  • Umm, I know this video is like 4 years old, but Simon Pegg was Scottie, not McCoy.

  • sry to say this but i think it sucked nards compared to the tv show (including next generation)

  • Simon Pegg was Scotty, Hank. Not McCoy.

  • I'm worried that in the new film all I'm going to be thinking is Ohmigawd it's Cumberbatch as a villian! IT'S BENEDICT FRACKING CUMBERBATCH!!!!! and thus shall not be able to see him as the epic actor which he is ='(

  • Hey Hank, do you/ Have your thought about playing Star Trek Online?

  • they wear red shirts so you dont see them bleed in battle, why do you think they wear brown pants?

  • liked it

  • Of course it didn't suck, it was an odd-numbered star trek movie

  • @humpbackbear sorry to say this but rhe ODD ones suck 1/3/5/7/9 SUCKED!!!!

  • "AAHH SYLAR!"

  • 1:17 'Nerd Streak'....Sounds like running naked through a bookshop.

  • Hank, I'm sorry to say I have pwnd your one Star Trek tape, I have about 50 Star Trek tapes which my dad made in the '90s that's every episode of TNG and original series! Though I do still love you Hank!

  • to go boldly, where no nerd has BEEN before... you almost fixed the grammar, but not quite... Iiii|=P

  • AHH! it's Sylar!

  • Totally agree on everything here, except for two things:

1.) Simon Pegg was Scotty and not McCoy

2.) It's Uhura and not Uhuroo.

    Otherwise, awesome review!

  • amzing

  • Simon Pegg was not McCoy

  • Awesome movie.

  • My first name is Tasha. After Tasha Yar of TNG.

  • That got to me ... after seeing Star Trek 6 about a week ago: First you-know-who was with Spock, then with Scotty, and ... how many were there in-between? I wonder if (in this day-and-age) she would be the Counselor Troi, breaking the hearts of a few bad guys and ... the First Officer! I wonder if Counselor Troi has plans for Geordi now ;);)

  • Katherine, he is a successful musician with a strong international fanbase. So in other words, 3) Decepticon, enjoy your crappy life doing supposedly "manly" things such as fixing cars and cutting down trees, but please stop insulting nerdfighters just so you can feel better about yourself, because it distracts us from decreasing world suck. An to all the nerdfighters... sorry for spamming. I just had to get that out of my system. DFTBA!

  • musicians, public speakers etc. And this leads them to fulfilling lives in careers that help make the world a better place, and spend time with the awesomest people on earth ( other nerds.) 2) Please stop making fun of Hank, about whom you clearly know nothing. It's unlikely to impress you, I suppose, about his efforts to help the environment and decrease world suck worldwide by helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. But perhaps it will occur to you that not only is he married to the

  • @ganicalex I know it's been forever since you've commented but I hope you get this so I can set some things straight for you. 1) It's good to be a nerd. Nerds have friends who are also nerds, who have intellectual discussions about things that are actually important, instead of just talking about cars and Lindsey Lohan and whatever. They read books and acquire useful knowledge about the world, and also make themselves more intelligent and better critical thinkers. They are successful students,

  • As far as the coincidences go, JJ Abrams covers that in the commentary saying that, in a deleted scene in which Kirk asks Spock Prime why they met even though the time line has been severely altered, and Spock Prime says, "It is the time line's way of repairing itself."

In short, do not confuse coincidence with destiny.

  • I never liked Star Trek growing up, I was always a Star Wars kid.

However, I really rather enjoyed this movie.

  • Simon Pegg was Scotty :P

Karl Urban was McCoy. Call yourself a Star Trek fan ¬¬

  • :O SIMON PEGG WAS NOT McCOY! He was Scotty! Karl Urban was McCoy...gosh Hank

  • @YouveBeenTerrorized

I spend like five minutes being extremely confused. And then I realized hank just screwed up. Heh.

  • I re-watch ST: TOS every summer religiously, and maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I think the new movie was less JOKES ADVENTURE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP AND MORALS and more WE HAS EXPLOSHUNZ AND SEX WATCH OUR MOVIE ALSO LENSEFLARE PLZ. It made me sadface. Secondly, I know this was said, but Simon Pegg played Scotty. McCoy/Bones was played by Karl Urban. I lo-LIKE you a lot Hank, but I have to say, John is my new favorite brother. ): DFTcheckthecastlist&BA!

  • пиздец..... вот это ботан....

