  • the ancient way is that if you get called to become a shaman, you have to spend a long time learning from the Familiar Spirit and only healing in your own family helping the more experienced elder, even 30 years, and then you can go out and heal anyone in your village

  • I like the part about pandas.

  • This song broke my brain.

  • I became autistic after this song.

  • This is how Yoko Ono should have sound.

  • My friend wrote a paper about this song for Sophomore English class... We had to analyze the rhyming scheme... Good times.

  • @MrSuednym And how did that work out?

  • @RandomActsofNERD The teacher laughed.

  • ?????????????????????????????????

  • I love how try hard the drummer is.

  • @W1tchcraft what do you mean hes try hard? hes not really doing anything that requires extreme focus. hes just having fun and rocking out. you must be a frustrated musician if you think hes trying hard :)

  • i looked this band up cuase the slits

  • Weird!! The thought that anyone could find this to be anything less than completely awesome and amazing had literally never crossed my mind before I read these comments. Weird!!

  • Atonal dissonance....I think we'd all to do better to just listen to "you drink a lot of coffee for a teenager" , now there's your math rock. I dunno, I can understand it from the sense that the word Mu means mother, and sic means science... Mu-sic is the mother of science, therefore this song is good. Other than that... don cab swallows easier on the first listen. Yeah, I could like this,... after I listened to it for a while....

  • i lold so hard at this video

  • @rock :) same here

  • I don't like this neither. And believe me, I listen to some "weird" but good shit. This to me, is just plain bad Math Rock.

  • I don't like this.

  • Just go see them live and you understand why so many people like them.

  • it took 9 minutes and 4 tokes of weed to write this song

  • @iceguy0077 Seriously! LMFAO

  • I get that the song is suppose to be sloppy, but maybe they could play it just a little less shitty?

  • I'm sorry... I DONT GET IT. someone explain what the hype is about? I like the drummer's enthusiasm, but that's the only thing i can pick out that's special. Sorry.

  • Can somone post the lyrics for this? im having an hard time figuring them out

  • the sound of the gibson SG really comes to it's right here

  • I woke up this morning with a really bad hangover, and my penis was missing again

  • @whalesauce13 dude i found yer peanus it was in that big plastic bowl of cannoli left over from the jello shots beer ping pong festival in the garage last night

  • a lot of stupid comments in here, so deerhoof must be doing something right then! I love their music, it's crazy fun and silly at times what is so wrong with that? Why does that bother insecure people, idk..

  • Its like their doing everything they can to fight a groove. Anti-groove. I like it.

  • i like the way the drummer plays, looks like he's putting his heart and soul into playing those drums

  • I don't know why I like this shit, but I do. so I listen to it.

  • who ever said music was ment to said any specific way? If you like it, you like it. If not, fuck off.

  • cant wait for NXNE

  • At about 1:15, it looks like the drummer is smashing the cymbal with his head. I like his style, though, he's pretty tight on the kit.

    "Pan-da, pan-da, pan-da, pan...China!"

It's a pretty cute little song, I have to admit.

  • This is one of Dave Grohl's favorite bands?

  • check it out, The Roots totally stole this: youtube v=sy3duJGz2gA also, for anyone out there wanting to learn how to listen to Deerhoof, you want to keep your ears open for the tension. The Tension people! THE TENSION! (and the groove hidden within)

  • @bloodpollen

it's very similar but not stolen. also, i don't really think deerhoof is 'difficult' music, except for their first album maybe. i think people are more biased towards the textures/timbres than the rhythm, which is understandable. either way, deerhoof are all about the music, not so much about the image.

  • panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda

  • Man this is the greatest music i've ever heard. I'm gonna listen to this when i'm at the gym and possibly make a music video out of it, with my favorite game, Braid.

  • Wow, what shit.

Give me those instruments so I can sell them.

