what a dumbfuck. Not only did you tilt the mobo while the solder was in liquid state, you touched the chip effectively FLATTENING the solder balls... I'll say it again. DumbFuck.
@chela2020 this method can fix almost all errors with the 360, but sometimes you don't need it. It could just be thermal paste seeping out from under the heatsinks. So open your xbox, clean old and apply new thermal paste. If u RROD, try heating it. O fixed mine with a hair dryer!
Well microsoft is a multi-billion doller company, And my question is if there going to be losing money on the rrod then why not just fix the fucking problem? There going to be losing alot more money when people just go out and buy a ps3 which requires no money to play online, and a way less failure % rate
@Hollowpointheroes on the contrary, people are stupid enough to buy another xbox 360 after their current one goes RRoD on them. xbox is awesome, but it's poorly assembled, with parts and ways microsoft knew would just fuck it up, so people buy more, greedy fucking bastards. they could fix that problem, obviously, but they just don't
@Hollowpointheroes they dont fix it cuz they are a bunch of jews who only care about money and they are so rich that if they dont fix it people are stupid enough to still buy it. thats y i got a PS3 never Breaks
Oh and one more thing for anyone watching, "NEVER" gun the capacitors as shown in the video. They will burn and maybe melt (if your heatgun is any good). There's no capacitor in the way of anywhere u need to heat the board. If you move the board while doing this and the solder has melted (as u want it to) u risk bridging and that wouldnt be good. Dont move the board.
Shouldn't move the board when you are gunning it, and more foil would be safer. Leave CPU, GPU, RAM, Southbridge & H/ANA exposed. 1 minute on low, then 4 minutes full blast in circles, never hold over the same area for too long. When the board cools, remove the insulation, turn it over and gun the 4 memory chips for a couple of minutes (helps with 3ROL) again in circles. Use Arctic Silver 5 paste on the GPU and CPU, transfers heat better to the heatsinks. Keeps the Xbox quiet too.
Microsoft did the RROD on purpose so they could make more profits for their techical support service dept.,and service repair dept, and xbox live should be free instead charging $100 a year just to play online.
@Busdriver580 how micrsoft loses money? people with 1yr warranty paid atleast $150 Plus shipping and handling charge to repair RROD including $299 on game console alone.Mircosoft probably spend atleast $50 parts and labor.Microsoft makes $100 profits just to repair RROD.
you do realize that Microsoft losses money everyone time someone buys an Xbox, to be fair, the money you are paying to fix it is the rest of the payment on the xbox
You don't even know what you're doing here. You don't use the gun for the whole thing! You only heat up the GPU chip, because the solder between the GPU and motherboard is what causes the problem. Heating up the CPU or any other thing is a no no.
I've done this to three xboxes, along with x clamp, and heat pads on the memory chips, second gen heat sinks, all on 2006 models, and they have worked flawlessly since, i done this about 6 months ago on all of them.
Wait a minute! im going to use this method myself!! as well as adding a better cooling system to my x-box afterwards! and the penny method! whats with the neg comments???? you rather just sit there and watch your dead x-box!!!!
I think this kid watched too many you tube videos before he made this rediculous video. hey I have an idea for you kid it is called REBALLING. all you are doing with the heat gun is providing a temporary fix you might as well just gheto fix it with new compound and screws. Besides you tilted it while you heated it so it is probably screwed up anyway.
is anything really that permanent? if it works for a year its pretty effective, besides no one has 400 dollars to shell out for a reball kit or thousands to spend on an actual machine. so go fuck yourself, mr. high-horse-i-know-everything-about-electronics-and-circuitry.
wow your mr. internet tough guy aren't you. ive searched everywhere, trust me. give me one link that provides an XBOX 360 BGA reball kit for only $30. otherwise your blowing smoke out your ass.
google Xbox 360 X Clamp Repair Kit you fucking dickhead it should come up with shopping resalts and they should all be under $30...... and if that isint enough check out ebay you fucking smart ass....
you dumbshit do you even know what reballing is? those are PACKAGES OF WASHERS AND SCREWS fuckwit. a reball kit includes flux paste, a chip stand/ball catcher, AND you need the solder balls as well. its not the x clamp fix you stupid son of a bitch. reballing is cleaning off the ACTUAL MICROCHIPS and replacing it with better solder. if you actually did some research, you would know something instead of talking shit.
