because the fans are all little teenagers obsessed with generic new age rock. they love the radio shit that's driven by 3 or 4 5ths with some vocals on top so to actually hear a lead guitar part makes them shit their pants and since they don't know anything about music at all other than the fact you can listen to it, they think it's the most amazing guitar solo ever.

I doubt any of the other members put in a solo there without the him agreeing on it, it's more likely that he wanted the solo there himself. Second, does it really matter how many takes he has? He's obviously doing them perfect in concert.

The difference is in the studio you do it so many times simply because you can! You have the opportunity to get it perfect so thats why things are done so many times
