  • No shortcuts ;(

  • 0:50 LOL I laugh at that part cuz of how obvious that is and how he, himself is kinda stating how obvious it is :P

  • Gonna be honest, I like his Sonor drums more than his new DW kit

  • Hey man! What's the name of the song at 1:50?

  • @mrpeepeee12

Serpents Rise - Late Night Sci-Fi

  • @odne1995 that's Derek's other band, Traumedy

  • @mrpeepeee12 odne1995 said the correct song name, but it's not Serpents Rise. It's his other band, Traumedy

  • I think I've heard the wisests councils of my life at the shortest time

  • this is a real musician...smart, humble, and takes time to learn more then one style and being able to apply it.

  • 1:09 "You're searching for it, but u don't know what you're doing." XD

  • <3 Traumedy!!!! Their music is so addictive!!!!

  • never heard of this guy until just now, and I like him.

  • 1:22 - 1:50 That is so true, I know exactly what he means. This gives me hope I'll get there someday

  • versatility for other musicians you said it derek !

  • METAL is the finest music cause it follows nothing. No harmony, no rythms, no specific lyrics..nothing! You can find any kind of music in it and it's a prepared audio-ground for any experiment. It's the sound of a completely free part of our soul.

  • @musakaOverlord That's an extremely gray area tbh.

  • 1:50 a little bit like i, monarch :D

  • 2:10 to 2:48 is the wisest thing I have ever heard any musician say.

  • somebody know the name of the song?

  • 10 years? oh bummer x_x

  • yep ive been drumming for over 15 years... its taken me over 3 years to get control over my left foot. but i was deployed fo about 5 months during that time. if you practice every day and practice correctly you will get it faster...

  • those weird fusiony songs. who are they by?

  • wow......thats what i call multi tasking...

  • @surdrumsa1ot Yeah...he must be a woman.

  • @Drumkid945 haha

  • His impression of the kid who looks up different techniques and gives up after 3-4 tries is spot on. The reason there are so many bad musicians is that they spend more time trying to get good fast then get good in time.

  • The best excuse for a huge cymbal setup always is, "I try to develop equal skills with both my hands" - which Derek Roddy actually does. He made his drum set up to play righthanded as well as lefthanded on it. That's why he has got the 8"-12"-10" Tom setup in front of him.

And it's for various sounds as well, not to forget about this aspect!

  • this video shows his wide range of styles high drumming ability

  • w000 i have axis X's aswell :D

  • @BrutalizeURf4ce More sounds.

  • ЕБАШИЛОВО!!!!!111111

  • Apart from being a virtuoso, this guy is WISE!...

  • Why do modern drummers feel they need 500+ cymbals? It is called 'drumming' for a reason.

  • @BrutalizeURf4ce why wouldnt you want alot of cymbals its more sound you can bring alot more into it, you need different embellishments, when ever you have somebody like buddy rich who just beats on drums it really gets annoying after about 2 minutes

  • @Drummeraddict93

You just said Buddy Rich is annoying because he doesn't use enough cymbals. Just want to make sure you realize that.

  • Comment removed

  • @Drummeraddict93 your an idiot. if you actually realized the things he was doing your jaw would drop. buddy rich is doing a hell of a lot more than just "beating on drums" hes one of the greatest players to ever live

  • @dridethepresident Buddy isn't doing anything, he's dead.

  • @yourgodsname verry funny

  • @yourgodsname Buddys always alive and always will be da best.

  • @OSDrummer93 Denial, it's not just a river in Egypt.

  • Comment removed

  • @BrutalizeURf4ce your an idiot man.

  • @Drummeraddict93 Danny Carey uses his drums like no other, Buddy Rich excluded, and I'd love to see you get anywhere close to his sound/skill.

  • He makes Mike Portnoy look like a 10 year old boy behind the drumkit.

  • @rustyknight0303 so true...

  • Comment removed

  • I'M A METAL HEAD DRUMMER BUT I ALWAYS LISTEN TO AND PRACTICE DIFFERENT RHYTHMS,ESPECIALLY THE BOOK,"WEST AFRICAN RHYTHMS FOR DRUMSET"

    GREAT BOOK.

  • @eljessieboy Was the extreme caps lock necessary for that?

  • Man his drums sound so dark and dry lol really nice.

  • Haha Flo from Cryptopsy played at Modern Drummer. Everyone shit themselves.

  • couldn't have said it better!

  • 2:32 that goes for you fuckin jazzerss!!!!!!

    no im just kidding

  • 2:32

  • I get to see this guy live in like 1 month at the Memphis drum shop.

  • I didn´t know Cliff Burton played the drums...

  • @HarvesterOfBuckets ?????

what do you mean? that he looks like burton????

  • @watchyourst3p Yes

  • He's pretty good .. but he lacks Gavin Harrison's flawlessness.

  • This guy is THE shit! Incredible human being and drummer.

  • Which is the China he hits at 2:52 ? it sounds aoierjgtalkdhfigkdfhg :)

  • Which is the shina he hits at 2:52 ? it sounds aoierjgtalkdhfigkdfhg :)

  • wow, i always knew that derek is a very very talented musician, but he is also a very smart guy.

    and a cool guy.

