Because in the 80s it was cool to play guitars that had a heavy metal look, just as it was was cool to use giant drum sets with 1000 cymbals and 2 bass drums although you never hear the double bass actually being played. Pretty pretentious decade.

Because it was a video clip for a mid 80s movie so it had to be trendy. Queen were always quite bad when they did a soundtrack, because thay had to change their timeless rock to whatever was cool.

By the way, I remeber Brian playing some Fender Strats for some time in the early 80s along with his Red Special.