Agreed, a real rework/reball station is expensive. I recently found one geared specifically towards the 360 and it was $7,000! Anyone claiming that you can find anything related to reballing at wal-mart has no clue what a BGA is. You can't even find that shit at Radioshack, let alone Best Buy.
hey idiot if you cannot afford a reball kit then your broke ass needs to keep watching these you tube videos. i was trying to help you know how to do it properly.
yea you need to make sure that you are not moving the board but even if you do it wont move that much the solder will cool really fast soo no need to worry
Best way to fix RROD is with a heat gun, and a griddle from Wal-Mart. I'm dead serious. One of the best video on how-to do this was sadly pulled from youtube.
You should NOT turn the board on end while it's hot.. good lord. I'd be surprised if that thing ever booted again.
You need to heat it carefully, the goal being to melt the solder in any section which may have cracked solder. Once it is heated, LET IT COOL for hours. Do not touch it or move it while it is being heated.
Not hot enough. Needs to be between 500-1000 Degrees F.
I used a hairdryer and it worked for a couple of days, then went capoot again. I guess if you don't mind taking the hairdryer to it every few days, it could work.
This is sad the things 360 owners do to fix this red ring crap give it 2 more years and we gone start seeing casultys (ON TODAYS NEWS: a men get burn to death tring a new experiment on a 360 fix ) LOL
ok I am a repair technician for PLAY-N-TRADE video games and after reading most of your coments...rrright. Anywho there are only three real issues here
1: Never touch the board when reflowing
2: use foil on its non reflective side if you must use foil all you are doing is creating an oven over your caps.
3!!!! NEVER REFLOW WITH YOUR HEAT SINK ATTACHED! heat spreads and the heatsink with the origional clamp can shift easily ruining your mobo.
are you retarded? yeah it will, the way the xbox gets the error is because it overheated and the micro solder connections were ruined so reheating it up in anyway will reverse that and reposition the solder
I work as a consumer electronic repair technician, and I must say, you are lucky the components didn't fall off when you were re-flowing the PCB on its side.
The 'red ring of death' is due to overheating of the processors, and is best repaired by the proper re-mounting of the heatsinks with both a high quality heatsink compound and machine screws through the PCB to hold the heatsinks firmly against the processors. You also have to overheat the unit to get it to reset after the repair.
Sorry, that's not true. If you REALLY are a tech, you'd say reflow. I reflow with a professional reflow station, it works every time. I do agree that this is a bad way to do it, with a heat gun and all, but x clamp fix is waaaay worse.
Dude.. seriously? I am RIGHT!and for anyone itching to see what this 2 cents for brains idiot wrote and deleted here,
"Only a fag (or geek squad member) gets hung up on posted comment spelling.....besides you are using a 'rework station', because they are used to rework the errors encountered with the reflow process.
I bet you are one of those EMO crybabies...cry baby cry!!!!!!
Moron, once you put a comment in reply, it is sent to the co author of that thread, which is me. I am not an "emo cry baby" either. What spelling error did I get uppity about?
You mean "X-Clamp fix" and that doesnt always work. What he's doing is a reflow which will fix an already Red Ringed system better than an x-clamp fix.
Granted, he's doing it wrong. He should PROBABLY NOT MOVE THE BOARD AS THIS MAY CAUSE COMPONENTS TO SHIFT AND CAUSE MORE PROBLEMS. Best idea is to use a professional reflow station or something like an Aoyue 968 and some sort of pre-heater. By simply heating this board (not enough to reflow) he's causing more stress on the solder points. BAD
alright, so i've done the x clamp mod, ive put the pads on the backs of the chips on the backside of the mobo, i've done the heat gun trick, and im still getting 3 red lights. if i try to check the code, nothing happens, the lights just continuously flash without hesitation. where do i go from here?
That worked twice for my buddies but I bought a heat gun now to um "seal" the deal. I mean I can't get it to work so I think the best way is a heat gun or a reflow station if your a crazy modder, then the Team Hybrid x-clamp. That sorts just about anything and everything.
Actually it works extremely well, i did this to my 360 over a year ago due to a RROD coupled with new X-clamp hardware and its still running 12 months strong!
Keeping the hair dryer over the board longer is only going to maintain the maximum temperature that the hair dryer is able to impart on the board; it will never get any hotter than that.
