  • In an interview, Madeline Kahn has said that she did not like the song and felt like an idiot, because the text was so silly. But she also said that it was one of the highlights of the evening.

  • We need a Madeline Kahn biography.

  • i love that she can make little gestures or facial expressions and it still be amazing!

  • LOVE Madeline Kahn. Bless her heart. RIP. She was able to be so fazeless-ly dry and funny...unlike anyone. If you like this, you might try finding Ute Lemper doing the Berlin Cabaret songs...

  • Madeline Khan... What a jewel she was! God Bless You!

  • Madeline Khan was a great talent.

  • Maddy was one of the cutest and funniest gals around......not around anymore, bless her soul.

  • Madeline was a great actress and a fantastic commediane.

  • Thanks again for posting this. I have viewed it many, many times and never get tired of it. what a gem. Madeline is the best!

  • I am guessing that the inspiration for Sondheim's "Can That Boy Foxtrot" came from this early Berlin gem.

  • She made us laugh. Was a wonderful entertainer. Missed very much.

  • I started singing this at work, and the baby I was holding looked at me and smiled! I know I didn't sing it as fab as Madeline did, but a song that Madeline sang made her smile!

    R.I.P Madeline xx

  • @19cal88 My husband John is extremely shy. This one made me laugh so hard. My John is quite a gentleman.

  • She lost the Oscar to...Tatum O'Neal! What a travesty! The Oscars are such a crock.

  • I think I may well have been in love with her. When she passed I was truly heart-broken. Talented in so many ways, great singer, actress, and oh, so funny, not to mention so beautiful. Possibly the perfect woman.

  • I LOOOOOOOOVE MADELINE KAHN! She makes this little ditty sophisticated SND hilarious! Thanks for sharing this!!!!!!

  • My mother was on the stump the band segment of this episode. :|

  • Thank you for sharing this. I never forgot seeing this on TV, more than 20 years ago (time flies). I've been searching for this. Wonderfull!

  • Her voice, her voice.

I just loved Madeleine's voice, very captivating, seductive and sexy. And yes, she was classy all the way.

  • Oh WOW! I have never seen that before. It was smashing..... (ahh... gone too soon.)

  • wonderful video. wondering if anyone has any videos of her in "on the 20th century" or her tour with "hello dolly". so sad i missed seeing her live.

  • I think my favorite moment is the split second before the clip ends when Madeline goes from looking her character to getting this mischievous glint in her eyes and how she smiles. That just tells me how much she loved performing and how much fun she had with this song

  • Absolutely brilliant. The funniest and most beautiful singer ever.

  • Her voice had an odd haunting quality. Loved her. My memories of her are from sesame street haha Was a fan from an early age after her grover "echo" bit.

  • Her Royal Majesty K A H N !!!

  • Pure genius!

  • brava!

  • She's still so sexy and flat out funny. Class act... the real thing.

  • Mel Brooks is on record as saying, "Either as an actress or stand-up comedienne you cannot beat Madeline Khan". When you watch her doing anything you have to agree that he was dead right. Her dazzlingly brilliant talent is sadly missed!.

  • How can FIVE people not like this??? Inconceivable!

  • @filmjedi - I really wander?!?!??! what not to like?! she is goddess!!!

  • Does anyone know if Irving Berlin himself was present at this event? I'm not sure what health he was in at the time, but I don't recall reading/hearing about him having any particular illness or being in bad shape when he was 100. If he was bedridden or anything, it wasn't publicised that I know of.

  • I wish I could find her singing "Ain't got a home"

  • almost ever other day a new girl will say....he isn't much in the light but when he gets in the dark, you'd be suprised...lol <3 u Madeline

  • Her delivery and her facial expressions are precious.

  • I wish I could a clip of Kahn singing "The Moment Is Passed" on Carson. It's a hilarious operatic tune, and she sang it brilliantly. I've never forgotten the performance. Anyone else remember it?

  • @LoudCitizen I had posted a clip of that performance, but it got taken down years ago. Sorry.

  • @LoudCitizen It has been re-uploaded by someone, actually! It is a treat :)

  • Sounds like my fiancee John. He's rather shy. LOL. He's really a sweet gentleman.

  • Always loved her! Strange, but she reminds me of Bernadette Peters in this clip! Joe Scibetta

  • Love her!!!!

  • Everyone who met, or knew Madeline Kahn had nothing but good to say about her. She was a beautiful lady, inside and out.

  • RIP Ms Kahn...the stars dimmed alittle when you died...

  • @angeloflove don't you mean they brightened? new star, up there...

  • Comment removed

  • I envy anyone who knew her, or met her in person. What a lovely girl.

  • What a doll!

  • She and Gilda Radner can make any scene/act appear so goddamn effortless !! Truly a mark of genius ....

  • wow,i loved her since young frankenstein/blazing saddles! lily von schtp

  • Sighhhhh....WHY ain't there more dames like Madeline Kahn?!

  • i like this version better than MMs and the others..