  • Hipster trash fuck cunt

  • She's using her foot as a metronome @ 2:40

  • All this stuff you don't understand, it's what we thrive on. We don't understand it either, but that's why we love it. If you don't get it you don't get it, no problem. Just don't be hatin'.

  • @BraveNewHipster : Coming from a guy named BraveNewHipster.

  • @pnserious : My name is supposed to be ironic, obviously. =D

  • this band is a musical joke.

  • This band sucks so much.

  • Gotta love pandas.

  • panda ,,, i like,,,love them ,, bye bye

  • They remind me of bands Melt Banana and Polysics meshed together with a little bebop jazz thrown in. I absolutely love it! ♥ ^_^

  • Greg is such an insane drummer

  • I like the bit where he says panda.

  • To like it or not depends on loving dadaism or not.

  • @ngingango I disagree. They are genius with their organic pushes and pulls in the music and rhythmically it is amazing to perform this piece in so many different ways. Dadaism is the glorification of non-art or being ridiculous just to be insane. They are way more put together than that. I love 'em but they are intentional and not trying to pick at what art really is. There music works.

  • 62 people don't like pandas

  • i'm so glad i just got into this band because they rock

  • 62 people just don't understand Deerhoof because they're so underground.

  • so far this is the only song or track ive heard/seen by deerhoof, im impressed and im not usually into this type of music. i love metal. however, it is apparent to me that these people truly enjoy what they do.

  • so far this is the only song or track ive heard/seen by deerhoof, im impressed and im not usually into this type of music. i love metal. however, it is apparent to me that these people truly enjoy what they do.

  • Anybody heard of The Mothers of Invention? If not look them up, they were doing this kind of thing in the 60's but there is plenty of room for it now too.

  • @canturgan Zappa was ahead of everything. *shrug*

  • This is our drinking game. Whenever you hear "panda" you have to drink, weve never got to the end =p

  • Awful...and not because these simians can't be compared to other bands...not because their music really can't be classified in "standard" or "genre-confined" "bourgeois" boxes..........truly, not because of one thing except pure talentless and anti-artistic awfulness...Indeed, by nearly any standard.....awful

  • 素晴らしい!Gotta love syncopation! Might see them live tomorrow night at GAMH.

  • It seems like jazz-rock :P

  • That is one heck of a composition. Are they quite bohemian and arty about their work or is this just what they like playing?

  • Anyone have a lyrics sheet?

  • @KlajjDarquen here it is PANDA!

  • Reminds me of Captain Beefheart

  • I haven't seen them live yet. I feel like a virgin

  • Is that John Norris playing the drums?

  • this is why people don't like indie music.

  • Thought most of it was retarded , enjoyed last thirty seconds

  • Is it just me, or is this band retarded? She just repeats the word 'panda' the entire fucking song. Cut the crap, this is by no means good music. It takes no musical talent or creativity to shit out something of this caliber.

  • @rockinassassin I looked this up because of Questionable Content Comics. I'm so glad I did!! This is awesome!!

  • thisreminds of war craft the panda

    dude i bring pandamonea

i just thought of it for some

    reason.

  • i think the guy that was playing the

drums was drunk.at the end he

    cooled down.

  • That's kind of adorable XD

  • lady likes pandas

  • i actually lol'ed when i first watched this. panda panda panda panda pan panda!

  • FOR PANDORIAAAA!

  • @doublesguy I dunno man. I mean, I don't care if the lead singer's a girl, or if I can relate to it or not. But the whole out of rhythm thing really killed it for me. I mean, I'm not saying they suck, they're obviously good at what *they* do. Just not what some people like, I guess.

  • This has to be one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • they suck...bad

  • saw these guys in concert... it was full of awesomeness

  • I love the ideas that Greg is coming up with on kit. I do wish his technique was better than it is, but the ideas are awesome. He is a weird mixture as a drummer of someone who is more talented in how he thinks about music, his groove execution, and visual performance, versus his actual stroke.