A hair dryer is only designed to get hot enough to speed up the evaporation of water without severely burning the user in normal use.
A heat gun is designed to heat stuff, even at temperatures that will melt solder (and cause severe burns to other people).
The idea behind a heat gun fix is that the 360 uses lead-free solder for RoHS compliance. But, the contractor hired to build these machines failed to heat the solder at the proper temperature, resulting in substandard solder joints that would eventually fail given enough expansion-contraction cycles from heating up and cooling down in normal use.
The heat gun method is supposed to heat and melt the solder, reflowing it to reestablish a good electrical connection.
However, the poster really should not have left the clampings and the heatsinks on the board; the pressure from the mountings could cause the solder BGA underneath the processors to collapse and merge into a solder puddle.
this dose not work boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
using the heatgun reflows the solder connections from the gpu to the motherboard. These connections get broken due to the heat up cool down cycle of the 360 over time causing the motherboard to flex. This breaks the solder connections on the gpu as the original x clamp microsoft put on is not strong enough to hold the gpu to the motherboard when it starts to flex. My method to fix a 360 is to heatgun and then x clamp fix.
i'm considering this for my xbox which had rrod once, now after doing the overheat trick it works for a couple of hours then crashes. the heatgun method looks like the only way to actually reflow the cpu/gpu joints properly. is the heatsink off on the cpu, can't see on your vid, although x clamp is off so i assume it was.
i didnt have 3 red lights but i wasnt getting any audio/video. just before the graphics went, i kept gettin red and green colours all over the screen. i did this trick and now it works again! thank god! hopefuly it will last a while....
ok all of you dumb fucks are retarded. for error code 0021 and 0020 reheating the southbridge chip makes the red ring go bye bye . so you guys can pretty much go fuck urselfs
let me correct the dumb fuck; the only two chips on the xbox 360 that come loose are the cpu and gpu (not the southbridge) - because microsoft tightened the xclamp to tight(so they make you buy a new one). to fix the problem at its source loosen the xclamp, and use a heat gun to reflow solder the pins
your tha dumbfuck, the x-clamp after a while starts to loose cuz microsft is cheap and doesnt wanna use the good metal and so the heat sink that the x-clamp is connected to acually helps the gpu and cpu stay in place even if it warps and sso thats why you replace it and NOT loosen it....dumb fuck.....
i'm sorry but all this crap about heating up the 360 from The Red Ring Of Death is a load of CRAP!! You need to sort it out properly using a bigger Heat-Sink Not that crappy
X-Plate that Microsoft give you and a New CPU and or GPU.
And one more thing, in this video I noticed this guy is heating the entire board on the backside of the motherboard..BAD IDEA. If you have no picture, you ONLY heat the little metal pieces surrounding the GPU chip as well as the smaller chip which is right next to the GPU chip. Make sure the heat gun's focus does NOT leave the square area where the GPU chip lies. Heat up that square area on the other side as well. But ONLY that square area. Don't spread the heat anywhere else on the motherboard.
AND no you do NOT use a hairdryer because the diameter of the heat of a hair dryer is larger than a heatgun. With a hairdryer, the heat will spread to other components surrounding the GPU chip very easily. In other words, dont use a hairdryer..
If you have no picture, THEN you use a heatgun on LOW setting and heat the GPU chip in a circular motion for 2-3 minutes. Your GPU chip must be clean!! There CANNOT be ANY thermal paste on that chip while you are heating it.
After finished heating, let it rest for 20 minutes and then apply new thermal paste and attach heatsink back on. 7 to 8 full clockwise turn of the heatsink screws should attach the heatsink on just right so you dont get any red lights.
My xbox 360 Red Ringed 3 times (months apart from eachother). The main problem is the thermal paste. When your thermal paste thins out, you have to fuly clean it off and apply new thermal paste.
Heatgun to fix your RROD will not fix your problem as it will wear out the thermal paste even more.
No. You are wrong. Your 360 gets heated up causing humidity, that humidity will cause your circuit board/ mother board to get wet. Using a blow dryer, or any other blowing object will dry off all that water, that is why the towel trick works.