  • I loved her in PAPER MOON when she told Addie Pray that she had good bone structure. That she was going to buy her a brassiere and cosmetics and take her to see Mickey The mouse. lol

  • GODDAMN beautiful, awesome, talented woman! Miss her!

  • Great song and perfect for Madeline Kahn.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! I saw it about 25 years ago as a kid and have thought about it often.

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I saw it as a kid about 25 years ago and have long told all my theatre- and Madeline-loving friends about it.

  • Life really isn't fair to her...or to those of us who adored her!

  • Madeline had such a sense of timing......and what a set of pipes! WOW!

  • i want that dress

  • This was recorded two days before I was born... Damnit

  • This is what it looks like when genius and talent meet peacefully. Using graceful but minimal gestures, Madeline Kahn doesn't have to destroy the little song to show how funny and sexy it is.

  • How is she miked I wonder? I'd love to see her first musical performance on SNL!!!

  • LMAO I Love Madeline Kahn

  • wow. making it look easy. gonna go watch it again (and again)

  • Wow, didn't know she could sing so well!

  • @AlyzabethMitchell You've gottta watch the shy quiet ones. My fiance John all over.

  • THIS WOMAN WAS A GENIUS. PERIOD.

  • She is so adorable in this performance!

  • I loved her!

  • She passed away? Anyway, I love this song. I love dirty songs and I love the expression when she sings this one.

    LOL

  • She had a wonderful voice and she was a very funny actress.

  • shes cute!

  • Beautiful, funny, sexy, a great singer, and did I mention beautiful, funny, and sexy.

    There's no one like her.

  • Simply brilliant!!! Love her with Gene, love her with Gilda... love to watch her clips... and miss her as if I'd known her. Love you Madeline!!!

  • Oh my goodness!!!Thank you sooo much for sharing this. Madeline Khan was simply brilliant. I miss her talent. Thank you so much!

  • There are some people who you just want to hear laugh and sing and speak, and you are in complete heaven...

...for me it's Maggie Smith & Madeline Kahn...

    We miss Madeline very much...

  • LOL....

  • Such a treat to find this here. I had a casual encounter with her once and she was like a just-opened bottle of champagne, which is exactly how she sings this song. Someday people will realize she was as brilliant a comedienne as Lucy and Carol Burnett -- and I think beautiful too. She was taken too soon, but her legacy lives on through her movies and YouTube. Thanks for posting.

  • I just can't stop watching this! She is so good!

She really knew how to sell a song!!!

  • First Class performance from a first-class woman, Madeline Kahn! I bet she dug this song out of the Irving Berlin catalogue herself. What a great comedian and so sorely missed by her fans. If there is a heaven, she's in it!

  • @Varlet09 Miss her so much.

  • Anyone know where I can get sheet music for this?

  • @SwingSiren

    just google it---it's there!!

  • Opera's loss was musical comedy's gain. RIP, classy lady.

  • SHE SO SEXYYYYYYY!!!!

  • A genius!!!

  • Hello. I like this video. But, could you upload the Irving Berlin's 100th Birthday Celebration, please? I wait your answer. Thanks my friend.

  • She looks alot like Bernadette Peters here. Or Bernadette Peters looks alot like her.

  • One of the loveliest and most talented women to ever grace the stage.

  • she's so good. i love her hand move at 2:48-2:50.

  • we love you Madeline Khan we miss you and your classy humor

  • i loved her.. she was the best. !!! she was so funny is alot of movies really.. why did she leave us so early..not cool..!!

  • What a great talent she was !

  • Nothing Madeline Kahn sang or acted should surprise us. Her appeal to us only grows now that she's gone. She surely must make heaven glow.

  • 10th anniversary of her death this December, she was taken far too young.A pure genius performer sadly missed fondly remembered

  • Love you Madeline! happy 67th birthday! :D

  • Happy Birthday Madeline Kahn! Sept 29;)

  • She is a Gem...love you, dear Dear Lady!

  • She was a truly amazing talent. This number show's what comic timing is all about. A beautiful woman and acrtress. Wish she was still with us creating her special kind of magic. Loved her.

  • She was such a wonderful actress and singer! Why must some people be taken from us so soon it doesn't seem fair.

If you have any more video's of Madeline will you plz post them, she's such a funny woman.

    cheers for the upload!

    RIP Madeline Kahn

  • Ah Madeline Khan. What a funny, beautiful woman. Why do people like her and Gilda Radner have to leave us so early? She was brilliant.

  • I watched this show (Irving's 100th Anneversary) in Tokyo Japan - yes, this was aired in Japan too almost 20 years ago! I have been linging for this to be DVDed, still no luck yet. The final scene, God Bless America, I still remember how it was like...anyone generous, please upload the all others songs from this programme to share?

  • This was absolutely charming! I miss Madeline! I loved her ever since I saw her as Eunice Burns in "What's Up, Doc?"

  • I'm amazed. She's unique.

  • her speaking voice is mezmerising along with her singng voice

  • They don't make em like Madeline Kahn anymore! They just don't

  • I agree. She was one of a kind.

