As the description of the video says (and the whole purpose of this video is), it's the spell Haste in work here. Everything is real time, as you can see from the spell cooldown counters as well.
You can see the normal walking speed of my character in the beginning of video.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
okey..
i see that speed is awesome
cause you used frost shield so i didnt see if u used hastee

do you think diablo 3 will have about the same system requirements as torchlight? I hope so. They both look good and torchlight runs well on my pc so it makes me more excited for d3 lol
btw nice character. you're rockin
scjason420 2 years ago
Diablo 3 system requirements will be at least 3 times the amount that torchlght needs to run on max, and that may not even be enough to run d3 on max.
Torchlight has massively low requirements, which is one of its great boons.
Slanderbot 2 years ago 11
What makes you think that?
D2 didn't take much and they made WoW run without a monster rig.
scjason420 2 years ago
blizzard has always been good at bringing maximum out of the games. WoW is probably their worst "tuned" game spec wise since it's badly coded at some points (dalaran for example) and this they have admitted themselfs. Although I think both starcraft2 and d3 are going to be farely light even thought they have great graphic and so on.
bronksan 2 years ago 2
Yea, I expect Blizzard to make a game that looks amazing but also plays (and still looks good) on a lower end system. They never release anything that isn't top quality so I don't see why we should expect anything less. :)
scjason420 2 years ago 2
I can run this game on Max settings.. and my computer is a piece of shit.. I hope they dont make D3 So insanely graphical.. Torchlights graphics are way more than enough graphics than i could ever want in this type of game..
inpachi123 2 years ago 12
@inpachi123
yeah, the graphics are pretty good, kinda has the WoW graphics tho, but i think torchlight graphics are better then WoW has :D. but thats just me right :3?
apedomann21 2 years ago 3
yea, me too. My computer massively lagged when I played CoD: MW2, but I can play Torchlight on maximum settings with no lag, so this is an awesome game!

@inpachi123 How about you just get a new machine ? ... you could build a machine for under $700 that would run it fine....

@westeh lol@questioning who I am on youtube. You're so clever.
He wasn't even complaining, just stating that his computer couldn't run d3. But since I've already made you mad I get to mess with you instead of commenting and leaving it. "I'm not mad" is what I expect in return. kgo.

@inpachi123 diablo 3 will be much heavier graphically, but if you run it at low you could probably still get 30 fps

Yeah true that mad song
how did you chage your hot keys from 1,2,3,4 to w,e,r etc???????
StevemeisterV2B 2 years ago
This has been answered several times in the comments, even to the question that YOU asked earlier.
One word: TorchKit.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Yeah, im curious about how you keep your mana recharged too
flamingdragon22 2 years ago
how is your mana staying full during all of this?
Solarwire 2 years ago
As you can see at the end of the video when I browse trough all my skill tabs, I've level 5 in Advanced Spellcasting. The level requirements decrease for scrolls it provides is useless, but the mana regen effect is very effective. I was planning to level up it even higher, but found out that level 5 provided so fast regen than I couldn't even use mana faster than it regenerated.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
He is clickspamming Devastate. The skill is bugged so if you just click it once it only uses something like 5 mana verses when you hold it down, which uses 35 per second. He also has some points in Advanced Spellcasting as he says, but I have none and have the exact same experience. And even if it did get low, pots drop much faster than anyone could ever use them :)
kronchev 2 years ago
HOW did you get your skills down to the bottom so that they are w,e,r instead of 1,2,3,4???? please love to find out
othert than that great video and sick game :)
5/5
StevemeisterV2B 2 years ago 2
He mentioned why, he used a mod called Torchkit. You can download it from various gaming sites, you can google it and probably find it. I'm much to lazy to link the site.

