  • sounds good!

  • it is a little harder to play fast but you can bend the shit out of the strings the grip is awesome after a while you overcome the challenges and learn to play just as fast also when you get used to it you no longer care much for flat fingerboards

  • far beyond the sun fail

  • so overall does it slow you down or speed you up? I'm not talking over time or at first, I mean period. are you faster, slower, advantages, disadvantages, what 's the overall difference? beside bending, I hear it makes bending so much easier.

  • Does scalloping the frets make it easier or harder to play? Just curious.

  • what song is that at 2:30?

  • @sethandmattPWN

The solo from Metallica's Nothing else matters, I guess...

  • @makihun88 thats what i thought too

  • pagininis 5th caprice! someones seen crossroads =)

  • 2:30 Metallica!!

  • @sethandmattPWN YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @whatthebollocks what song is it? im having a brain fart

  • well malmsteen has a classical technique which is very hard stuff to play as well jazz is another hard thing to play but anyone in the world can play metal rock easy blues same unless you are jimi or SRV

  • why is there so much hate between musical genres? there are good and bad parts to every style. claiming what you like is the best just makes you look stupid.

  • @theponchoman That's what I love so much about Yngwie. He takes a little from Hendrix, a little from Van Halen, a little bit from Bach and Paganini, and throws in some of his own shit and crosses ALL musical boundaries. A true genius and legend in every sense of the word.

  • I have small frets on my axe and its kinda annoying so would scalloping the frets be something like putting bigger frets on it?

  • As all of us know, scalloped frets improves vibrato and bends, but what about tapping? I allways thought tapping would be probably harder on a scalloped neck, is this true?

  • does anyone know if its safe to scallop frets with shark tooth inlays on a ibanez rg series

  • @CrushedJustice y wouldnt it be

  • @TheAlexkru cause i have no idea how thick the inlay goes in and i don't want to end up having inlays falling off

  • @CrushedJustice good thought

  • @CrushedJustice it will mutilate the inlays. it actually looks kind of badass though. Got it on my ibanez RG370DX

  • how come you can play some scale shred pieces well but tap so poorly?

  • @jackofwack

I can shred the blues but still can't tap for shiz.

  • You played Far Beyond the Sun! Nice!

  • LOL. Looks like you're jacking off right at the end... Nice shred.

  • I am going to buy one off Warmoth Custom Guitar Parts, don't wnat to risk my stock neck...

  • SinsBlessing, You have to realize though, if you put Yngwie on a Non-Scalloped neck. Yes he would play well, but no where near as good as he can on a Scalloped Neck.

  • @Epiphonewylde He can go faster on non-scalloped he just perfurs the feal

  • @SoundOfAShark depends on how much you scallop it

  • 50.000th

  • why didnt u scalloped that fender guitar behind?

  • sounds like yngwie malmsteen

  • If you can play correct and clear then you havent probs with scallopt frets.. scallopt is easier for my as normal frets

  • well, I find it better for solos. It gives you more control of the strings, and allows higher bends and faster playing (when you get used to it)

  • just scalloped my fret board on my guitar

  • what's scalloped frets?

  • You sand the frets to be almost "U" formed frets.

It's so your finger doesn't touch the fretboard.

  • Its not scalloped frets. Its scalloped fretboard. Its when the wood between the frets is scooped out. I was just saying cuz some people may take it as you have to file the frets which is NOT what you wanna do.

  • epic fail!

  • sweep fail

  • O.o he never said you have to touch the wood and he only said if you press "too hard " someone not used to that might have some trouble with it.....lay off newb

  • How long does it take (on average) to get used to a scalloped neck? And what's it like when you play a scalloped neck for the first time?

    Thanks,

    -Dave.

  • What happened with the Fuckin' strap button?!?!?!?!?jajaja.

  • EVH influence I would say! :O)

  • I'd say Yngwie Malmsteen :P

  • buy a dimarzio ym sign

  • your fretboard is fucked up man! buy a new guitar or try the ones hanging on the wall!

  • First of all its really hard to play scalloped fret guitars for the first time!!(idiot) And second id like to see you try and play like this on your first time

  • you stupid guy! i'm not talkin about the hardness of playing a scalloped guitar!

just saying "don't turn your guitar into the garbage" secondly, if it's hard to play then why scallope it you moron!!!