  • @lemures111 i think he has incredible technique

  • fail

  • Talk about minimal lyrics ... great band that makes more with less.

  • Perfect music to listen to when you simply want to enjoy music for music's sake. Just wonderful.

  • The Drummer Is Amazing!!

  • Panda panda panda, panda pan, PANDAH.

  • I feel sorry for the people that can't enjoy Deerhoof because they're too busy comparing them to other bands. Everyone has a notion of what a "good" band should sound like, but some people can't ever stop looking through that window, which means they end up missing a lot of good music. "Oh, they're out of rhythm? they suck. The lead singer is a female, but she doesn't sing loud or sexy? They suck. I can't use their song to describe a cause I support or a moment in my life? they suck". Too bad.

  • @doublesguy this is what i try to tell people all the fucking time. lol

  • @G33TarDed Hopefully you'll get lucky one day and get through to someone, haha.

  • @doublesguy at least for me, music that is performed or put out to the public has to have at least a little bit of relatablility to it. If you wanna perform for people, you have to at least spent a teeny bit of time to consider what people would like to hear.

  • @noneoftheosrt Okay, I hate the character limit. What I'm trying to say is that there will always be two people who have a total opposite opinion of the same band. Not because of what the band does, but because of what the people hear. Eventually, people start closing themselves off from music that sounds different than from what they normally listen to, never bothering with different sounds. You don't HAVE to like strange bands, but you should at least give them a chance.

  • @doublesguy I would really love to understand Deerhoof but for now I just don't, especially when fans ostracise non-fans by saying things like "you just don't get it.", and especially when the same kind of people consider "good music" to be anything that sounds dissonant, regardless if it is badly played or not. I'm not saying Deerhoof does this, but it kind of gives many indie bands a veil to mask lack of talent behind.

  • @noneoftheosrt Also, how would you define talent? I'll answer that for you, you define it differently from everybody else. Take an example, if you will. Herman Li, guitar player for Dragonforce. He is, in my opinion, one of the worst guitar players I've ever heard. But there's thousands of people who swear he's the greatest. And I love Daniel Johnston. But to many other people he's just a guy with a piano that sings badly.

  • @noneoftheosrt Probably right; But my good mate, Music doesn't need a definition, nor a label of good/bad. True music is simply, Music! No reason to feel it, Music is the feeling itself.

  • @noneoftheosrt you, sir, are my new favorite person

  • @noneoftheosrt Yeah, indie fans can be idiots that way. Do what I do: ignore the "fans" and enjoy the cheerful absurdity.

  • @noneoftheosrt I guess they just play music they enjoy without paying too much attention to what people would like

  • @noneoftheosrt the thing about Deerhoof is that they basically try to be controversial (regarding to lyrics, song structure etc), while at the same time obviously showing off a lot of talent. There's a lot of little things in Deerhoof songs that music-nerds like myself can sit and pick out, which I find interesting.

  • @noneoftheosrt

i will have to come across as a douche here, although not really, because even when Deerhoof play 'loose' you can notice that they have a lot of musicality. but it's pointless to argue, they're conservatory musicians with the exception of the singer (who in my opinion is very musical nonetheless). i won't tell you to go look for other songs of theirs that you can 'understand' easier, but i feel that one can usually when tell when someone's 'masking' their talent or not.

  • @LfunkeyA thanks for your thoughts, and you weren't douchey at all; in fact you're being pretty objective. so I appreciate that.

  • @noneoftheosrt - My like for Deerhoof is akin to my love for looking at sketchbooks over finished artwork. Which is the case with this song. This song is raw, it's like a thumbnail for an upcoming piece of work. It's experimental. And in that sense it's like viewing an intimate slice of the band. Jamming out & having fun in the creative process. Rather than "just" presenting their polished finished art, which is great also. Check out their song Spirit Ditties of No Tone /watch?v=jqDrHdotqUI

  • @doublesguy having said that, I am honestly interested in what you yourself consider a "good" band would sound like. For me, it needs to have some sort of rhythm (I actually think this song is in rhythm), a memorable tune, and some sort of motive. The thing that gets me about this song is that she's just singing 'Panda'. Songs were made to communicate what you can't say with words, so what is Matsusaki trying to convey with just 'Panda'?

