  • Can't get it to work. I have a simplex frequency on the right and our 440 repeater on the left. I transmit with my ht and it transmits to the simplex channel but I hear it coming out of my external speaker and its not getting to the repeater side. Any help would be great. SEE display PIC. Thanks Ron

  • can you put 50 watt?insted of low pover? tankyou....

  • Pretty cool! Just ordered a TM-V71A myself, super excited to get it!

  • cigarjohn, i have both radios. i would rather have two kenwoods.

i have the 8900r in my vehicle. the 6 meter and 10 meter are useless as who uses 6 meter or 10 meter fm. noboby! get the kenwood or get two. i keep it in the shack.

actually i purchased the "RC-D710" head for only 99 bucks and now it is a kenwood d710. get the kenwood. please you will thank me for many years, get the kenwood.

  • Thanks for the info. Good video demonstration. I'm looking to purchase my first mobile 2m/70cm radio to use as a base station for my newly purchased Arrow Antenna Dual Band JPole. I was looking at this radio and the Yaesu 7900m/8800R. Can't make up my mind. eham.com rates these radios very good. Any advice on my selections?

  • i use my old tm733 for crossband good feature, its a good idea to engage time out timer(tot) so in heavy traffic it shuts off then re starts also you can activate remote use so using dtmf you have external control when out,i have to remove mike though as it will pick up noise in room and ends up sounding terrible

  • @ jams:

  • can you use this radio in the cross band mode to link a 70cm repeater and a 2m repeater together?

i know it's cool to use in a simplex/repeater function but if needed could you link machines?

  • can you use the CT or DSC in "Crossband Mode" ? I have the same Kenwood, but it is`nt working.

  • CQ 2m....haha

  • hey can i use it jsut like a repeater and put on side on 145.490 and have the other side 144.890 and make a repeater out of that

  • @cleosimble

No, it is cross band repeat only. "In band" repeaters require large band pass and/or notch filters. Otherwise the transmitter will overload the receiver. Google "repeater duplexer" to see see how large they are for a 2m repeater and you will see why a small mobile radio cannot function as an in band repeater. However the cross band repeat function is really cool and can serve as a powerful tool in emergency communications.

  • update: i got the "RC-D710"

check it out. it turns this radio into the TM-D710

i got mine for 99 bucks from HRO in Denver!

  • Bought my V71 almost a year ago and I absolutely love it. I plan on buying a second one soon. This is an excellent radio using an older style look about it from years ago when radio's were simpler to use. Although this model still uses menu's, once you affiliate yourself with this radio's operation it's very easy to use. Excellent cross band repeat operation too, which I use every single day :)

  • Just modded mine to the K spec had an E version can't find out hot to turn the low tx down to milliwatts any ideas as five watts is too much for what I want!

  • You need a dual band antenna one that will work on two frequencies COMET are my preference but I am in the Uk a good radio shop will point you in the right direction

  • what kind of antenna do you need to cross band repeat.

  • @jargenlink i just use the arrow jpole. cheap and hurricane proof! they have a 2m/440mhz version.

  • Nice Video..I am trying to decide which one I want to buy next. I do like this radio. Do you need a duplexer for the V71? Check out all my videos..look me up on youtube N3CDX

  • good video,I am planning to buy a v71 or d710,not sure which is better, did you collect many 5cents for all these hits lol 73 from a ve1

  • hello, i recently bought new the "Kenwood RC-D710" faceplate for 99 bucks at HRO in Denver. It turns the v71 into the d710. LOVE IT! good luck. recently got the cables for the rig also. highly recommend those also!

  • 99 bucks is pretty much better than the 369 i seen on another url in here somewhere ie hamcity orin ohio..thanks get back

  • to "bluerollincoal",

i can hit squaw mtn from loveland. i do listen to the 145.115. i have heard many other hams in parker checking into the fort collins machine with a base antenna. good luck on your ticket and do holler up for me on the 145.115 as soon as you get your ticket!

    ham it up! peace

  • Very nice demo. I am about a little over a week from getting my ticket and this will be my base radio as well. I have the same situation that a HT can't hit Squaw Mountain or Conifer Mountain just west of Denver from east Parker. Maybe with a bit of luck and a bit of power I could hit the 145.115 from here as I can see the mountain the repeater is on from my roof.

  • with your antenna on your roof you should be able to hit ALL repeaters up and down the front range.

i can hit all the denver area repeaters from way up here on just 5 watts! (base and mobile) get your antenna up on your roof and you will be very happy!

  • Thanks for the video. Nice to be able to relay the repeater that way and have a strong signal locally.

  • Hi,

I just purchased a tm-v71, and i notice that the s-meter is always showing less signal than my other radios. Did you notice the same on your rig ?

  • not sure why acetech82's is locking up.

radioguy100, heck no.......it sure is fun though.

i made this video when i lived up in the mountains.

to far for my ht to make it to the repeaters but good for my 50 watt mobile in the shack. so when i want to run around our property and still chat with the guys, i put it on crossband and can keep in the qso with low power on my ht from far away.

  • do you always have to crossband in ham radio repeaters?

  • @radioguy100 negative, it sure is fun though

  • do you know how to make it not lock up when a net is running? I have the same radio, and it will lock up during a net or heavy traffic.

  • @acetech82 you are not supose to use two different repeaters. one freq is simplex and the other is the repeater. lots of people learn that quick. did you figure it out?

  • @hamradiofreq yeah, i know one is simplex and the other is a repeater. problem I have is the Kenwood will go in to a lock mode and stop transmitting during heavy traffic on a repeater.

  • cool...