  • ur not the one playing the guitar, if he wants a scalloped guitar let him have one. there are pro and cons of haveing a scalloped fretboard, and having a normal fretboard. its all on each individual player's taste. and its not harder to play a scalloped guitar. its actually alot easier to bend cuz theres no friction form the fret board wood. try one for yourslef, then form your opinion.

  • nice malmsteen haha

  • So stupid...

    wimpy pickups = single coil?

    loser musicians = you?

    testicles = I love you?

  • what about Iron Maiden

  • nice;)

    Far beyond the sun ftw

  • its easier to shred cuz u dont have to press that hard on the fretboard

  • so if i wanna shred like joe stump, should i have my frets scalloped? if you dont have to press as hard to fret a note, then everything on the guitar will be easier, except for chords right?

  • it hard to get used to but chord techniques such as barring are alot easier on your fingers because you dont have press as hard

  • turn it up a little more !!!

  • Which is the difference between normal and scalloped frets?

  • the fretboard has part of it scooped out in between the frets. your fingers dont even touch the fretboard on fast runs

  • Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow or Blackmores Night) was actually the first person to use scalloped frets everywere

  • Richie uses graduated scalloped frets, Yngwie Frets the entire thing.

  • what is graduated scalloped frets? more scalloped towards the body, less towards headstock?

and do you think its truly easier to play faster with scalloped frets?

  • Scalloped frets actually make it a lot harder to play faster. Yngwie says he scallops his frets for the easier vibrato on the the string. Richie Blackmore scalloped his frets deeper at one side of the fret board because he had trouble bending the strings.

  • ive been hearing its harder at first, but in the long run you can play faster with scalloped frets, once you get used to them?

  • Nope it's still harder, the fact you don't need to press as hard is why. If you press to hard you'll make the note sharp and you'll just sound really off. its purely for the control on the string. If it was easier then everyone have a scalloped neck.

  • good point, it just seemed like the super fast shredders like jow stump and yngwie, all have em scalloped

  • omg.

  • it depends on person, i scalloped an played 4 guitars, a lot, but aggravating for chords, an no resale value, i aint blackmore, dont do valuable guitars,, yes bends are better, yep you been watching crossroads movie, i heard that, mozart, an respect,,notice blackmore plays lightly, an few chords on strat, very lightly, check out his picato strings, europe only, weird gauges, i love em though, 10,,11,14,,24,36.42,, i think, he has very fast vibrato, best guitarist in history easily, blackmore..

  • What are scalloped frets lol, kinda feel stupid asking in a video about scalloped frets

  • just learned today, its when theres kinda like a half pipe shape indent between each fret so you push down on the metal instead of against wood.

  • what's the purpose of scalloped frets?

  • is it necessary to scallop ur frets to get the yngwie sound ?? scalloped frets look scary..must be difficult to play fast

  • scalloped frets arent what give yngwie his sound, they just force you to use a lighter touch so that you dont bend the note out of tune, making it easier to play faster =P

  • @dhakagod not true, thats a common misconception scalloped fretboards actually require less energy to play because your not having to push against the fret board. The only reason people think its harder is because ynwie said it was and well thats his opinion, but alot of people say he just said that to make himself look good, he has to play on a harder instrument ect....

  • @dhakagod No, many people cover this song without scalloped frets.

However, it is more necessary to get the correct tuning. For this check some tabs for yngwie, they will tell you what to tune to.

    hope this helps

  • @dhakagod lol dude you dont need scalloped frets for anything. its just a preference in the feel of the guitar for some

  • @Ozznize ok...understood... ya i realised it later.. when me and my friend played the same thing with the same guitar and amp settings... its in our hands...

  • im guessing that yngwie malmsteen inspired you to scallop your frets, judging by the music :D

  • what effect does scalloping your frets have

    plz tell !!!!!

  • Less *pressure*? That would be down to string tension alone. And, low action can be achieved on any guitar with an uncompromised neck. The bad news is, scalloping can affect the relief in the neck, esp. if it's very thin. (yes thay are that sensitive, look up compression-fretting for example.) It'll also screw the resale value.

Reasearch time for you too, methinks.

  • if you have ever played one you would understand. also the scallops aren't very deep, like a luthier once told me. you can't tell the difference in depth in a boat if your out in 20ft or 200ft depth.

  • I have, and I don't dislike them. But, many people are hacking gouges of their necks at home that go down almost to the base of the fingerboard...