  • I hate star treck or however it is spelt its all about star wars dftba

  • I just saw that movie a few weeks ago. First foray into Star Trek other than the Voyager series, and I quite like it :) Now, to go back and watch all the previous ones, like I'm doing here with B2.0

  • When you talked about the random crewman dying, I yelled "RED SHIRT ALERT!"

  • Spock? Love? Huh? Bothered me so much!!!

  • I gotta say I loved that they included a red shirt in the movie. LOVED IT.

  • Red-Shirts always meet there doom! BWHAHAHAHA

  • Tng for the win!!!

  • I kinda want to meet your wife.....XD at first I typed i knda want to eat your wife

    XD whoops....

  • tos is not bad it's not bad at all it's better than that fucken sitcom deep space 9

  • I loved it. I am a huge Star Wars fan and I liked this a lot. I agree with you on pretty much everything except for the fact that Pegg did a good job as McCoy, he was Scotty (and did great in that role). Bones = McCoy. #facepalm

  • Simon peg was NOT MCCOY

  • commenting late: This got me into the mind set of "gee, I really like star trek (saw this 3 times in theaters) I should start watching the series". We technically I started all the way back with the original and am loving it. I also agree with all of what you have said! My friends dont quite understand my fan girling over this and i am happy to see that i am not the only one who still loves star trek!

  • I love that feeling of calling when someone's about to die in movies.

  • they didn't have to screw the canon

  • I think they got the wrong idea of Kirk. Though I do love Chris Pine.

  • When my boyfriend and I went to see ST 11, I really didnt think I'd like it but I loved it. There was a lot going on here. Like Kirks abusive stepdad. So sad. I enjoyed nearly every part of the movie. I especially liked the Spock/Uhura romance. In the original, looks like the storyline was left open to it but because of the day and time...bad idea. The time travel didnt bother me as much as the DESTRUCTION OF VULCAN, EEEEEEE! I was tramatized. Overall, great movie. Loved Nimoy, too:).

  • that movie was awesome! :) i was obsessed with it for like a year (before i found doctor who) and i designed ships and kept a captain's log and i still have some duct tape gloves with the starfleet insignia on them. :D

  • uh, i did do that... XD im soooo sad that heroes is done :(

  • Also the random crew man had a red shirt.

  • it sucked

  • OMG you did the hand wrong at the end.. -.-

  • McCoy?

  • Anyone else notice that Chris Pine played alongside a character named Chris Pine?

  • OH MY GOODNESS SIMON PEGG WAS NOT MCCOY. He was Scotty.

I am so embarrassed for you right now.

    :)

  • @TheFourOfClubs I thought the same thing... I figured someone would have told him already.

  • This may decrease my nerd points as my nerd friends have pointed out but I must say star trek is not that awesome though i admit to liking the newest movie. But Gene Roddenberry created things better than Star Trek at least in my opinion and those would be Andromeda (best show ever) and Earth final conflict

  • not only was he a random crewmab but he was wearing red

  • Um, the original series is not bad. Don't dis my favorite show! Without TOS, there would be nothing else!

  • Sorry im about to overnerd. The franchise began with leonard nemoy and Jeffrey Hunter, hunter playing christopher pike the first captain of the starship enterprise.

  • Oh my fucking science you are not funny. Shut up and do the fucking review you ass.

  • @TheBigMclargehuge You are so elightened.

  • Great movie but they kind of went a little too far with the black hole time travel.

Random crewman in red shirt = death

  • AH SYLAR

  • I never did understand the Star Trek franchise but I thought the movie was awesome though, one of my favourites for 2009.

  • Good review! I enjoyed it, and I agree with everything you said. Though I was pretty bothered by the time traveling and Vulcan being destroyed. I mean, what was up with that??? But in spite of that, watching this video has made me want to watch the movie again!!

  • Zachery Quinto!! :D I love him :) although he did make a better Syler than Spock ..

  • I mostly agree! But I can't see the Spock/Uhura thing at all...oh well

Also, I love Kirk... So... Yeah. But I've watched TOS sooo many times thanks to my dad that I really can't think otherwise. I don't even know if I've seen all the TNG episodes.

  • Dear Sir Hank, I dearly love you, but you do need to learn how to pronounce Uhura XD

    LL&P

  • @BifaSpace Also, Hank, That was the theme to Next Gen... Not TOS, and therefore this movie...

Fail. We love you, but Fail.

  • I wasn't as crazy about the new Star Trek movie. I didn't like how it took all of the established Star Trek and just chucked it out the window.

and I couldn't imagine a romance between Spock and Ohura....

  • TNG Blows.

  • LOL. Simon Pegg played Scotty. And it's Uhur-A.

