  • i consider each performance unique, well done

  • this is not cool

  • never seen anybody play the saltando with separate bows, i think it sounds a lot better when played spiccato

  • great music. i love cello and hayden is great. are u pakistani?

  • i am so glad to discover this video. I am a senior at Rice-Shephard and I must say I have never seen anyone play like this before. You are an amazingly talented cellist. May God bless you!

  • OMG! this kid is amazing. I have been playing learning this for nearly one year hopefully before I graduate college i can learn this.

  • hmmm... I used to play like that

    and then i turned 6

  • Almost as good as I play it. But this was 2006; he's probably much better than me now.

There were only two bad things about this performance, in my opinion:

    1. Tempo was pretty unstable. What's with the sudden tempo change at 2:11?

    2. The triplets starting from 3:42 could definitely have used a little care. Regardless of whatever bowing you choose.

Other than that, great musicality and tone colour.

  • So great! Post more videos!!

  • As a pianist, I must compliment the pianist--amazing. And as a huge fan of the cello, I must compliment the cellist--fabulous. Keep up the great work you guys!

  • I don't see how religion belongs in here. Not everybody's as religious as you are, so it's really unfair and insulting to some people if you think his talent is a GIFT from "God".

  • Great interview- you look very professional. Keep it up and soon you will be a star! What other TVs will you be on?

India needs sons like you- we are all very proud.

  • This a great music. i see you on tv - playing very good- talking very good. very proud indian taking pride in indian youth. welldone - jaye hindi

  • i know him

  • Congratulations to you, your teachers and your parents. You are an amazing cellist - I am impressed with your maturity! You have a great professional life ahead.

  • good for you

  • i recognize bonnie's influence on your nice tone. i used to study with her. she is great!

  • It is wonderful, wonderful, perfect ... FULL OF WONDER XXXXX Thank you xxxxx (((((you))))))

  • An impressive achievement for one of your age. I heard some intonation problems (high notes, chords, etc...), but that could have very well have been due to the performance atmosphere.

Good luck on your musical future!

  • great technically... i mean much better than anything i could ever do in my life but i think there are some things he could add to the piece that make it more three dimensional

  • All I gotta say is wow. I'm trying to attepmt this piece for college auditions. I don't think I can play the first three lines right. And here's this kid, four years younger than me totally pwning this piece. v.v

  • So, yeah, this kid is good, but he seems to be missing some rather important characteristics of the piece, like playing saltando in the SALTANDO part of the development. I'm working on this piece now, and to me these articulations are crucial. He obviously has the potential to do them. What gives?

  • ^^ I remember I learned this 3 years ago xD (I'm 13 now) and I'm in Juilliard too! WOOT GO JUILLIARD ^^ omg i think i failed my ear training test..ANYWAYS I think i know his teacher...not sure but I have a different teacher :P Learning Hayden D now...Cadenza is soooo hard ._. Great performenceeeee :) and how old are you now? I never saw you before in Juilliard..not even in the halls o_o You prob graduated by now right? o_O

  • whos ur teacher @ jyard?

  • He's taught under a great cellist at JULLIARD. I dont think you comprehend the type of students JULLIARD selects. Alumini? I dont know MAYBE the world's greatest musicians like Itzak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma. So before you put people down try to get your facts right becuase what you have stated is utter nonsense. NOW: A Great performance and i'm sure we will hear from this cellist in the years to come.

  • Also he is taught under a Great Cellist and at Julliard you dont get taught by musicians like Bonnie Hampton unless she thinks you have awe inspiring talent or skill. Also the world of music doesnt run that way with a prodigy not being able to be sucessful unless he has "connections". If a person has talent like this child they dont need connections because his cello playing alone, will take him far. If you still think he needs connections he does;

  • KyaaKitty dont giv advice unless it makes sense. For one thing you obviously arent a very good cellist because this child does have awe inspiring talent. He has the potential to do very well. This piece is very advanced and he plays it beautifully with much talent. From the description this child is a student at the Julliard School DOT

  • how old are you?

  • who is the accompanist?

  • Kai-wen Lui - she's actually a cellist in Bonnie's studio, getting her master's degree.

  • watch the only 2 videos in youtube of the American Composer Peter Mennin performed by Patricio Molina

  • How old is the cellist?

