  • I really want one of these, but I don't have any cash so I'm trying to trade for one :/ its a pain dealing with the guys on bladeforums

  • Great knife just bought one . i dont think i can own another brand know lol

  • Ordered one today.

Coupon on cutleryshoppe on Benchmade products took it from $93 to $70. AND used the code nutnfancy for free shipping. :)

  • BOUGHT ONE TODAY!!!!!!!! i love it! first knife over $80 for me. well worth it

  • @asdfghj41701 i bought one today from my local gun store haha, $75, online it is $105 or something like that haha

  • just got this knife last night love it light i got it with the tonto ( if thats how you spell it ) and it was the first present i opend and i used it to open all my other presents and it fits great in the pocket cant feel it at all ... great knife

  • could you do an update of this knife with a longer review and any of your new opinions

  • I can't tell you how I love your reviews. Thank You

  • I just want to say thanks for your reviews. This is a most excellent knife (I like it better than my Sog flash 2 tanto plain edge) I recently had an excellent experience with Benchmade customer service that I wanted to mention it. I had gotten my griptilian from a re-seller, but I got their display model and the blade was messed up. Not only did they give me a brand-spankin-new blade for free, but they also upgraded my blade to a black-coated blade for free!

    Keep up the great reviews!

  • LETS SEE THE 9555

  • It will make a great French bread cutter.

  • The best way I can put it is BUY ONCE, CRY ONCE. Dig deep and spend the cash till it hurts for quality. If you buy cheap crap then you will have to buy it over and over and over again. You may even get hurt by a failing knife of poor quality. Then you have cried a river of tears and spent 10x the ammount you should have in the end. Be smart and look at the big picture and the long haul, BUY ONCE, CRY ONCE. I love my griptilian 550HG.

  • "That's my email, not yours." Haha, this struck me as funny:)

  • Does this knife really have a Zytel handle? On BM's site, it states it's a Valox grip. I bought this knife awhile back based on this review, so just curious. thanks!

  • @AznVamp24 they are black Noryl GTX and Valox handle.

  • This is my go-to knife. Love it.

  • i use this knife every day at my painting job, love it, one of my favorite blades owned so far.

Next up is an Anza =D

  • Hondarider-

Most do, but be prepared to touch up the edge...some benchmade are known to come a tad dull. But, in my opinion, if you are going to buy a fine, quality knife of the caliber of a Benchmade, you probably know about knives, and you probably have the tools to sharpen a knife.

  • 8:16, blade looks like a dinosaur.

  • PLZ RESPOND! Does this knife come sharp out of the box??????

  • @hondarider9494 yes indeed. shave sharp.

  • @hondarider9494 Absolutely Razor Sharp, I got mine today and the first thing it cut was me. I did a cut test on paper and was able to do 2 S cuts with ease.

  • is it a heavy or medium folder ?

  • Update: it now cuts like it's supposed to. Slices like "Jack The Ripper"!

  • I recived my Benchmade Griptilian 550 HG, in the mail yesterday. With one exception, I was realy impressed with it. The cutting edge - to put it politely - SUCKS bigtime! At the moment it makes a joke of the Handle With Care, warning on the end of the box. I am going to have to get it professionaly reprofiled, once I get that done this knife has the potential to become one of my favorites.

  • Nutn, you can't have a Grip without the steel "liners". The steel is part of the locking mech, and in order to properly anchor it to the handle it must be extended along the length of the handle. If you take apart a griptilian you'll see what I mean.

  • d2 vs s30v. who wins?

  • @xmoonxdoggyx Depends on what you want. Coming from a knifemaker, I use D2 on knives that need to cut for a long time without sharpening. S30V would be a steel I'd use on a knife that could be maintained frequently. Truth be told tho, neither are favorite steels of mine. I use a lot of M4 and M390 for my higher end knives and S7/1095 and ATS-34/BG-42 for my more affordable offerings.

  • Love the vid. Love the blade. Think you would be willing to sell?

  • My edc utility knife is a Gerber evolution Jr. Strait blade...that's right just like nutnfancy. I wana cut if I'm using a knife not tear. I love it even with a 2.75inch blade. Light weight and useful.