But I still forgive you <3

  • you lost me at "hilariously bad"

  • Waitwaitwaitwoahwoahwoah...Simon Pegg wasn't McCoy.

  • i basicly agree with everything you said however i think destroying vulcan was brilliant . it was symbolicly killing the old franchise and sweeping the slate totally clean. now you really have the feeling that anything this could happen, nothing is sacred besides the personalities

  • Simon Pegg played Scotty, not McCoy...and maybe it's because you were talking at warp 8 but it's UhurA not...Uhuru. FEAR MY NERDRAGE!

  • this crazy guy is a bit like doctor who... :)

  • I LOVED this movie. Even a year and a half later I can't get tired of it. It made me a star trek fan. I actually went back and watched all of TOS...and I must admit, it made me laugh SOOOO much, mainly cuz I'm a teenager who's grown up in the age of awesome CGI. but you can't deny love for the shat, nimoy, and kelley. And the orginal cast is the main reason why I'm not a fan of the others series, like TNG.

The only real thing that annoyed me was the Spock/Uhura pairing. KIRK/SPOCK FTW!

  • BTW I MET LEONARD NIMOY. It was for about thirty seconds, but it was awesome. I got a double eyebrow raise :D

  • @Nani101 Oh my god you are so lucky! I WANT TO BE YOU!

  • Both Karl Urban and Simon Pegg are aghast that you have somehow mixed up Bones and Scotty... I mean, I know they both like to drink, but mixing up Scott and McCoy? I don't know, Hank...

  • It was star trek without the intelligence.

  • @saiyaniam I agree...but you can't make a blockbuster with brains.

  • RANDOM CREWMEN!!! DFTBA

  • I love Star Trek TOS! I havent really seen a hole lot of the newer shows :P what can I say...I love Leonard Nimoy! The new movie was epic! I loved it....In my opinion it was pretty cool and can sit next the the Wrath of Khan on my shelf ^^ I also love the enitre cast they chose for the new movie to play the characters of the original crew I think everyone did very well in reminding just how amazing the characters are from the 60s and to date!

    Live long and Prosper! <3

  • lol

  • The Evil Baby Orphanage should be a book...

  • Hank, You need to get Spock's Record "love songs from Space" and William Shatner's Transformed man. They are AWESOME.

  • Good movie, Bad trek. End of story. Being 42 I grew up on the originals, and this ain't my trek...but thats okay, I'll be dead soon and there will be no one that thought this movie sucked. At least there is that to look forward to.

  • I waited a whole year not to see the movie specifically because I thought that they were going to make it suck, but it didn't. I had a big issue with the time travel bs too! They should have taken just a little more time to work out that problem. Looking pass that, it was pretty awesome otherwise! :)

  • peg was scott

  • once again the red shirt rule prevails

  • it was aweeeeeeesomeeeee! and yes, the red shirt kicked the bucket...as usual.lol

  • The random crewman was also a red-shirt. If you know Star Trek you know what I mean.

  • i loved it,the way they did it was way nerdly good(dont ask i is being random.meow)

I like next graviton better than star tack but i loved how every thing changed yay.

  • It was awesome!! :)

  • The Spock/Ahora kissing scene was awesome...Is it just me, or was Kirk's face priceless at that point?

    Redshirts!...or red jumpsuits, at least...

  • I love Star Trek! Why have I not seen this video yet!?!?!

lol Leonard Nimoy is the man I WILL meet someday...

But surprisingly, the random crewmember was NOT wearing a red suit! O_o

  • Thanks for the spoiler warning. I'm dying to see this film, god damn emigration. It's too important to watch it dubbed in another language.

  • Simon Pegg was Scotty, not McCoy...

  • I loooooved it. God, I just wanted to give both Spocks a huge hug the whole time. =3

I saw it in the theater three times. Because I rock like that.

  • They killed spock's mother! The cheek of it!!!

  • I love especially purely nerdy videos like this one.

Yeah, I've mostly been exposed to TNG (which isn't saying much, considering I've only seen the new movie, First Contact, and fragments of random episodes).

Spock didn't jump out as Sylar. I started watching Heroes afterward, so everytime Sylar came out I was like OMG SPOCK!

So, since it was my first complete exposure to Star Trek, I loved the movie.

  • I Loved This Star Trek Movie. Period

My sister and I have been on Star Trek BINGE the past couple weeks watching all the movies when ever we see each other... Some have been sad and some terrible and some amazing so that's my bit

  • wich ones did u think were bad?? i think 2-3-4 were the best....