  • listen to Patricio Molina playing Peter Mennin

  • How old are you and Where are you from

So, It was awesome I'd like to play this music Haydn Concertino in C Major 1st Movement Greay Greay Enjoy!!

  • You should have done saltando starting 3:42. Try doing the upbow staccato

  • As he matures he can only get better

    with the right mentoring. Bravo!

  • i think you should have given credit to your accompanist in your description. But nice playing! It was pleasant to listen to. :)

although i think you could have been a bit more expressive. (i play the cello too so this isn't a comment from someone who's totally clueless)

  • I played and performed this at age 12... butttt i quit playing the cello >.< i just hated practicing 2 hours a day

  • Shaheen is undoubtedly talented! I do not agree there is lack of emotion - on the contrary! Of course, when one still has technical problems to deal with (very insignificant in his case), the expression suffers, but give him a year or two - he will be one of the big names!

  • I don't think you realize that there are some cello geniuses out there who live and breath cello. For example, I know a kid who played this when he was 12. And now he flies to Northwestern every week (from New Jersey) to take lessons from a professor there. Also, it's extremely hard to become a big name in the music world without connections and awe-inspiring skill. Don't get me wrong, this was good playing, but I wouldn't be expecting him to be a big name in one, two or even five years.

  • Wonderful! And for one so young, brilliant!

  • >.< Everyone seems to be more musically talented than I....ahh well. That's what happenes when you teach yourself Piccolo for a year in high school, then Flute currently. I suck because of it. lol

  • i think the quality of the sound sucks balls :). He is a fantastic player but the recording camera doesn't show (or lets us hear) what he is doing in the video. Stupidass technology :P.

  • Hmm. For someone who looks as young as he is, this is a good performance. I think that he needs to develope, not necessarily in age, but style, and go back and play it again. It's by no means a bad performance, I just believe that there's lack of emotion, and there are definately some tonal problems that are extremely apparentl, especially in the chords he plays. I also felt some tempi discrepancies, which should be worked out.

    That aside, well done.

  • aw yea orgasmic

  • Impressive playing!

There are places where you need to breathe in your playing. I just felt like I was holding my breath for the whole time you were playing =P.

The Cadenza is more of a solo for you to basically 'show off' your playing. Maybe you can slow it down and express more?

Also, your playing sounded rather laboured, but it could be the sound quality being affected when you uploaded the video.

  • wonderful job. you remind me when i played this in my high school three years ago. well done. :)

  • you totally rock dude! i played the same piece for my recital, wish i could play half as good. i hope my mom doesn't find this or she will on my case....she is gonna say "look at the indian boy playing so good. that's because indians work hard".

    later... peace!

  • Shaheen, this is great. You are very telented. I like your intonation and movement. I went to Juilliard as well but now I teach music in India (Pune Film Institute). I am committed to promoting Western classical music in India.

  • Thank you so very much for your kind words. Shaheen was in India this summer. Next time we visit India we would love to visit Pune Film Institute. And, if you like we can ask Shaheen to perfomr for your students.

  • That is great! I will send you a message with my telephone number in India. This boy is very very talented. He needs to proper promotion in this continent!

  • sorry but i have to tel you thats a wrong playing . the technics ar ok ... but it is not usefol without stile... your too young for Hsydns cello cello concerto you have to play first : Saint Saens, Bockerini , Bach, and Breval. Cello concertos.

And than u sould try Hsydn...

    :) nice.

  • Now that's not nice young man. Take it from someone who teaches cello for living; you both play well. Shaheen's style is very mature. I see lots of personality... i will ask my students to watch both of you and let you know what they think.

  • thankx fOr uploading this!!! wow!!! ur playing is realli good!!! how did u practice playing this song?

  • not too bad...watch the intonation on the cadenza. try not to play with so much power, its taking away from the classical feel of the piece.

  • I went back and looked at this kids intonation ... on cadenza as well. can't find any flaw. can you please expand? that will be really helpful as i teach cello and i was planning to use this performance as a showcase. classical does not equal soft. I like the power... actually that's what i liked about this piece. would love to hear more from you.

  • cellistmontreal, you must be tone-deaf.

  • Sooooooo beautiful. What a talented artist.

  • great intonation... you play with such ease. congrats!