  • hahahaha thats why you should either have experience or pay a luthier. i am thinking about doing a year of lutier school in BC canada summit luthier. don't know if you have heard of it.

let the noobs ruin they're guitars they will learn eventually.

  • that's not true, it doesn't help with speed, on the other way round, it's harder to play faster, but the sound is cleaner, but it's much more easy to bend,

  • less friction means better speed and thats what all the players who use it say. yngwie etc...

  • it made my sweeps sound better and it made string changing easier

  • woot far beyond the sun and scalloped frets, i just got a new gibson and am thinking about scalloping my old fender

  • LMFAO

  • SOZ BUT CAN SOME ONE TELL ME WHAT scalloped frets ARE

  • all it is is that instead of pressing down on to wood you press down on air, there are "valleys" between the metal ridges, it takes getting used to you can tell by the vid

  • All play Yngwie don't they? Is it not incredible.. Scalloped frets are nice and stuff, but it's the talent that's the main thing. Blink 182 + scalloped frets = still nothing, Yngwie + non-scalloped = still Shredtastic.

  • @SinsBlessing I want to scallop the frets of my guitar even though I dont like Yngwie as much(Im not into shredding anymore, in the end, its all the same and blah blah). I just like the sound of scalloped frets.

  • @SinsBlessing blink 182 = talented songwriting. yngwie = talented guitar playing.

  • @theponchoman then i guess it should be yngwie playing guitar for blink 182

  • @Budbreaker420 and tom delonge should write songs for yngwie

  • @theponchoman thats so fucking bullshit u idiot learn some theory

  • @richogem okay, im curious. do you like stuff by marvin gaye or al green? or muddy waters and buddy guy?

  • @theponchoman ive never gotten to listen to their music.

  • @richogem wow...thats sad. you can go ahead and call me an idiot for thinking that blink has some talent. if you dont know gaye, green, or any of the old blues players then i just feel sorry for you. keep on talking about theory if you want. but theory without soul is meaningless.

  • @theponchoman

i understand why anyone would think yngwie has no soul in hes playing.

but if you would have listened to hes less shreddy stuff, you would have known.

and dont think im saying this because im a malmsteen-fanboy or something...

i dont listen to him, and i hate him, because i hate this style of playing.

but A7X will never be as good as him both in technique and in theory.

and just so you know, i do listen to blues. i dont know these artists because i listen to heavy metal/hard rock.

  • Scallop makes the guitar lighter to the touch. So the questions not does it make you faster. You can make the guitar faster with scalloped frets. It also makes vibrato bends have no noise of string on wood. Scalloping the entire guitar makes chording difficult. I would reccomend a progressive scallop. Another thing is that the strings become ALOT more important on a scalloped guitar. I know because ive bought different kinds of strings and if the strings are thick or slippery, its harder to play

  • what does scalloping frets change like wat's the point

  • firstly, if anyone tells you it lets you play faster, they're lying. at first it's odd not being able to feel the wood but you get used to it. the biggest advantage is that bends and vibrato become incredibly easy. you have a lot more string control. but this is a hindrance too. it means you have to be a lot more careful with the pressure that you apply to the strings, because too much will bend the notes out of tune, since there isn't wood to stop you from pressing too hard.

  • wow, that would feel weird, i like to feel the fret board with my fingers :), it would feel like playing strings that are floating

  • I recently played a malmsteen strat, it was awesome but I can't afford it T.T (plus I use 12's with an ungodly low action , so I was too worried that it would bow the neck)

  • whats the difference between scalloped frets and jumbo frets

  • jumbo frets are the actual fret size (meaning the metal wire on the neck) when some body says the fret board is scalloped it means the wood between the frets is kinda scooped out so its like theres a little valley between the frets.

  • ive heard that scalloping actually hinders the speed, could be wrong could be right. . . :/

  • i don't think yngwie malmsteen's speed is hindered at all.

you just have to get used to them a bit.

  • i noticed since i did it to my epi sg i can play a lot more accurately at high speeds because it only takes a little press to sound a note on a scalloped neck

  • Yngwie!!!!!!!!!!

  • how do you like the scalloping? Do you find it easier to play?

  • Man your pressing to hard thats why your somewhat out of tune:P I press incredibly lightly. It's something to work on haha. . . and i noticed paganini's 5th in there haha

  • people say its easier to play scalloped necks but yngwie says its hard because u need to get used to it. so what do u think? is it harder to play on scallop?

