  • There was genius in all musical styles beginning in the 60's. The music reflected both deep feeling and thought. Van Zandt certainly represents the best of the craft in country.

We are steeped in idiocracy these days, and the music reflects it.

  • this is about as badazz as they come! Just listen to these lyrics! Shrouded in abstraction that only becomes illuminated upon many listenings!

  • yea this is real neat.

  • If Stephen King was a song a songwriter, he would scribe something like this, it just wouldn't be as good.

  • just perfect

  • Thank you for posting this, terr0rkitten.

  • I love.

  • another one lonely dislike!!!!Anyone else noticing this? on some of Townes best stuff there is just one dislike. I don't particularly care except i have ADD and that one dislike sticks out like a sore thumb.

  • @terrifictanner1 Do not fret over that one. Maybe he or she is deaf, and in worse shape than you. At least you appreciate good music when you hear it.

  • Respond to this video... I can't believe it took me so many years to discover this man. He is beyond words.

  • @terrifictanner1 Its just some talentless asshole being jealous. Just ignore it LOL!

  • I'm a huge Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen fan, but I am honestly starting to think that neither of them have anything on Townes. God damn.

  • @thedylanschrader :

i'm a newcomer myself ....i've missed a lot. I'm amazed at the depth of feeling and reality of the voice and the lyrics...I thought i was a Zeppelin fan unitl now.

  • @thedylanschrader Tu ra lura lie ooohh...

  • @thedylanschrader yeah I found him about a year ago, I was starting to think I wouldn't find anything that got any better than Dylan or Cohen, etc. He should've and would've been more famous than he was, but he self-destructed. His own demons were responsible for his obscurity. Thank God for Pandora letting me stumbling over him.

  • This 10th anniversary of 9/11, and God FINALLY throws me a lifeline worth its salt, TVZ! I ain't the first, and sure as hell hope I ain't the last.

  • completely bad azz! GREAT song!

  • What can I say? Tis the best.

  • TVZ> There is nothing like him. NOTHING....

  • One of his best for sure and for certain..

  • reminds me Londonderry

  • The passion that todays music lacks.

  • I really want to hear from the person who felt the need to click the dislike button on this. Usually, I just assume everyone has their own taste, but I don't see where you can justify not just not loving but actively disliking this song.

  • I never thought I liked country music till I heard this!

  • @futuredeath Kinda how I feel.

  • @futuredeath Country? No....just music....music from the heart.

  • @futuredeath

Country? No....just music...music from the heart.

  • @alanbyrd its technically folk....but who cares...its just good music

  • Creepy song. Really beautiful.

This is like night and day when compared to the country music I hear on the radio.

  • @NOUFGT True, yet there are elements of Folk in here. It's not entirely country. It's like if someone slowed down Mama Tried by Merle Haggard and mixed it with Leonard Cohen's Songs From A Room.

  • That, my friends, is pure poetry!

  • Biiiig thanks to my older brother for introducing me to this guy. :)

  • @octoclara i thank david for introducing me

  • fuckers feel the burn.......I does everyday

  • If I were President, I would make TVZ America's Poet Laureate, post mortem.

  • Thanks Townes, happy birthday!

  • I almost never cried the last 15 years and if i have very small drops in my eyes now that is much.

His music makes my house better and that is why country like this never may be stolen out of our heart and room!!

  • When I hear him I think of what he could give us today. There will never be another Townes But there will be others who want to be like him, me included. Every song writer should paste their music beside his and see how they really are. They should ask others how Townes would have done it and KEEP IT SIMPLE because that is what he done. His music will live longer than the beatles and other rock, country, folk, and anyother music you will listen to on the radio. rest in peace Townes Van Z

  • erie

  • i love that this video has 0 dislikes.

  • One of my favs.

    RIP Townes.

  • No way to describe this song except purely fucking shamanistic

  • Thanx guys. ;)

  • if u want music like this today look up justin townes earl he is named after townes van zandt and also joe pug thats some good shit

  • This is my favorite song of all time. It is truly nonpareil. I think that every man has experienced this sometime in his life. It is simply phenomenal.

  • I'm 16 yrs old and i love this kind of music! haha I love this song :D <3

  • Damn, no music like this today. :(

  • @heretikcic Yes there is. Just gotta know where to look.

  • such a great song. i want to hear nick cave cover this haha

  • @deadaquarius its so strange...i found this band via nick cave to...saw the grinderman concert 2 weeks ago...out of this world. Take care now!

  • @markobegus does grinderman have a new album?

  • @markobegus Townes Van Zandt is not a band.

  • @deadaquarius

    YES!!!!

  • .... her eyes turn to poison

  • @UncleYuba the only reason I found this song was because I remembered this lyric and looked it up. I NEVER remember lyrics.

  • The best part about him is his lyrics and how he's country ;)

  • @Anberlinfanforevar21

half country, half american gothic.... like an edgar allan poe in cowboy boots

  • @zenmaster72 Interesting connection you made there. You are quite right!

  • this song goes right to the top of my list!

  • To My Love Samantha

  • i heard this song yesterday...couldnt stop listening...im so glad i found the artist...