This fix is for if you have no picture you fucking noobs. You can't fix your 3 red lights by heating it. Fucking dickheads do some research before you flame this dude who put this video up. Its to fix the no video issue NOT 3 red lights.
To fix the no picture issue, you NEED to heat the GPU you fucking pricks. There is absolutely no other way.
what are you shiting on about, you dont have a clue, the 3 red lights is caused by heat and it warps the board and breaks the solder contact,o you heat the board up to make them connect again and then you make additional cooling mods
wow your a fucking moron to even put this video up for people to watch 1. you don't even have the gun on 2. this will hurt more then help 3. go die in a fire tbh
How exactly did you remove everything though. I dont know how to remove the green thing that your holding (sorry about the informality) out of the cage.
After you remove the outer casing you remove the 8 small heatsink screws with a Torx 8 screwdriver. Afterwards you just remove the fan shroud, disconnect the fans and pull the motherboard (the green thing where all the components are) out. Then you take off the gpu xclamp so that you can heat that area. It might sound complicated but when done it's pretty easy.

why would someone put more heat to an xbox 360, and why would someone spend 400 dollars in a console with only like 3 good games (which happen to be FPS which is sort of faggy) I will never waste my money on a 360 and will keep playing wii until sony cuts their prices
Ya you keep playing that gay kiddy Nintendo bullshit ssj4nivek. You're good at chugging cock after all. Just the type of customer Nintendo is targeting with their Wii!
everyone has there opinions leave it at that and 360 doesn't really have any good games out now unless your a pervert (doax 2) or if your a halo fan ~ and really in my opinion wii is more fun (for now of course) and until more games come out for 360 i wont like it as much as i like game systems from sony ~ and yes i own a 360
Wii>Xbox360>PS3 Look The Wii is out selling the PS3 4 to 1 The 360 is out selling 2 to 1. Look at the stats.and honestly it also matters if you take care of your 360. I take prefect care of mine and ive had it sense it came out, and it has NEVER had any problem. My PS3 though, Will no play Blu-Ray. I payed $700 for it, and it wont play blue ray, it freezes. Then I put in RFM and it wont even turn on now.
It doesn't matter if you take care of the 360. the X-clamps will "take care" of the solder joints on your gpu and cpu sooner or later. You can't escape it, learn how to repair your systems people.
this is not abot which console is better it's about a technique to quickly fix one of them and my ps3 is ok but it doesn't have any really good games that are not for my xbox.
haha its so funny... youtube is a void for spelling errors, and morons.
comparing a Wii to an Xbox 360 is just dumb. This fix is great of you dont have a warranty. And to the guy that said "why u think pc's have liquid COOLING not heating" you should first know that most computers are cooled by fans, you dont need liquid cooling unless you running something like a quad core SLI setup.
WELL . ive got the 360 for 9 months already and i hated it i always froze and red ring of death and over heated i went 3 xbox 360's in 9 months so i got tired and both a ps3 its aswome 100X better then that shit i was so tired of my 360 i dump it and now my ps3 works asome very quit no over heating no red ring of death or even freezing good job sonny