  • I scalloped a fretboard myself on one of my guitars and i would say it is harder, only until you get used to it. but if you play a non-scalloped neck for awhile without paying the scallop then it does become harder. that's what i found anyways. but it's not significantly harder.

but it's not going to be extremely difficult to play a scalloped neck. and it takes like a week to get used to it. not that hard AT ALL.

they're also Very Very comfortable to play.

  • nice!, ill look into them then. i was always hesisant to scallop cuz i thought it would be uncomfortable. ty

  • dude its his first time ever on a scalloped fretboard (believing him that he isnt lying)

its harder to play on those frets dude

  • paganini's 5th caprice is at 2;00ish

  • What is he playing at 2:00 ive heard it before but ive never actully listened to the song. it sounds like fun to play, i might learn it :)

  • I think its Eugene's Trick bag by Steve Vai, i could be wrong, try searching for the tab.

  • did i hear some of euguenes trick bag???

  • thats all malsteen. i forgot which song, but i have it on cd.

  • It's Far Beyond The Sun :)

  • i heard a little eruption

  • actually i think that was one

if you are talking about the beginning im sure it was meallicas One solo

  • no it was near the end at about 3:30, he did a little bit that sounded a lot like eruption

  • later in the video it is just guitar abuseing...dude play with feeling don't fuck up ur guitar -_-

  • was that a malmsteem you played? sounds like it

  • "scalloped frets" is an old Indian phrase used for "bad guitar player" haha jk, ive never played a scalloped neck, but i have no probs with vibratos and stuff

  • wath a fuck off

  • u play voodoo chile SOOOOOO WROOOOOOOOOOONG

  • i dont want to sound like a noobie lol but what do scalloped frets do?

  • its when the frets dig down in like a concave shape. you dont have to press the string down as hard

  • so you can play faster solo's with scalloped fret's that's pretty kool thanks>>>

  • u dont really play faster, u just have better control over notes and arpeggios, at least thats what i find

  • Yes... Your fingers don't actually touch the fretboard. It's like the frets are floating.

  • I love my scalloped frets. The keys guys is a light touch.

  • what is scalloped frets...and what makes it so different?

  • scalloped frets are when the wood between the frets are cruved in.

  • oh i see, thx

  • Is the entire fretboard scalloped?

  • Why do people wanna play on scalloped frets ? hehe :D never done it, but does it feels different or does it gives different sound?

  • makes it faster to access upper frets and the whole fingerboard making it easier to shred. look up yngwie malmsteen and see his shredding. it also feels different as where u dont have to touch the board with the string just the metal frets

  • Ah nice! But is there any disadvantages with it? Or does it just take time to get into it?

  • yeah, it feels weird and hard to get used to. when you push down on the string it doesnt make contact with the fretboard, making it feel weird. And if not pressed down enough you will get string buzz from the metal fret dividers. Tedious but fun

  • Ah ok :p Thanks for the info and tip.

  • the bad thing of scalloped frets is that playing chords is VERY HARD :s thats the reason i dont get one

  • but you dont have to scallop all the frets - you could leave out the firt 9 so playing chords wont be a problem

  • cool fucking neck tho can't wait to get one myself

  • no sense of rythm

  • oh yea, scalloped fretboards are awkward as hell at first but there great once your used to them...

  • 0:06 sounds like the 1 part in power rangers lol

  • the frets are not scalloped its the board that is scalloped

  • i am very new to playing guitar.

    what does scalloped frets mean?

i allready know what frets are. haha.

  • the frets are rounded inward towards the neck or "scalloped" it makes it so your fingers do have to touch the actual wood of the fretboard just push down on the strings

  • oh

    thanks

  • Shitty shredding, shitty phrasing.

  • are scalloped frets easier to play or are they harder people have told me both.

  • Well, its different, its harder in that you have to train yourself to not push as hard, but it also makes a much better tone.

  • thank you

  • Scalloped frets are when you wipe cooked scallops sauteed in garlic butter to your fret board to make the action faster & less binding , kinda like wax on wax off.

  • lolz

  • actually there's also a different process by the same name. It's where the frets are made from scallop shells. Makes it nice and fast too.

  • What does scalloping cost

  • I might get my Jackson scalloped.

  • are all the frets scalloped or just the higher ones?

  • just fa higher ones