  • @noneoftheosrt sometimes a panda is just a panda... way to think too hard

  • @horsedoctorman but whyy? Don't you wonder? This is not "just a panda", it's a song bout a panda. There had to be some reason behind this song being "Panda panda panda" and not "Tiger tiger tiger" or "owl owl owl"

  • @noneoftheosrt wow wait til you find out they also have a song called "come see the duck", you'll shit bricks

  • @horsedoctorman I've already heard come see the duck. No bricks were shat. Come see the duck has an actual sentence in it, not like one word. The less words you have the more emphasis on the leftover words. :p

  • @noneoftheosrt why are they singing about a duck and not a train? why is the guitarist wearing blue pants and not red, etc.

  • @horsedoctorman and also, why are you being so hostile? :\ I asked a genuine question. There's a difference between singing one word repeatedly and singing a sentence. Respect my curiositah!

  • @noneoftheosrt i would never be mean to a teen however your question is more than a little silly. you said yourself "Songs were made to communicate what you can't say with words" so why are you seeking a literal meaning - the words or word are not necessarily more important than any other element of the composition

  • @horsedoctorman I didn't say it was more important, just the part that I didn't get. Lyrics are part of a song too. If they felt like the words weren't important they could have easily made an instrumental song. I'm not even seeking a literal meaning. Just ANY meaning to "panda".

  • @noneoftheosrt though I'm really starting to believe that I should just chalk this up as something to be appreciated in its mystery :p

  • @noneoftheosrt ok i think it means panda

  • @horsedoctorman I can go on, but let's just end it on "lol" :)

  • @noneoftheosrt Well, for me good music is good music. From Muddy Waters to Japandroids, I never enter into a band expecting anything. I just let them play and if I like it, I like it. Also, when someone writes music, the only person they should be writing for is themselves. It doesn't matter if other people don't get the meaning, that's not what's important. Deerhoof doesn't write songs that an arena full of people can sing along too (although they can try too...mass hysteria)

  • @doublesguy I totally get that people should write music for themselves. I just thought that maybe there's some kinda difference between bands that get out there and perform and bands that reside in their garage and keep their craft to themselves, because the former want their music to BE heard. So there has to be at least some sort of consideration for the receiving end. But yes, I get ya. Yes, Dragonforce sucks, and yes, an open mind is always the way to go. That's why I'm asking questions!

  • @doublesguy Yeah, but they're not as good as the Foals :p

  • @doublesguy I hate how you think you have that individualist opinion, but when someone like you(80% of Chicago's "Wicker Park" population)were to hear a metal or metalcore song where the people are working as a tightly synchronized music machine and harmonizing multiple riffs and melodies to songs that took them more than 3 minutes and a"fuck, if we're weird beyond comprehension they'll like us"mentality to write,I would put down 20 dollars that you would call it tasteless garbage.

  • @doublesguy no, they really do just suck. they sound like my friends garage band. i love the kids in that too, but it doesnt make it suck any less.

  • @doublesguy no, they really do just suck. i have friends who are in a garage band and even though i love everyone of them, it doesnt mean they suck any less. as for the singer, i have respect for anyone who can get on stage and sing or preform, but to actully preform affectively, you need to be able to HEAR them.

  • @doublesguy I totally agree. As a senior music composition major up in the NW, we actually analyzed the rhythmic tendencies, pseudo-improved but actually rhythmically fascinating deconstructionist approach of Deerhoof, every live version is completely different and the band ungulates and swells organically to fit the approach-of-the-day, the studio version is nothing like EVERY live version they perform. It's intentional. And to say it's dadaism is only partially accurate, to address below

  • @doublesguy

Don't pity me, I don't enjoy deerhoof because I can't stand them. That's just me though, feel free to enjoy the music that you enjoy.