You also have to overheat the unit to get it to reset after the repair.
teslaresearch 2 years ago

You may wanna stick to your homo coils.

I want you to be honest w/ me, did this fix your 360?
cmpunk185 2 years ago
Just use X-Clamp.
Goldsun1715 2 years ago
BAD
FluffySanchito 2 years ago
no clue man, im pretty sure its the original xbox (non hdmi) other than that, how do i find this out?

MORONS, LOOK AT THE DATE!
Xclamp fix was not yet discovered in early 2007!

alright, so i've done the x clamp mod, ive put the pads on the backs of the chips on the backside of the mobo, i've done the heat gun trick, and im still getting 3 red lights. if i try to check the code, nothing happens, the lights just continuously flash without hesitation. where do i go from here?
colthard 3 years ago
Your av cord and your power cord are probably faulty.
inferno1217 3 years ago
they work fine (i have more than one xbox)
colthard 3 years ago
soo stupid just heat the GPU
MajinCengiz 3 years ago
Yeah, then you'll fry the board and it won't work any more...good thinking, genius.
-Blayke
Klaymator14 3 years ago 4
That worked twice for my buddies but I bought a heat gun now to um "seal" the deal. I mean I can't get it to work so I think the best way is a heat gun or a reflow station if your a crazy modder, then the Team Hybrid x-clamp. That sorts just about anything and everything.
YoungGeekGuy 3 years ago
What an excelent way to make sure you'll never use that motherboard again.
FourthChannings 3 years ago
Actually it works extremely well, i did this to my 360 over a year ago due to a RROD coupled with new X-clamp hardware and its still running 12 months strong!
16GDSM 3 years ago
NEVER use a heat gun with heatsinks mounted to the board!
statusphere 3 years ago 20
what heat value do you use for this? in centigrade/celcius..? i got 0020 error.. severe failure in gpu connection. so im gonna try this method
dtodak 3 years ago
too much work! i rather buy a ps3.
shogun7907 3 years ago
umm.. you shouldnt heat the caps up ... and you can use a blow dryer if it gets up to 900Degree f.... (they dont make one that hot )
ertgunner 3 years ago 2
Can you use a blow dryer?
xxthanh89xx 3 years ago
It wouldn't get hot enough.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
(Watcher3223) even if you held it over it for a longer time it still wouldnt get hot enough?
Millentree10 3 years ago
Yes, it still wouldn't get hot enough.
Watcher3223 3 years ago
lol heat up the xbox witch was what killed it in the first place not very smart
adriannunez99 3 years ago
Not necessarily.
Watcher3223 3 years ago 3
However, the poster really should not have left the clampings and the heatsinks on the board; the pressure from the mountings could cause the solder BGA underneath the processors to collapse and merge into a solder puddle.
Watcher3223 3 years ago 3
Dude it works trust me... google heat gun ana chip xbox 360
kieran4862 3 years ago
this dose not work boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
midgetninja13843 3 years ago
well you obviously didnt do it rite coz it does work you have to make sure u melt the solder
kieran4862 3 years ago
cant i jus use my mums hair dryer then?
hhs786 3 years ago
lol
kieran4862 3 years ago
using the heatgun reflows the solder connections from the gpu to the motherboard. These connections get broken due to the heat up cool down cycle of the 360 over time causing the motherboard to flex. This breaks the solder connections on the gpu as the original x clamp microsoft put on is not strong enough to hold the gpu to the motherboard when it starts to flex. My method to fix a 360 is to heatgun and then x clamp fix.
adampres2005 3 years ago
i'm considering this for my xbox which had rrod once, now after doing the overheat trick it works for a couple of hours then crashes. the heatgun method looks like the only way to actually reflow the cpu/gpu joints properly. is the heatsink off on the cpu, can't see on your vid, although x clamp is off so i assume it was.
cilitpop 3 years ago
will this not just melt the thing
the red rings are caused by over heating arent they??
so this is lyk adding more heat ???
daveoshame 3 years ago
isnt that a hair dryer?
radomjake 3 years ago
No. It is a heat gun, which is similar to a hair drier, but then again it is different.
Dmoney3788 3 years ago
if you used that as a hair dryer it would singe your hair; and could also roast a chicken

i didnt have 3 red lights but i wasnt getting any audio/video. just before the graphics went, i kept gettin red and green colours all over the screen. i did this trick and now it works again! thank god! hopefuly it will last a while....