  • @ugotitbabe000 *cough* Kristin Chenoweth *cough*

  • @TheBohemianTenor LOL Not even close. The sense of comedic, natural timing and originality leaves Chenoweth under the bed where she sings Popular from. lol I like Kristin, though...of course. Cute as a button.

  • @ugotitbabe000 I agree. A very special lady. Irreplaceable.

  • Ah, Madeline. :)

    Classic.

  • Madeline had operatic training but her wonderful appeal went way beyond her singing (even in "I"m Tired" in Blazing Saddles.) Her comic timing and acting could break the ice with any audience, on the Broadway stage, e.g.. in Sondheim's "Follies" or on the screen. She was one of a kind-- who will never be forgotten.

  • I miss her so much!!

    Young Frankenstein....

    History of the World....

    Clue.....

  • no it's not a funny song, but she was great at singing, acting and being a funny lady, wow she had great talent

  • The song is cute, and it does have it's charm and humor. But I think only a performer with the timing and comedic genius of Madeline Khan could bring it out.

  • LOL,she looks so cute here!

  • I saw this 20 years ago, and never forgot it. It's good to know I'm not the only one. iTunes has a pretty good version by Kate Michaels. Not this good, of course....

  • I saw this when it aired in 1988 too. My mother and I couldn stop laughing.

  • I had the honor of waiting on the late Ms. Kahn when I was a cashier @ the Drama Bookshop NYC in the late '80's. She was barely over 5' tall, wearing a snazzy all-peach jacket&pants ensemble & was the nicest, most unprepossessing, patient and Utterly NO ATTITUDE celeb that ever graced the precincts of that storied dump of a bookstore. And she looked even more fab in person, too, I was so sad when I learned that she had died. She was the nicest celeb that *ever* entered that store.

  • @auteuricon

What a lovely, well written tribute to a rare, timeless talent. Thank you for your evocative recollection of this brief encouter.

  • I miss her too.

  • We miss you Maddie......

  • I was going to say the same thing. Madeline Kahn was such a talented woman.

  • you're right....

  • I love her everything she sings and says is just so amazing. By far the most talented woman I have ever had the pleasure of seeing perform.

  • I so remember watching this on TV when I was younger!

  • A comedienne par excellence and a great singer too! We miss you Madeline!!

  • Madeline could sing anything and with a knckout punch, even this Berlin chestnut .

  • Oh my god--if I were smiling any harder, it's possible that I'd pass out or my jaw would fall off. She is SO amazing! And this song is HILARIOUS!!! I LOVE HER!!!

  • Truly one of the greats.

  • She never ever fails to make me smile. :}

  • I can't believe she's been gone for nearly 10 years. : (

  • Sometime on the old Carson Tonight Show Madeline sang about FEET, a very funny song, not unlike this one, and a hit with the audience.

    Has anyone else seen it?

  • Aye! I remember that! It was always one of my favorites. She preformed it on the muppet show too.

  • Having played this a number of times, I'm reminded of another talent lost all too early in her career. Judy Holliday. Madeline's sense of timing in comedy was unparalled and brilliant.

  • <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Sorry, when I said "It's cases like these" I don't mean people dying in 1999, I mean publicised people whom are suffering from Cancer and are too, just like every other human being. Just thought I say that before there were any misconceptions.

  • God Madeleine Kahn was so funny, and so gorgeous in a funny way. What a shame that she died due to Cancer, but what really has me, is that she died on the third of December, 1999. I know she couldn't help it, but honostly, how cruel can a disease be that it would kill her right at the end of the year, decade, century and millenium???

It's cases like these that miraculously help to aid and support others whom are suffering from the thing, cancer.

  • This is an audition song waiting to happen!

  • I remember seeing this when it was on PBS. I wonder if Fannie Brice ever sang this song. It would have been perfect for Her but Madelyn did such a great job. She's surely missed.

  • Never knew the movies, but her singing is without parallel. "You'd Be Surprised" is an unforgettable rendition of Berlin's brilliance. I love Madeline Kahn.

  • "Hello. I'm Madeline Kahn" aka Madeline Wolfman aka pure talent and musical genius!!

  • LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVELOVEx10^65456764323

  • she would be 46 here! who would have thought at this time that this great delight and wonderful entertainer would be died in only 11 years! the greatest shame!

  • ok madeline kahn fans!!!

stop the video at 3:20! and tell me she doesn't look like reese witherspoon when she smiles like that! of course mk is a much better comedian and singer but they do look alike!!!

  • she is a genuine delight. i've always loved her.

  • Thank you a millionfold. Madeline was a unique

and exceptional singer and actress. As you now, she died of ovarian cancer several years ago. I miss her a lot.

    Kestal

  • i always thought she had a great voice, but only saw her in comedies.

  • A wonderful, rare song performed by an incredible lady!!!

  • Thanks for posting this great video, do you have any other performances from that Irving Berlin TV Special?

  • I probably did at one time, but I've only saved this performance.

  • That's a shame...I remember there was also a great performance by Nell Carter of "Alexander's Ragtime Band."

  • Truely great performer! We miss her. It almost seems like Irving Berlin wrote this song for Madeline, with her Comic Talent & Voice, it's a perfect match.
