All of the volunteer efforts have made progress little by little, but it's still far from being "back to normal." When we went, the people organizing the relief efforts estimated that it would be about a 10-year process before things finally started to look the way they did before Katrina.

That's why it's important that people keep volunteering even after the disaster stops showing up on the news; "out of sight, out of mind" is something that these people have really been struggling against.