  • I think i just didn't like the first one of the next generation but its a bit of a jump seeing the differences in the casts... Though thinking back there weren't really any that i didn't like just in comparison to the others I particularly enjoyed the one about V-ger and the Journey Home i think it was with Spock and Genesis

  • My biggest problem was your mix up with Scotty and McCoy. As a fan of TOS, It bothers me when something like that happens. And even though you have seen more TNG than TOS, you should have caught that mistake.

  • Haha, I'm pretty sure it was a slip of the tongue - he's talking so fast and trying to bang out his points. I'll bet this mistake has been pointed out to him a million times in the past near year since the vid was made. :)

  • Hank, Simon Pegg played Montgomery Scott. Not Leonard McCoy. Annotation?

  • star trek rule #1 The guy in red always dies.

  • Also, they destroyed Vulcan because the Planet Vulcan that Spock always refers to in TOS is actually the "ideal colony" that he mentioned at the end of the movie. It suprised me, because i'm a pretty big Trekker (if we're keeping gramatical correctness) and i didn't know that before

  • "random crewman, he's gonna die"

    Yeah, he was a redshirt : P

My favorite guy was Scotty. And that Ewok that followed him to the ship (...how'd he get there??)

  • SPOCK+UHURA <3

  • XD cool ^^

  • Agreed. The whole time-traveling thing was confusing. But was it really time traveling? Or did they just go into an alternate reality? That confused me. Uhora said it was an alternate reality -- Spock agreed. Then the future Spock said that Nero and he were from the "future". Okay..so what is? Both? Or am I trippin' here? Also, I didn't like how they destroyed Vulcan...that made it sad for me too !

Overall, I really enjoyed it. Good things.

  • What is it*?

  • Well, it started of with the time travel of Nero... by interfering with the past there he creates an alternative time line in which Kirk doesn't know his father etc.

    So, it's both ;-)

  • @t0bsch I seeeee. So it's both. Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. Appreciate it.

  • ok it was time travel. But because they time traveled it caused an alternate reality.

  • oh i now see that someone already explained it.

  • *laughs* My family and I are watching original Star Trek episodes as I watch this...

    Nerdfighters!

  • Hey Vamp love, TNG fan here who did get it right and was going to correct, IT's all trek, let's not divide the fanbase here.

  • i agreed with this video on several points however i am very unhappy with the fact that you insulted TOS.

Also i would like to point out that McCoy was played by Karl Urban, not Simon Peg. Simon Peg played Scotty. this is what happens when a TNG fan watches TOS related things, he can't get the characters straight.

  • P.S. Having recapped on Star Trek since my immersion in TNG growing up... the random crewman theory (also known more commonly as the red-shirt guy) is a long running joke. Obviously destroyed in TNG with the modification of unifom crew assignment colours

  • Hehe. Love how you did the TNG theme song... like me you're a 3rd generation Treker

  • I LOVED the new Star Trek with a PASSION! XD

  • lol, "the original series, its rediculously bad"

i got into star trek with the next generation too, and I loved this moive for seeing the original series without terrible shatner acting.

and yes, even though the timeline was changed, some things were different from before the change. like pike and chekovs birthdate.

and lol "yeah, random crewman, he's gonna die"

    and he was a redshirt!!!!

  • Yeah, there are two types of episodes for the Original Series: ridiculously bad, and amazingly timeless.

  • Well most of it was in another timeline so they could just make stuff up.

  • Liked it! Some parts were a little guy-flickish though.

Hmmm...like the really long fist-fighting scenes, or the Ahora undressing, or the Ahora running around for no reason, or the Ahora laughing at a really bad come-on joke. But mostly good- I give it 9 stars!

  • to go boldly..into your first womans pants! haha jk. good review.

  • starship troopers+90201+star wars RotS=star trek (2009), I still enjoyed the movie it to me is good reboot and it explains the reboot in the movie...I had some problems with some things but it was a fun movie! Other remakes have failed***cough, GI Joe, cough***

  • TOS-the effects+TNG's firepower-TNG's brains+BOTH TOS and TNG's heart=ST09

As a Trekker and a HUGE fan of TOS and TNG equally (the other three to varying degrees) I loved the fim.

-Retains the heart and HUMOR of Trek, especially TOS, which was often VERY funny... and this movie had great humor

-Casting great, as a Chekov fan happy

-Nero thread a bit weak, but the origin of everyone makes the movie

-Reminds me of my friends and I in drama, and now THEY like Trek

  • Hehe, you called Scotty McCoy.

Oh Red Shirts, will you ever learn?

Did love the movie. Nice that I'm just watching this now, a few days before the DVD comes out.