i have the same prob was ther any other way

umm people this does work;(Reflow soldering) its where points on the GPU/CPU have worked loose -- or a temperature problem causing the same result.
please stop calling people dumb fucks, cause this guy just fixed his xbox 360 for free; and well most of you "DUMB FUCKS" are paying to have it fixed
battlecarrysabot 3 years ago
ok all of you dumb fucks are retarded. for error code 0021 and 0020 reheating the southbridge chip makes the red ring go bye bye . so you guys can pretty much go fuck urselfs
stumpx2 3 years ago
ok all of you dumb fucks are retarded? ok ?
let me correct the dumb fuck; the only two chips on the xbox 360 that come loose are the cpu and gpu (not the southbridge) - because microsoft tightened the xclamp to tight(so they make you buy a new one). to fix the problem at its source loosen the xclamp, and use a heat gun to reflow solder the pins
battlecarrysabot 3 years ago
your tha dumbfuck, the x-clamp after a while starts to loose cuz microsft is cheap and doesnt wanna use the good metal and so the heat sink that the x-clamp is connected to acually helps the gpu and cpu stay in place even if it warps and sso thats why you replace it and NOT loosen it....dumb fuck.....

150peacemaker 3 years ago 3
And one more thing, in this video I noticed this guy is heating the entire board on the backside of the motherboard..BAD IDEA. If you have no picture, you ONLY heat the little metal pieces surrounding the GPU chip as well as the smaller chip which is right next to the GPU chip. Make sure the heat gun's focus does NOT leave the square area where the GPU chip lies. Heat up that square area on the other side as well. But ONLY that square area. Don't spread the heat anywhere else on the motherboard.
timechange01 3 years ago 2
AND no you do NOT use a hairdryer because the diameter of the heat of a hair dryer is larger than a heatgun. With a hairdryer, the heat will spread to other components surrounding the GPU chip very easily. In other words, dont use a hairdryer..
timechange01 3 years ago 2
If you have no picture, THEN you use a heatgun on LOW setting and heat the GPU chip in a circular motion for 2-3 minutes. Your GPU chip must be clean!! There CANNOT be ANY thermal paste on that chip while you are heating it.
After finished heating, let it rest for 20 minutes and then apply new thermal paste and attach heatsink back on. 7 to 8 full clockwise turn of the heatsink screws should attach the heatsink on just right so you dont get any red lights.
timechange01 3 years ago 2
My xbox 360 Red Ringed 3 times (months apart from eachother). The main problem is the thermal paste. When your thermal paste thins out, you have to fuly clean it off and apply new thermal paste.
Heatgun to fix your RROD will not fix your problem as it will wear out the thermal paste even more.
timechange01 3 years ago
in other words a hair dryer

browns law idiots!HEAT IS THE ENEMY THE HEAT IS WHY YOU GOT THE 3 RINGS IN THE FIRST PLACE!DER DER DER
w1zardf1ngers 3 years ago
No. You are wrong. Your 360 gets heated up causing humidity, that humidity will cause your circuit board/ mother board to get wet. Using a blow dryer, or any other blowing object will dry off all that water, that is why the towel trick works.

What temperature settings were you using mate?

This fix is for if you have no picture you fucking noobs. You can't fix your 3 red lights by heating it. Fucking dickheads do some research before you flame this dude who put this video up. Its to fix the no video issue NOT 3 red lights.
To fix the no picture issue, you NEED to heat the GPU you fucking pricks. There is absolutely no other way.

How exactly did you remove everything though. I dont know how to remove the green thing that your holding (sorry about the informality) out of the cage.
xTuNice 4 years ago

LuvAddictStudio 4 years ago
It doesn't matter if you take care of the 360. the X-clamps will "take care" of the solder joints on your gpu and cpu sooner or later. You can't escape it, learn how to repair your systems people.
ComradeGort 4 years ago
this is not abot which console is better it's about a technique to quickly fix one of them and my ps3 is ok but it doesn't have any really good games that are not for my xbox.

It's funny really, I've had my 360 for about a year. I play it regularly and it hasn't given me any errors yet.

comparing a Wii to an Xbox 360 is just dumb.
