  • whether talking or playing, Paco is a pleasure to watch and listen to

  • Love the NBC logo on the top right...expecting to hear "Up next, your late local news, followed by the Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

  • sin duda el es el ABSOLUTAMENTE EL MEJOR GUITARRISTA EL MAS COMPLETO MUSICO FLAMENCO CLASICO JAZZ FUTURISTICO Y ANTIGUO POR Q E SO HERMANO ES UN DON DIVINO,...DIOS TE BENDIGA FRANCISCO SANCHEZ

  • erm i am very talented and open

  • ehm I'm a crazy American girl

  • hehe I know what you need...I got everything you need

  • it's a game

  • all what our brains want to do,is to play the guitar.

  • I remember searching for Paco's music and videos via eMule program.

    Ahh good early Internet times.

  • man.. flamenco puts my 10 years of boring rock/folk playing to shame.

  • paco easily kicks al di meolas ass.... al is ok.... paco and mclaughlin is where its at......

  • Good performers - in love with their skills, others - with their music

Хороший исполнитель - влюблён своё мастерство, плохой - в свою музыку

  • i've heard all of the guitar greats. kurt rosenwinkle, wayne krantz, shawn lane, frank gambale, allan holdsworth, and all the others. i LOVE all of those guys and their music soooo much. and I know their styles are extremely different. but for me, paco is unquestionably the greatest guitar player. when i hear him play, it's just magic. he is the greatest guitar player in the world. truly.

  • @dasilvaj2008 I'm in complete agree with you :)

  • hey men, they are not competing!!! they totally don't care who's the best, because they are different and that 's why this association work as well!each one come with his own style and feeling and that why it sounds great!and they are so experienced and brilliant that they know when their time is coming and also give time and place to other musician, sharing a wonderfull moment of music; whenyou play in a band, the first thing to learn is to ear the other to make them better, it is an exchange!

  • so where is part two, it says "end of part one" at the end. ;-)

  • 6:50 words of truth

  • Man, Mediterranean sundance is truly a masterpiece.

check out my cover and interpretation if you have the time!

    Cheers =)

  • they dont need to talk

    the guitar talks for them

  • Gary Oldman: secret flamenco shredder.

  • Three Lords from the guitar-heaven! Everyone with his own technique! And Paco de Lucia is the best to my mind!

  • Paco: The stimulation... of playing with... two of the greatest guitarists of the world... that is enough... to...

John: (rises, grabs from his pocket and hands over) One pound.

    Paco: Thank you.

    -

John: If you give me a million dollars, if it isn't fun, I wouldn't do it.

    Paco: John is very rich.

    -

Al: ... and it is instrumental. You know, if we have to put it somewhere. But eh..

John: Don't put it anywhere. It's called the music we play.

  • wow! they're the guitarist masters! and i was privileged to see them live, hopefully they'll give a trio concert soon...

  • Excellent performance by these Great Artist.

    Caracas,Venezuela.

  • 1996 to 2010 almost 15 years. I think the time has come to see them back together with the Trio.

    we want them back together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I adore them!

  • Paco englich version jeje

  • You're right! But I think Meola developed a lot. Now he does different things. He played slow too. You can hear that for example in the tune "Night Club 1960" from the CD "World Sinfonia II: Heart Of The Immigrants". I recommend to hear it!

  • Well, I'm glad at least ONE PERSON agrees with me. As evidenced below, I note that my comment was deleted, presumably because it received six thumps down.

  • it's, your opinion, But , they're not playing flamenco.

  • Without question these three guys broke the mould on skill and technique. In 1980 there was a little album called "A Friday Night in Sanfransico" and it blew everyone else out of the water.

Truly Legendary Masters. Inspiration for some of the greatest players to follow.

They set the bar that all of us aspire to jump over.

  • Paco is been the best Flamenco guitarist in the world so far. He's career is been long (30+yrs). and he was much faster in his younger years. The 3 make a good group together, but the other 2 are good in their own style (electric), not exatly in the spanish guitar since Paco is still #1, it shows in clarity.

  • I think music is not a competition but an expression and all these three put together really express that... Their musical creativity, technical dexterity, and phrasing is par excellence. They all are great at whatever they do may it be electric and acoustic... Paco has been number in Flamenco guitars and he has made is mark but that doesn't the remaining 2 are any less out there. I think they all bring out the best in each other and that's what makes them a dynamic trio :)

  • @alexcyberone ...30 years ?? ... he was born in 1947, and the age of 12 was already profesional !!... from 1960 let´s say... gis first solo album in 1965... It makes it longer. Since the end of 80´s he started to say that is not about speed but expresion... And his music became better than ever...

  • @HJF091173

That's why I put the "+" behind the years and after the 30.

  • @alexcyberone

" He's career is been long (30+yrs)" What damned 30+years?!

