brakes locked up, tires had no traction, therefore he couldn't turn.

the reason kept going straight was because he wanted to let his tires regain traction, but the only way to do this was to let off the gas, but if he let off the gas he would keep going straight and still crash.

tl;dr, the car lost traction and there wasn't enough time to avoid the crash.