  • Someone recommended him to me. I like him more and more with every listen.

  • You could listen to most any commercial country radio station FOREVER and not hear a real song like this. Such a sad world we live in.

  • @Stranger253 amen to that brother.

  • This song is so amazingly epic, yet relatable to every man who has dreamed of a woman that he couldn't have. Perfect!

  • fuck... this song makes it hard to breathe...

  • god damn what a song, what a voice..

  • eerie, mystical, hypnotic, and gorgeously dactylic. i know it's already crowded on that coffee table, and i know i'm a late-comer to the party. but i don't take up much room. i wear a size 6 pump, but if you let me up there, i'll balance on one foot!

  • @Tamelanj1 I see your account is closed...too bad. Just had to check out a size 6 pump, especially one who Loves Townes enough to get on that Bob Dylan coffee table.

  • Thanks for sharing! Miss you Townes...

  • Haunting & Beautiful

  • this song is off the charts beautiful and vivid. I was just turned on to him, and he is quickly becoming a habit of me and my guitars.

  • pure songwriter not pretender

  • a wreck havoc is goverment more special is people

  • Folk Ballads are some of my favorite pieces of music. I love this one! Thanx!

  • wow I've found somethin' new to listen to...

  • ...so have I......LOL....oh it's a beautiful ballad no doubt about that!!!

CHEERS MATE AND THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD!...and another search begins.....

  • He wasn't made for this world...

  • so ive just been turned onto Townes.

    i love him.

  • I recently got into his music by being a Mighty Boosh fan. Long story, not enough characters to explain it. This song is beautiful. I didn't know he wrote Pancho and Lefty another of my fave songs. Amazing. Wish he was still around to write beautiful songs. RIP

  • Amazingly hard core traditional American country for a British boys the Boosh. Well, that's cool. It's good to listen to a lot of different stuff. 'splains the cowboy hat and boots. ;0))

  • In that same quote, he said he liked Gram Parsons. Will send you some of his stuff. It is pretty hard core country too. I was amazed when I heard this stuff, not just by its beauty but Noelio AKA Mr. Vince "punk" Noir listens to this? :)

  • @AnitaLife27 his words transcend cultures & generations. Folks might not talk like this but...I'm pretty sure they do Dream like this...Keep lookin' at Townes you'll soon realize you've found buried treasure.

  • @Okiebluesbabee77

I would love to know how the Boosh>Townes trajectory works...

  • lonesome irish cowboy ballad

  • I Love This Song. I don't know how I heard it first. I somehow lost possession of it a year ago... Thanks. I think I'll buy the album. Although, its too late, my dollars aren't being drank by the man.

  • Troubled genius.

  • Yet another great song from Townes. He was the best. . . . REM's Swan Swan Hummingbird seems inspired by this song. . .

  • yes--i'd be curious too. very beautiful song. thank you for the upload.

  • I wonder if this story is something that Townes just made up, or could it be based on some old local folklore he was exposed to?

  • I think I remember listening to some of these songs on the radio, when I was like 2 years old?

  • The first time I heard this song was sitting in a dorm room fucked up. Truly amazing song.

  • Another great song. Thank you terrOrkitten for uploading this...........

  • Truly a very beautiful song

  • from a pure man and guitar songwriting standpoint, our mother the mountain may be the best album ever made

  • from a man that loves (almost) all kinds of music -from folk to IDM to black metal- "Our Mother the Mountain" is for sure the best album ever made!

  • My introduction to Van zandt was strangely enough through smolken's cover of this song. Towns expresses more in one song then what most modern bands express in thier carrers.

  • "modern bands"

    oh shut up

  • Hahahaha! This has made my day. I enjoy being called on my shit. Especially when new thoughts arise from it. What right do I have to generalize all "modern bands" as soulless or without expression. There is no denying though that Towns was a phenomenal song writer.

  • @kenzorules yes generalizations should not be made, there are good modern musicians but it would be safe to say that most pop/mainstream/assembly line produced music on MTV,GAC, etc. is shit

  • this song will forever spread shivers down my spine... so incredibly and eerily beautiful.

  • well said!

  • From one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

  • The real marlboro man

  • Townes will for ever live in my memory :-)

Not a single day, without thinkin' about him.

  • Amen

  • @devofromoslo *forever

  • @devofromoslo 1969 san antonio. I was 19 and fortunate to have met people who sponsored me into playing professional. One was EJ Bond, who, at the time was head engineer at Jeff Smith's Texas Sound on Hildebrand, the first "gig" I played in that town. jACK HADa LOOK that went thru ya. I felt lucky to have eyes like his on my straight young ass.

HE had the MOUNTAIN album. If not for that it'd probably taken me longer to fall into TVZ, I want his PENCILS!.

Writer, in the grand style.wide strokes.

  • @devofromoslo

    egzakkli man

    van zandt ftw

  • Townes will never be forgotten. I will sing and play his songs for all to hear!

  • @ReaganD Amen! Go for it...run the race till the end as Townes did. You've already made the name Reagan greater, just by your efforts.

  • @ReaganD me too! I gona buy a guitar imediately for learning his songs