Born in 1947, at age 11 he made his first public appearance on Radio Algeciras. A year later he was awarded a special prize in the Jerez flamenco competition. In 1961, he toured with the flamenco troupe of dancer José Greco. In 1964, he met Madrileño guitarist Ricardo Modrego with whom he recorded three albums.

Where you find just 30 years?! 45-50!

  • lol@ when he gives paco money

  • The 3 Amigos. I love them

  • "If you give me a million dollars and its not fun, I wouldn't do it" "John has been rich" Loooool amazing trio

  • Awesome Trio

  • Dumb The only Flamenco guitarist in there is Paco. The rest are Jazz guitarists, and the best jazz guitarists ;)

  • I think all of them are the best FLAMENCO guitaris in the world,

and sorry guys but in other type of music... U know what i mean?

I love blues (B.B King), rock (Led Zeppelin) sometimes even metal ;) (metallica) and untyped music (The Cinematic Orchestra).

So let this world be happy of having such a great arthist. Cheers!

hope everyone understood my englisch :/

    5/5

  • Hey John is Good too!

  • I love John Maclaughlin accent!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Paco is the complete package

    technically he is great.

also there is nothing like a spanish musician playing the instrument that is his own. the others are good but this is in paco's blood!

  • Best three guitarists in history.... but ANYONE that knows ANYTHING about playing a guitar would know that PACO IS GOD!

  • Although it is true that they say: it is the musician that represents the instrument to its highest level, But as a classical/flamenco guitar student, I KNOW how difficult what Paco does is. Flamenco's technics(advance finger-style& varius Rumbas) is beyond acoustic guitar...Paco proved himself to be the most humble of all them...go figure...

  • Paco and Al will never die.

  • I don't get what happens at 1:36 or something, when John gives paco some money, could you explain please?

  • It's a joke...... :-)

    (like a bribe......!!!)

  • i noticed. But I wanted to know what they're saying, can you tell me?

  • What's difficult to understand about it ?

paco: "playing with of the greatest guitarplayers in the world can be very stimulating"

john hand's him over the money for saying that

clearly paco is the most vrtuose of the three

    ;-)

  • thank you

  • I thought he gives him the pound because he said that he is one of the greatest?

  • how can you compare finger style with picking?

  • its all preference of sound i think...you cant really compare any musician to anyone except himself. a musician to a style but not a style to a style...

  • Paco is so funny...:)

  • It's funny how Paco's being modest and saying stuff like "I'm playing with both of the best gutarists in the world" and "while they were sleeping I was had to practice" while he actually owns them both single handed...

  • I wouldnt say that he owns them but he is at the sam level

  • no sabia que paco de lucia sabia ingles

  • Al's so smooth he smokes weed when he composes ;)

  • are you joking or you know this? i am curious dude :)

  • who's to say what's right and what's wrong?

  • beliving jazz is the wrong notes = not understanding complex harmonies and the concept och musical tension and relese

  • QUE MARAVILLA!!!

  • John weakly attempting to convince himself of a lie; " I am an electric guitarist, I love acoustic, but I'm an electric player... no really... I am..."

    ;-)

  • If uve heard his Mahavishnu stuff.....I think you wudnt say that....

  • I have heard all Mahavishnu and saw them live 13 times. I still say that.

  • Hmm....k

  • sounds completely reasonable to me thou

  • not to sound negative, its not my intent... but, what is wrong with john mclaughlin? if im not mistaken, he's of british decent, but speaks with a REALLY bizarre sort of accent... almost french

  • he lives in monte carlo or some other french-spoken place... thats why he got that wierd french accent... but he still play that guitar like none other. he's cool accent or not

  • you r an ass dude...

  • You're an uneducated ass.

  • this is a acaustic g3!!!

  • you cannot compare awesome musicianship (McLaughlin, De Lucia, Di Meola) to crap (Vai etc.) sorry

  • Acoustic G3 heheheh yeah!

  • rest strokes. You should be able to hear that !

Al is pacos "lost child". Paco seems actually very impressed by him, as I and many others

  • can someone tell me if paco de lucia uses rest stroke or free stroke for his very fast runs?

  • Rest, dominantly. His fast cross-string playing is generally free-stroke, but the lead parts are rest strokes.

  • And he also uses rest stroke when he plays with his thumb.

  • yo what is rest and free strokes?

  • I don't know

  • al rock

  • There are many power trios in music...Cream, Rush...ELP...Dada. Nothing compares to the guitar power of these three gents. I was lucky enough to see them in the 80's (with Steve Morse!) and it was the ultimate guitar experience. If only the technology was available to capture that night in Elizabeth, NJ in 1984. *sigh*

  • you all must know that is harder to play a spanish guitar than the acoustic ones. you can have some mistakes with the acoustic but no one with the spanish caouse sounds really bad.

