If it's not patently obvious that he's "whooping" inside, then you need a hearing test! Why would you care what he LOOKS like? I'm only worried about the incredible MUSIC that he's making. Extrodinary talent and work involved in this stuff. THANK YOU EECO! It's amazing! I just wish the fidelity was better.
This guy has such amazing control that I'm kind of aching to see him get worked up at his own playing, at least a little, and bash syncopated chords whilst whooping. I hope he's whooping on the inside...
Ah yes! "Interpretation".... Eeco is a gift from Boogie Woogie Heaven. Cherish his "interpretations" and give him MEGA props for recognizing those that came before. You can't LEARN to play as he does. You got it or you don't.
that's just amazing. i'm not sure where you're from, but playing boogie woogie sure beats playing video games and getting stupider, which seems to be the trend with people our age these days. keep up the great playing!
When I was just in my teens (about 1957) I broke my arm and wrist badly. I found that a great recuperation therapy was to play boogie woogie patterns with my left hand - it really helped to strengthen my wrist. It's fun after all those years to be experimenting with this music again. It's such wonderful little art form and one which had many influences on other aspects of popular music - blues, rock etc.
This is one of my favourite Pete Johnson songs! I can't believe you can play it that fast and still be in time with each beat! :O I can imagine how hard that left hand must be to play at that speed. Well done!!
The fourth chorus in this song (counted from the very beginning. The chorus when the right hand moves up and the right pinky stretches up a bit further a few times) is a very beautiful boogie woogie chorus. Both melodic, and driving all the way, and with a nice turnaround.
I agree, that chorus is what really got me into Pete Johnson. I think this has influenced Jools Holland a long (listen to his version of Sixth Avenue Express on his latest album).
Yes. Competing with drummers (and noisy Guitarists!) is a problem! Jools Holland does play heavy and hard (well it sounds like it), so he gives them a run for their money.
I'm listening to the 1941 take with Johnson playing Death Ray Boogie, in a trio setting (bass & drums). You're playing almost identical choruses and in the same tempo. Pete would have been very proud of You, to see that his music is still living on.
You don't say! Even You can feel fatigue in your left hand?! (I remember when I started playing: it just took 30 sec left hand boogie woogie and my left forearm was totally gone...)

Footnote: This tune CANNOT be truely appreciated on ANYTHING but a true piano...some "plug-in keyboard" is merely an insult to a GREAT ARTIST.

The best rendition I have heard save for THE MAN HIMSELF....Mr. Pete Johnson.

I can tell this is awesome just by writing the comment with only 3 fingers that I'm able to use on the keyboard in the same time.

Love those right hand riffs - and how you can keep that left had going without seizing up, I really don't know.
Gerry319 5 years ago
They say..the left is like god :) It's important that you dont slow down/go faster with the left hand. Actually I dont look at my left hand..Eeco

Do you mean the chorus at 00:37??
Eeco

Exactly! The chorus starting at 00:37. I should of course had given the time. That chorus is really a little gem!

The album Swinging the blues? Thx for the tip! Found it with bittorrent. The chorus at 00.30 is clearly influenced by Pete J.
Unfortunately Jools drummer here is way to heavy-handed to drive this boogie woogie in a appetizing way...

But anyway. Top-notch!