  • Nutnfancy is so much more up tight than in his current videos. It's neat to see the change in personality over the years

  • Veri - What is your EDC knife or knives?

  • Ordered one of these but my supplier was out of stock. "How about a 551 instead?" he asked. My response was "OK as long as it's a plain edge." Done deal. Got it yesterday and I can sum it up in one word; QUALITY. Love it!

  • Nutn, thats what happens when you dont keep the Benchmades and Spydies seperate.

  • man this knife looks like a spyderco fucked a bencmade and had an awesome baby...i want!

  • man this knife looks like a spyderco humped a bencmade and had an awesome baby...i want!

  • ive been having problems with my griptilian getting loose-"blade play" after a couple deployments of the blade any suggestions?

  • @oesterle63 u prob gott a lemon in which something went wrong cuz every other griptiilian i used has PERECT lockup! soo i would contact benchmade and ask them so send a new one and u send ur old one back.

  • @oesterle63 loctite the pivot screw

  • has anyone had problems with the griptilian having to much blade play? after i would say 15-20 deployments of the blade my griptilian gets loose its pretty frustrating paying the money for one when i could have gotten a couple kershaws for the price i payed

  • @oesterle63 My Mini-grip has always has slightly mushy feel in side to side play. Even after self servicing it.

In my opinion the Grip is not near as tough as some folks say , I find it to be a fairy flimsy knife for all the hype is gets. ( in the seeveral I have handled ) and the Mini-grip I own.

Not a bad knife for light chores but it is not anywhere near a hard-use knife.

  • The Griptilian's a classic medium folding knife.

I don't especially dig the Benchmades with the thumb holes. No one does the thumb hole as well as Spyderco -- and even then, I prefer a Benchmade, use the Axis Lock for quick opening. Dinking around with a Spyderco thumb hole is less safe IMO when it's done fast.

Just one opinion though. Good review.

Right now I'm sweating the new 551H2O Griptilian - hunter orange handle and some type of hardcore anti-corrosion "scalpel steel" blade.

  • With my Benchmade 551 you can wrist flick the knife open w/o the stud or the lock mech. It’s much faster than an auto-knife. Takes a little practice. Just hold it and flick.

  • spyderco clone wars

  • Completely agree on the combination edge. Part saw + part knife = useless for most things.

  • i have the mini griptilian 555hg in pink i love best edc blade ever love the griptilian too

  • Man stop complain on the jumping stuff...ITS fucking EDC, we dont often use it for a tectical issues...thats the whole point of EDC! [Every Day Carry!!!] ohh and btw Benchmade knives are so good and so much above all the other knives that you should forgive them and say thank you for making knives that good --- Tyler

  • love my griptilian. got mine in partially serated.

  • likability scale? im just curious.

  • @dahgutone Thanks for asking! I didn't realize that it wasn't under the video. Nutnfancy Likeability Scale 9 out of 10. -- Veri

  • @wharghoul You lost me at "kid". --- Veri

  • @wharghoul Wow what's your deal? Looked at your channel page and nearly every comment left there is calling you a troll or some other pejorative. Where you beat up on the playground too much? Step back and cool off. Acting out won't get you far.

  • @wharghoul fail

  • @wharghoul wow!!! not really ( yes i am a martial artiest) and you can draw one of the super tactical commando knives with jimmping but i would just carry a good utility knife and take there knife most likely a kitchen knife proven as the most used type of knife i crime and and cut them with it

  • @wharghoul = tool!

  • If NUTN'S 4oz. weight limit is "arbitrary, " then how can it be "well reasoned"?

  • @muzza6793 I believe that would be a subjective measure of what's comfortable without being too bulky for extended carry. Since it's more subjective rather than based in scientific fact, he deems it "arbitrary"

  • I went to purchase a tactical folder and was choosing between and Endura 4 and a Grip. Every grip I tried had nuts side to side play, all 6 or so of the blades I tried had the play. Is the solution just a simple tightening of the pivot screw? If so, I will most likely purchase one. Feedback is desired if anyone has any personal experience with this. Thanks.