  • Are you sure Paco plays with two fingers???? I always thought he used to play with his three fingers. Now, I am totally dissapointed with myself because I can almost get the same speed as him but with one more finger. I think he is not human!

  • man these three are just incredible....no point in arguing. I'd be happy to have the skills as any of the three and they are three of my favorite players. Paco is a straight flamenco player so you can't complain that the others aren't as natural as him...thats what he plays. But it's not like Paco is gonna be heard on a Mahavishnu cd or dueling with dimeola on race with devil on spanish highway haha.

  • so they were like a band or sth?

  • They are all very good, I dont think you can say who the best is. Meola is very technical and fast, Paco is very expressive, and Mclaughlin just pwns.

  • Not only does Paco play the most complex parts of the 3, and (in my opinion) the best music; he also seems to be the nicest person with great character.

  • Although Paco is one of my favorite guitar players, talking about complex parts, John Mclaughlin owns...he mixes times, silences and modes in an amazing creative way..if you try playing licks of the 3 you'll see.... in spite of this, the 3 express their feelings in different ways and I like 'em all, :)

  • i think they're all sort of equal when it comes down to it, mclaughlin is more unique, de lucia displays amazing technique, and di meola has the ability to play astunningly fast AND clean which is especially difficult considering he is playing a steel stringed guitar

  • I totally agree about Al. Im astonished at how clean his playing is. His tone is incredible.

  • at least in this genre, Paco puts the other tow to shame. That's saying something.

  • On the audio concert website JAZZFUSION(dot)TV , there is a good 1983 Trio concert recorded at Beacon theatre , New York . Sound quality not great , but its ok , they are mostly doing numbers from the 2nd album . There are also concert opening songs by Steve Morse.

  • Paco's mindset speaks the ultimate truth. Its not about the instruments or any music style because it is all about the person who is playing the music.

  • friday in sun francisco ... i like the most

  • Paco habla ingles!!!!!!!

  • @contact1araya Sí, y además toca la guitarra. Amazing.

  • You know what's amazing? This was mainstream television only 12 years ago.

I'm looking up at the NBC peacock logo in the top right hand corner and thinking "Wow! If TV had stuff this cool on it, I'd watch it all the time!"

There is no stupid reporter, no flashy logo. Just a nice, thoughtful 10 minute report on these 3 great musicians.

  • That's real food for thought...

  • paco is the man (end of talk)!

  • Di Meola is still an ego maniac and it comes across in his playing - his tone sounds like shit.

  • He's my least favorite of the three. I don't know if it's his pick or guitar, or just him, but his tone always reminds me of plastic.

  • I agree, though i want to point out hes using a steel string ovation. While Paco and John are using nylon string wood guitars. I never really liked Ovation guitars, after a couple of days use they lose all the tone. Plus nylon strings, in my opinion, just sound better by comparison.

  • Actually ovation guitars are made with plastic parts. I dont like it to much. I prefer a Takamine.

  • Uh, dude, Paco's playing those "scales" using ALL REST STROKES. "..can play"!?! Paco's technique is other-worldly compared to the other two.

  • can anyone tell me if paco is using three or 2 finger technique for the 32nd note runs?

  • The fastest technique in flamenco is "picado", two fingers

  • He uses tow fingers. Three is for tremolo and rasgueo. He can play as fast as he can think since he was very young, he says in a documentary called Francisco Sanchez that he learned to play at the same time he learned to speak, like he has always knew.

  • It is the guitar + her is always palm muting,so here you go

  • all three of these guys are amazing , any one that says one or the other is great and the others arent obviuosly dont know shit

  • Sorry, but Paco is better.

  • right on.

  • Arr Paco seems like the coolest guy you could want to play music with. Such genuine love for the instrument - really admirable, likeable.

  • That's because he isn't a flamenco, classical, or acoustic guitar player. In his heart you can tell he is a pure musician.

  • @01:28

Paco: "...playing with two of the greatest guitarists of the world..."

    LOL PWND

  • i like that paco did not say that electric guitar is inferior....that was cool of him

  • The composer of Mediterranean sundance is Paco de Lucia. He has recorded it on his album " Almoraima " ( 1976) with the name Rio Ancho. Al di Meola has nothing to do with this song, he just improvise his solos just like Mc Laughling does.

  • mediterranean sundance is also composed (a part of it) by al di meola...and its part of his "elegant gypsy" album...

paco's rio ancho does not have the little arpeggiated part of intro

the version the usually play live is a combination of rio ancho and mediterranean sundance..so don't take out the credit from al...

anyway, the song is oriented to flamenco, so obviously paco feel more comfortable than al and john

  • Mclaughlin has a guitar wich is a mix of AL's guitar and Paco's one

  • Der welt hat 3 könige... :-)

These 3 are just the best...