  • Going to my favourites. Don't want to loose such a prophet.

  • Respect man!!

  • good lad! i'm a jazz drummer, and i'm away to buy a nile tshirt.

  • Danny Carey and Derek are by FARRRRRRR the best drummers out there!

  • this guy is such a beast.. speed, agility, accuracy, precision, versatility, coordination... hell yes.

  • I guess my next 10 years are booked...

  • "the same goes for the jazzers, same thing, do yourself a favor, go buy a Nile t-shirt, and go see Nile." Great advice for ANYONE!!!

  • @macksf98 Lol I saw your comment on the video of Chris Adler and I thought you were just some schmuck who can't appreciate good drumming. Now I know for damn sure you're just a troll.

    TROLLLLLL in the dungeon!!!!

  • hes awesome .

  • I read somewhere that this guy auditioned for Dream Theater.. well that'd be sick.

  • he's totally right. i was one of those guys searching whole youtube for techniques to gain double bass speed. but it's a matter of hard, very hard work. instead of search youtube vids i practice two to three hours a day. even then it takes a long time before you can play fast. So if you wanna get fast practice your ass off!

  • EASILY the ONLY metal guy that can be compared to guys like Benny Greb and Gavin Harrison..

  • Love Roddy, hate his bass drums.

  • what is the name of the songs he play in this video?

  • couldnt be more right with the 10years advice. it really does take along time to be good at something, something which this instant gratification society doesnt understand or appreciate

  • his dynamics are soooo fuckin solid.

  • Derek Roddy can divide by zero.

  • Derek is such a genuine guy. I love that he mentions GK and encourages people who are deep into other genres of music to check out bands like Nile. He recognizes true talent in every genre.

  • @Blacklorigine yeh so true im a metal drummer but i do jazz and indie stuff as well. how many jazz or reggae drummers try metal

  • @Blacklorigine Musicians lmao

  • @Blacklorigine Truer words = "metal musicians need more versatility." /discussion

  • @hansrobosacs Why metal musicians should be the only ones to play differents kind of music?

  • @Blacklorigine uh.... wat?

  • i can play 10x faster than roddy using a computer drum..

  • Is it just me or does his set-up look superduper fucking comfortable?

  • I've met him, he lives in the city where i live

  • wtf..four pedal....with shit ashh..

  • @caddict69 Actually 5. The double bass pedal for the right bass drum, the pedal for the left bass drum plus the 2 hi-hat pedals.

  • @caddict69 Actually, 6. The 2 hi-hat pedals, the 2x bass pedal for the right bass drum, the pedal for the left bass drum plus a pedal that hits something else at the left of the drum kit. Look closely.

  • rapist.

  • what the fuck? the sound at the beginning is the fruity-loops open sound xD

    derek rules by the way!

  • 1:48 = sexy groove

  • So true! Most older players think Metal drumming is slamming two and four to 'Living After Midnight'. It's evolved folks and the techique alot of these modern metal players have is nothing short of amazing!

  • OMG that snare sounds so good!

  • Thumbs up if those cymbals also looked black to you at 0:07

  • can enyone tell what are these songs hes playing?

  • They are probably his own songs. Just stuff he came up with on Fruityloops or whatever.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC Nah, it's one of the bands he plays in, Traumedy.

  • holy shiiiiiit i wanna fuck those cymbals!

  • How tall is roddy? im 6, 2 and ive got my bass drums like 2 feet apart. is that bad??

  • would love to see him take Mike's place in dream theater!

  • @eennymo

    yeah right...

  • sometimes you think he doesnt know what to do...

  • 2:09 what happens there ? :S

  • @Kotowboy He's human, he made a tiny mistake, WHO CARES?

    Not me, do you?

  • @Philzwhodrumz & Kotowboy ... I don't think its a mistake at all, the clip was cut short & was probably just a transition into a different off timing beat. Just a guess because I haven't seen the whole original video.

  • ROGUE KOVU, It sounds different because its 2 different sized kicks, watch it again, look closely. one looks like a 24 and the other a 22

  • Ohhhhh the terrible, terrible things I would do for that kit.

  • Great drummer but Stuck up his own Anus...

  • Does any body know why he has a double pedal on one drum then a single pedal on another bass drum??

  • @CrawfordDrummer

i think the other bass drum is tuned differently from the other one.. so the purpose of it is like a special effects of something...

  • @CrawfordDrummer The other kick sounds different. He has the double on his right kick and the single on his left kick, Its just for more versatility.

  • ugh sick, shit is going on everywhere. haha

  • Hell yeah check that shit out. 0 dislikes. Fuck yeah.

  • mater!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • youre my master derek Roddy!!!!!!!!-janver rigor

  • dude! his accent rules! i never woulda expected that

  • Ya jodrasim your right lots drummers judge on how good a drummer is by there speed not creativity and it annoys me. Im nota big fan of metal drumming because of this reason but if you can play fast and be creative likesome of these drummers like roddy, everything isnt about speed

  • Wooow I love how he switches feet!