  • @xDEMONIZEDx Side to side play is the pivot screw.

  • just got the griptilian 551, and i love it! i can hardly put the knife down, thank you for the great reveiw nutnfancy, i have watched it a few time now haha

  • This is the best knife I've ever owned, and I own a few. It was actually a birthday gift from my father(I didn't spend the $100 on it =p). It came razor sharp out of the box in a nice pouch(which I still keep it in when I'm not carrying it). The axis lock is as solid as everyone says, much better than the typical lockback. I personally prefer to have partial serration, but I have no complaints. Great knife, truly.

  • Help me here folks: I am about 4 years into collecting. Yes, even I have too many knives. However, to my shame, I do not own a single Benchmade. DO I NEED to own a Benchmade? Will I love it, no matter what the cost. Or, am I just cheep, cheep, cheap.

  • @jr66167 BS man...Spyderco is an innovative/qualtiy, on par competitor to Benchmade. The VG-10 Japanese steel(their most common one) vs. the 154CM(Benchmade's standard) are evenly matched. I luv both brands. But I personally favor Spyderco. Thinner profiles and that Spyderhole is great. I am more of a lock back guy, also. I own this Benchmade, luv it. But I must say the jimping and hole aren't up to Spyderco standards. I personally would recommend an Endura 4 over this.

  • @mrtoady2 I broke 2 Spydercos and almost lost some fingers each time. I wasn't even abusing them. Maybe I wasn't lucky with my knives (twice?) but I'm done with that brand. BM on the other hand are really reliable, expensive, yes, but when you like your fingers attached to your hand it's totally worth it.

Just my opinion based on my experience. To each his own.

  • @hironakamura69 Sorry to hear that the knives failed on you. I have never had any such problems. My I ask which models, so that I can take that into account? Were they liner lock or lockback? I just can't fathom my delica(s) or Endura(s) giving out like that. I would agree BM's trademark Axis lock is solid. I have never experienced or heard of any major failures from people I know that carry them.

  • @mrtoady2 Both were Endura with FRN handles and lockbacks, the first time I was tearing down an old bike tire and the lockback sprang out of the back of the handle, causing the blade to fold backwards on my thumb. The 2nd one was a bit loose (I might have abused that one just a tiny bit lol) and unlocked by itself. I bought both of them on the same day in the same shop, I might have stumbled upon a bad bunch, dunno.

  • @hironakamura69 On the other hand, I heard about someone who almost cut their finger off after their mini grip axis lock failed.

  • @xander6100 yeah I guess whatever the brand, we should be carefull and never think that a knife can't fail us...

  • Jimping has never been an issue for me with any knife. If you have trouble holding a "mildly" jimped knife, you've probably got girly hands...Just sayin'

  • Just bought an OD griptilian, tanto tip, combo edge. Awesome knife, Love the ambi-lock and ambi-clip (I'm a lefty). Wish it wasn't combo edge but I can live with it. Thanks Benchmade for putting the clip on the PROPER end of the knife.

Seriously though, what is with the manufacturer and retailer hard-on for combo edges?! Go to any knife shop and almost 75% of offerings anymore have it. What happened to gold old-fashioned functional reliable maintainable STRAIGHT knives?

  • @loghead03 I agree about the combo edge thing. Just a guess, but I'd bet it's more based on looks than anything else. They're all about selling knives and there's (unfortunately) probably a big demand for the silly combo edge. Don't own one and never will.

  • Just got mine 5 minutes ago and i can tell i'm going to LOVE this knife.

  • I was going to get one of these at the show this weekend and they were out of 2 different knives i wanted than they said I could carry a auto in the stat that I live in to only find out when I got home I cannot unless I am military/police.... thanks bogus-made!

  • Can someone PLZZZ help mee??i just bought the 551 grip but the mechanism is really rough, (it dos not open as fast as nutins) & i tried playing around with it for 2 days now but its rough, how do i make it smooth?????

    PLZZZZhelp??

  • @akn2008 send it in because thats unacceptible

  • @akn2008 You just have to loosen the pivot screw a touch. I had the same experience with my Benchmade 710. I was horrified at first but a quick turn of the pivot screw and it was transformed. AXIS lock gives me wet dreams:)

  • @akn2008 oil it at the base of the blade and open and close it...if that does not work you may have to tinker with the lock up

  • I'm a HG fan.