Will you be buying? I will.

  • Yep. Agree. Destruction of Vulcan and some crazy plot coincidences all forgiven because of how much FUN this movie is.

  • but there was one thing unclear to me...

when enterprise was doing all that destroying nero stuff, where was the rest of star fleet that was with them went they went to vulcan?

  • They weren't supposed to go after neros ship. So they had to do it on their own.

  • after i watched it again and nero said he destroyed them all

the enterprise was the only star ship that survived

  • the romance between spock and uhura was unnecessary and i really didnt like it

maybe it was to show his half humanness

but that was going to be shown when he got all mad at jim

    hm. i dont know

it was okay with it in but it wasnt totally needed, in my opinion

i liked how spock was played though

    well done on his part

all the characters did well i think

i thought it was strange that he found spock prime in that cave, too

but i figured it had to do with the time travel destiny type thing

  • Dude, every random crewperson dies on Star Trek.

  • mostly the ones in red shirts! lol. why red though?

  • Awesome review. :) I freakin' loved this one.

*Apparently*, my friend's friend is related to Leonard Nimoy. I don't quite believe that, though. :D

  • Love your intro! I love Star Trek! My Dad totally loves that series! We bought him lots, I love the first generation!

  • live quick but have a blast!!!!

  • Seems to me you forgot to take your medications the day you filmed this... Q'pla!

  • basically everything u said was the way i felt about the movie

    LIVE LONG AND PROSPER!

  • I love the new Star Trek movie and I've been watching Star Trek since I was little cuz my dad was a Trekie, but it was very good!

  • Spock acts really smug. It really annoyed me that, when Spock was leaving the bridge (to beam down and rescue Vulcan's elders/his parents), Ohura questioned him and he stopped to have a lil' 'this an' that' w/ her.

WTF, Spock!!? You're the Captain!! The situation was already appraised and made known. Wait, no, wait. Ohura wants to steady her grip on your Vulcan balls. He should've (stoically) shut that lift door in her face.

Spock played like a jackass (IMO). The romance = 2 contrived.

  • You could tell he was going to die because he had a red shirt on. Duh!

  • Hahaha! I sooo totally knew as soon as I saw the red space suited guy he was going to get WTF P02n3d! Great Review!

  • star trek was EPIC

  • I stopped after you said TOS was hilariously bad. Fail, one star.

  • Amazing review. Sometimes it was hard for me to understand everything, because you're talking sooo fast! But my school englisch works (I'm German).

  • also 12 monkeys - only good time travel film.

  • There is a Spanish film which was recently released, TIME CRIMES. I'm not gonna claim that it's perfect. However, as a story which involves a bit of time travel, I believe it to work rather well.

  • Technically we can split infinitives. I know! They all lied to me too.

So we can do this when the other option 'to go boldly' just sucks.

  • Your hands were moving very wildly.

  • Crikey I'm a nerd... Simon Pegg played Scotty, not McCoy :O

Amazing video, I wholreheartedly agree :D

  • Haha, dude, love the "intro". xD

  • I thought it was spectacular. Or should I say Spocktacular? *goofy grin* okay, moving on from that lame pun...it was one of the most well-done movies I've ever seen. It got me watching TOS (btw, I disagree that they are 'hilariously bad.' They are amazing, particularly for the time period.) and now I want to watch Heroes just to see more of Zachary Quinto's acting.

  • Was finally able to see the movie, so now I can watch Part 2 :-D

I loved it. It's a great new direction their taking the franchise in. Hopefully they can keep it up for the sequel.

  • saw the movie 4 times in theatres.

    loved it, obviously!

never saw the original star trek unfortunately, though

  • simon pegg was scotty

  • Just so you know, you did the Vulcan hand sign wrong, which completely shoots down you Trekkie cred.

  • AAAAH SYLAR

  • Hi Hank. Having grown up with the original Star Trek and ST:TNG, the "Red Shirt" character (security) was known as "Ensign Expendible" by most trekkies.

  • OMG you got the Vulcan hand gesture wrong! Are you sure you're really a fan? Stick your thumb out next time!

  • Never beam down in a red shirt!

  • Ever noticed? In the original series, it's almost always the random crewman that is wearing the red shirt that dies. Can't remember if that was true in the movie, but oh well!

  • Yeah, they make jokes about that in a lot of cartoons. And it was true in the movie.

  • Im sure you've gotten this comment already but... Simon Pegg played Scotty not McCoy!

  • I had a huge nerd fit when Nimoy and young Spock were talking.

  • Simon Pegg didn't play McCoy.