  • lol i didn't know paco was also a comediant.

    nice video. very funny

  • Paco is surely the most intuitive and admirable (perhaps even greatest) guitar player I have ever seen.

  • you´re right man

  • I hate the fact that they laugh when Paco mentions how all the love and hate they experience is implemented in the music and ideas :( even though it sounds cheesy it's still true

  • aha, when he says it it sounds natural and these guys laugh. But I guess the three of them were good buddies and that they would tease each other like that..

  • @Floydinizer Paco is making fun of everything. Thats why MEola cant hold on and starts laughing. He is like "oh my god, all this love, all this hate, during these years" He is laughing at himself and at the whole thing together. That part is hilarious.

I have seen lot of interviews with PAco, and because he talks always with such a serious face, some people just dont get his jokes. He is a genius, like a genius he is humble and like a humble man he laughs at everything including himself.

  • @tubal1

YES! Thanks for tour insight. Such a perfect observation!

  • roflmao Paco "imagine how many things we lived,....how much hate..., how much love..." :)

  • These guys come from different genres, they are masters at their style, yet they show profound respect for eachother as musicians.

  • Yes that is very nice from you, but it is obvious that in this case Paco is being ironic. You just have to see the way he is speaking and how he stops.

  • Actually , its quite amazing that a guy with a pick can keep up with a Flamenco guitarist. Flamenco guitarists are known for speed , applying all fingers too scale runs = speed.

  • Flamenco guitarists play scale runs with two fingers. Picado technique is quite incredible. Paco has some of the most advanced picado technique in the world. It's amazing he can keep up with picks.

  • its easier 2 play scales faster with a pick than it is with i,m scales..

  • You are right. Learning to play guitar with fingers is way more difficult but once you have the technique you can play faster than with a pick.

  • agreed. Kinda obvious, isn't it? If you have four or five finger nails, that's 4 or 5 picks, right?

  • Hey, by the way - If anyone DOESN'T own this album, you MUST get it. It's called "The Guitar Trio" and the cover just has the 3 musicians name on the front.

I own it and it's one of the best guitar albums EVER. Different than "Friday Night In San Fransisco" but JUST AS GOOD in it's own way. Amazing compositions, stunning solos. Just take my word for it, go to Amazon and buy it NOW.

  • thanks I'll go looking for it now.

  • heretherenothing - Did you find it? They have used ones on Amazon for around 5 bucks!

If you buy it, let me know how you like it!

  • What scares me is the fact that Paco can play as fast and clear as the other two with his fingers. I would wet my pants if I were put even two miles from his position.

  • I agree...bare fingers.. sounds different too..

  • Paco's supremecy is soo obviose

And on top of that he has a beautiful spanish accent.

  • To jest nie samowite jak ten człowiek potrafi grac na gitarze akustycznej!

  • I ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE REPORT BUTTON AND WITH DIRE CONVICTION AND DEDICATION WILL RECORD THIS AGAIN AND HOPE THAT IT IS NOT DELETED FROM MY FAVORITES!

    Shiite happens - sorry!

    Ludwig von Blogue XVII

  • its like a beautiful G3 concert

  • yeah!

  • The song they play at 0:50 is Al Di meolas Mediterranean Sundance.

  • From his Elegant Gypsy album, 1977.

  • (don't know the song name but i've heard it many times before) the tune at 50 seconds in, it is very similar to "Mirage" by Jean Luc Ponty on the album "Enigmatic Ocean". which one came first? (I am not implying that any copying, i am just curious)

  • hahaha! I haven't heard john speak before. He sounds really nice, like a mothers sweet little child with candy in his hands. I'm sorry. I love john McLaughlin.

  • There are no rules except individual when an artist zeros into his/her craft sometimes the pressure can bring the most raw, spontanious surprise, especially if they are into it. These guys are the cream of the crop and can intuitively hone in from inspiration..I like their sound together now better than before. A good artist always needs a challenge. I saw them in Texas twice back in the 70's and have two albums from then besides their solo ones and Return to Forever.

    My ear has evolved too.

  • Is it just me or do their guitars sound out of tune?

  • it's you !

  • I think Paco and Al don't like it too much, that John devaluates their compositions a little bit by saying that "you can do it in a couple of days", I am not sure if this is true, because when I listen to many of Paco's works, it does not seem to me as if he composed that in 10 minutes, that would make it worthlessly

  • I doubt they would agree with the comparisson of writing their tunes and Parsifal or Beethoven's 9th as he said. Listen to what they have to say. ;)

  • Sorry, this was supposed to be a reply to another comment. I meant to say I doubt they disagree with the comparisson John McLaughlin made. :) All in all, I think they're great to watch solo, even better to watch going trio.

  • like a cabron ... hahaha paco, man how could he writes his tunes so fast in a few days, thats amazing, listen to the album, the tunes are so complex

  • i was like a CABRON composing, xD