  • hahahaha his face at 2:39

  • Sounds like Liquid Tension Experiment for a little while there.

  • @JoeRocksP i was thinkin the same thing haha

  • I love the versatility. Some of these metal drummers are some of the best on the planet.

  • Very , very nice Derek ! There ain't no shotcuts!

  • Generally other musicians who don't play metal can, cuz pretty much if you can play jazz you can because well just has an incredibly broad amount of playing ability... all a jazz drummer would need to do is grasp the idea of Metal being heavier and it not being all about all the little ghost notes and such... whether for a metal drummer they have to bring it alll the way down and the feel of Jazz is pretty hard to grasp compared to metal... thats my opinion I will most likely get booed for this

  • @ned2one i find jazz comes pretty naturally to me

  • @plusbonquetoi Yeah you are you though. I was speaking in general terms

  • @ned2one no it's true man. I learned drums playing jazz and because of that, I've always had the ability to play by ear and compliment the song. seen too many drummers that try to start out playing metal, and it's the only thing they can play (not saying they're all like that).

  • Surprise! He's well versed in every percussion genre. That's called a musician. True artists don't cut themselves off from other styles. It's all music, period.

  • Good drummers always seem really articulate. I`m not a drummer but I like listening to really good drummers play and talk.

  • Damn that's a beautiful drum kit..

  • 2:42 "Go see Nile" FUCK YEAH I LOVE U RODDY! :D

  • love this vid shows the diversity of a good drummer.

  • are those moon gels i see underneath his ride in the beggining?

  • FAIL @ 2:08

  • what band is this guy from?

  • @VampolkaXL i think he's from hate eternal but i might be wrong :)

  • @danieljordison0793 he used to be the drummer for Hate Eternal, now he has his own side projects "Serpents Rise" and "Traumedy"

  • derek roddy is definently one of the best drummers and most talented at complicated beats. too bad they sound bad.I think of a basketball player who can dribble and dunk great. but can't pass and play the game.

its not all about being fancy

  • A phenomenal drummer with amazing technique and versatility. I liked how he kept 4/4 time with his right foot and played a triplet pattern with his left foot. Definitely one of the most gifted drummers out there.

  • Love that drum finish!

  • what song?

  • @metalgrande95 - Temple by his band Traumedy

  • I am not a metal fan but this has to be my favorite metal drummer...He definitely shows what he can do and that its not all about speed

  • @Coolbeansification Not just a metal drummer...a professional drummer with talent in any genre =D

  • @Coolbeansification, yeah i know what youmean. he plays everything, which is awesome. hes so right about the "being versitile" thing, he should tell that to my dad hahah

  • wow, tasty!

  • watching this actually made me respect roddy.

he is one of few heavy metal musicians that arent thinking play fast the whole song!!! and its sad becasue i love heavy music.. just too many new comers thinkin they gotta have fast guitar solos and blast beats in EVERY SONG. remember this...theres always someone faster, and more impressive. how bout be creative and right good, deep, memorable songs.

Be more like Roddy metal heads :)

  • @jodrasim another person that I can agree with I prefer Derek Roddy over most other metal drummers out there because I like to have value in music rather than speed

  • @jodrasim At the same time you have to think about that the drummer is drumming to the music. And if it fits to play fast, then that is what he should do. It's not a matter of feel, it's a matter of fitting the song.

  • @Zilencez94

yea im not against playing fast at all

but if a band opens EVERY SONG with SCREAAMMMM balst blast blast blast blast blast

    it just gets olllld.

Roddy mises the fast wit the feel and thats what i like

  • @jodrasim I hate metal drummers, but anyone that makes it this far instantly has my respect just for the effort they've put in. Except for Travis Barker...He fuckin sucks.

  • @jodrasim LOL dude, how much metal have you listened to. There are alot of bands that dont try to play fast. You sir are not exploring!!! Plus all the tech bands now adays suck nuts.

  • @Punjabi192 im just referring to the countless metal bands that come out with one cd and fail cuz their music has no originality

  • @jodrasim Naw, sometimse there is gold, Wintersun came out with one CD and look at them. i think your thinking of the generic bands that get big and yet the kiddies think they are so original, you know like deathcore*shivers*

  • @jodrasim

    hahaha Again

  • @jodrasim ... If you get a chance I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts about a buddy I grew up withs band who just signed to Metal Bllade this week. Look up "Battlecross - Mike Kreger - Drum Tracking..." I think he is a pretty damn good & original metal drummer(though he told me he'd like to learn more styles like jazz, ect.). Any constructive criticism and/or thoughts would be very cool.

  • @jodrasim

    Hats Off for u buddy

  • @jodrasim george kollias is very similar in that respect :D

  • @jodrasim Chris Adler is another great drummer who understands the actual art form behind making good metal music. He throws in the speedy shit but he uses it tastefully and he does it really well. These noobs who play BLAST BEAT through every song make everyone else t