"as they are nerfing Alchemist's Ember Lance and Ember Lightning in the upcoming patch. In so far, I've found Devastate + Haste combo with Destroyer far superior and overpowered character build"
I thought exactly the same when I heard of it.
taikanatur 2 years ago
What music is that? It sounds so familiar...
Enigmers 2 years ago
Composed by Matt Uelmen. The same composer for Diablo II. Infact the game is made by co-designers for Diablo
DVengence1 2 years ago
I know he did the music in Torchlight; I'm wondering what the tune is in this particular video.
Matt Uelmen is a hell of a guy, though, his music makes the atmosphere in Torchlight that much more awesome.
Enigmers 2 years ago
It's from the OST of the movie "Live Aquatic with Steve Zissou", from the Ping Island / Lightning Strike Rescue Operation -scene, one of my all time favorite movies with interesting soundtrack.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Why do you distribute points to magic?
azza3 2 years ago
So dex is truly a useless stat for the general masses of destroyer then. You get all the points you needed off armor and weapons then?
DVengence1 2 years ago
nice vid. what level haste is that?
sepulturia 2 years ago
Haste VI scroll with level 10 Defensive Spell Mastery. It gives me +12% attack speed and +70% walk speed. It's the increase in walk speed which makes Devastate really powerful when combined with it.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Hey man, what do you mean with: "Haste (+Dervish)"
Jonyparkour 2 years ago
I use Haste VI and Dervish VI spells combined with Devastate, powered up by level 10 Defensive Spell Mastery skill for the Haste spell, and level 10 Offensive Spell Mastery skill for the Dervish spell.
Haste makes your Devastate leaps faster and they take you much further, so you can handle mobs much easier. Dervish VI gives +60% increased attack & casting speed for 20 seconds, so it's excellent buff against champions or really large mobs.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Wow, a stat line-up of 218/110/103/389 is interesting. Why so much defense? Are those level 110 mobs even hurting you? How much do they hit for?
GodOfReality 2 years ago
Increasing defense become ever so necessary on later levels as monsters start to do pretty insane damage. You can always get higher damage with enchanted weapons, but for defense there ain't no substitute. Besides lowering the incoming physical damage, it also increases your resistances so it has double benefits. Without high defense, monsters could kill you instantly with one hit especially with criticals. There's a few times I get hit for almost 2k damage in the vid, and those are without crits
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Interesting. I guess to make the best char for Torchlight nothing other than defense is needed asides from stats for item requirements.
Looks like one more thing I'll have to change with my mod, haha.
GodOfReality 2 years ago
how did u set bindings? how u have "2" as "W" and "3" as "e" and so on? i have a level 30 alchemist and just beat the first big guy, the one dude Alric sacrificed himself for, i forget his name haha, and the fight would have been so much easier with bindings like urs... please reply
animebugfrreak 2 years ago
I used a GUI tool called TorchKit, you can find it with Google.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
hey tharn1979 awsome vid, makes me wanna make a devestate destroyer now lol. was just wondering wat your stat distribution, just read ur comment about needing def so i might need to change mine a bit
Faynt09 2 years ago
In general, I think I distributed my points with around +1 to 2 to str, +1 to magic and rest for defense with every level up.
There were around 20 experience levels or so though during exp levels 70 to 80 or so, when I didn't develop nothing but defense, as monsters in the Shadow Vault started to make pretty intense damage.
I found it was much easier to get extra defense and resistances from stat point distribution than from items.
Tharn1979 2 years ago
@animebugfrreak why would it be so much easier if the buttons were down one row? lol
scjason420 2 years ago
I actually have my buttons in 3 rows:
Q W E R
A S D F
Z X
Most of current PC games use this kind of key configuration, especially FPS-games. I've played thousands of hours of FPS-games in the years, so this key configuration is much more natural to me than buttons 1 to 0.
Also, you never need to rise your hand from the keyboard to press different buttons, so you don't get mistypes either.
I think I couldn't have even played my Destroyer that effectively without changing the key configuration
Tharn1979 2 years ago
it doesn't mostly just use ~ - 4 like diablo 2? do you move with the keyboard?
scjason420 2 years ago
No, I move with mouse but as you can see from the video, I've 6 skills or spells that I use continuously + health potions on top of that.
That's 7 different keys required, and as most of us do not have that many fingers, you would be going from left to right with your keyboard. That's a lot of hand moving and although I can touch type and have been using keyboards since I was 5 years old, I still found myself typing the wrong keys every now and then when I used the default 1 to 0 key settings
Tharn1979 2 years ago
Ah, I see. I had only played a little bit of the game and didn't realize you would have so many active skills. so far, it just seemed like diablo 2 to me.
I get ya now though. :)