  • good!

  • pan-da pan-da pan-da PAN-da

  • YES!

  • @paulsbreakfast You said it, I miss Van Vliet so much and those legendary Saturday Night Live performances have all been removed...

  • great great great!!!

  • its awsum like Captain Beefheart !!

  • Oh Deerhoof...experimental rock minus everything I hate about experimental rock.

  • I cant say that if I ever listened to this at a party, or ever, I would look back on that moment and reminisce about what happened. I can look back at songs, albums, etc and say man, remember when that song/whatever was out, etc? Not this. Forgettable. I could almost guarantee the entirety of the fanbase uses apple products and supports some cause of some sort.

"Be yourself, by yourself, stay away from me." CFH

  • whatever dude......

  • Comment removed

  • I mean The Twelve Dastgahs might not be my favorite style of music, but I don't go out of my way to search out divergent stuff (for non-Arabs) and talk about how it sucks....

  • I find it interesting that some people search for deerhoof to talk about how they suck. I like 'em. Most people don't know shit.

  • some epic drumming right there

  • pure music in his own state

  • FUCKEN SHITE

  • @2strong2cool this stuff is almost as gay as a gay spaceship, the prius, which i bet they drive them.

  • Being weird for the sake of niche marketing.

  • @FW1337 In their case it's completely the opposite dude. There's a lot of that stuff around, but Deerhoof kept it fuckin' real man.

  • "Indie" is just short for indepentent or unsigned by a record label, that's all. Indie can be anything.

  • @ChesterAsucka By now I'd say there's "indie" the genre and "indie" in the meaning of independent, seeing as both uses are so frequent.

  • @SmokingOneTwo

I suppose your right, at least when it comes to the general public. However, I doubt any band starts off by saying, "Hey, were going to play indie music." ugh... I hope not.

  • @ChesterAsucka Haha, if there are, they're probably pretty superficial people.

  • Questionable Content!

  • quirky..... i kinda like the music.... :/ but its not something ill get hooked on i think, is this what they call "indie"?

  • this music is organized confusion

  • This bands music and especialy this song sound exactly like someone pooping an old black and white television set down a flight of stairs.

  • this is the greatest.

  • These guys are fucking clown-shoes. Just more shit that EVERYONE likes. Like Ben Stiller movies, and Whole Foods.

  • @turbidhat or like babies holding blankets

  • @turbidhat I think you are on the wrong video.I have never heard of this group until now.And they aren't mainstream AT ALL.

  • That Drummer is awsome

  • @iwasbornpurple That's Greg Saunier. He's married to the bass/vocals.

  • panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda panda

  • A fad? Explain to me how a band who has released nine albums in the past thirteen years is in any way a fad.

  • Tom Waits is different. This is a shitty fad.

  • This shit just seems to be a fad to me. Everyone that listens to them will be into something totally different in two years. I can imagine people at these shows just standing around ankwardly, drinking 8$ microbrews bragging about how 'low-emissions' their honda is.

  • @turbidhat

    that's how indie concerts go

  • @turbidhat you posted the same comment twice, d-bag. leave if you don't like it, lol.

  • @turbidhat

Whats wrong with listening to totally different music in two years? I'm not going to listen to the same album for the rest of my life, no matter how good it is. Although I am a die hard fan of music...

Deerhoof is alright, not close to my favorite. I don't blame you for not liking them.

    Tom Waits is the man.

  • wow. really? come on man. thats just not right! and downright mean!

  • Can someone please explain this music to me? The drummer is obviously talented, but I cant help but watch this and get the vibe that they're just playing this shit just to be different. I'm not saying anything like "they suck" or "this is gay", They no doubt have SOME talent, but I can't help but think that they're wasting it. I just don't get it.