  • I love my grippy. And Nutnfancy, you are right on the money regarding the metallic portion of the jimping. Benchmade needs to make that portion just little sharper and a good time will be had by all.

  • Did you just say bitchmade!

  • I so regret buying the comboedge version. Other than that, you have no idea how many times mine has come in handy!

  • hey this or the 940?

  • The 940!

  • Comment removed

  • @JSM10069 ok but i trash my knive well not really but use them alot food prep hacking wood camping and alot of stuff like that.

  • @TheDelica4 - well for all that, you might consider a Ka-Bar :)

  • @JSM10069 true thanks but might go with the Spyderco Military

  • @TheDelica4 yeah save up for the 940!

  • @timeactor idk i use them hard. to nice for a 12 year old boy to get you think?

  • I tought you sed Bitch made

  • got one when they first came out.have both sizes actually and like them both.just not sold on 440c and will probably replace them with 154cm versions

  • Hate the look of that blade.

  • couldn't agree more.

  • The function is probably great. The have a new Bone Collector Knife with a similar blade style but a little better looking.

  • whats the benefit of the HG instead of a thumbstud?

  • God I hate the way knife companies always make special editions combo edge. WHY! Why do they do that.

  • totally agree

  • @soul111smasher To be able to sell ther stupid combo egde blades ;)

  • @soul111smasher Exactly....Benchmade did a Navy Seals limited edition Grip series.......all combo edges:(

  • omg lucky. il buy it for 5

  • i think i'll keep it lol

  • lol i would to

  • Just bought this blade today.$100.

  • bit of warning on this knife, do not try to open and close it very quickley using the axis lock UNTIL you are used to the mechanism. your muscle memory will cause you to get in the way of the blade and you will cut the fuck out of one of your fingers

  • Got the 551 on basis of this review, thanks nutnfancy!

  • i actually really like that this knife has liners... and the jimping is pretty functional IMO. i have a 551sbk, so maybe the jimping on the black surface is a little sharper than on the non coated blades.

  • Great knife I have the Ritter Griptilian.

  • Can anyone give me specifications on how thick the grip is, to know how thick it will be in my pocket?

  • I love this knife... and hate that it has no tip-down carry option. So close to perfect...

  • Spyderco copy?

  • pretty much

  • just the thumb hole...

  • So would you prefer the HG version or the thumb stud version? Im looking to buy one thats why im asking.

  • i have the blue one the difference comes down to what you prefer they are both awesome blades

  • its all personal preference. with the thumb hole however, you can put a zip tie on it and have a little ghetto emerson wave.

  • lol never thought of that

  • I just bought this in OD green and love it. Thanks for the review.

  • Why are all tables so ugly?

  • Because they are designed to work. Just like: Toyota, Benchmade and the United States Marine Corps. OOrah

  • by the way, some of those things are beautiful BECAUSE they work so well.

    COUGH-COUGH-USMC-COUGH-COUGH

  • Funny that you thumb down my comment and not langdon04's

  • i thought the handle was just plain old plastic.

  • their site posts the griptiian at 3.25 oz. and the SOG Flash 2 listed at 3.1oz. So not as big of a weight difference from eachother.

  • i own this griptilian in od green with black coated partially serrated and also a SOG Flash II. The Benchmade feels more solidly built, and the handle is very ergonomic. You can use it as a punch or brass knuckles. Also it's the Cabela's exclusive D2 blade, it's very resiliant. But the flash is razor sharp where as it's tough for me to get the griptilian that sharp, but nonetheless can be used like a box cutter. the AXIS system is by far the best system too easily opened out of pocket 1 hand

  • Aus8 (flash) is much easier to sharpen than the D2 on your grip, what do you use to sharpen your knives?

  • Nutnfancy, you da man, thanks so much for these reviews. I find myself more and more impressed with your knowledge. Thanks for doing this.

  • Lol but you cant conceal a big sword :P

  • none of which matter when you're a middle school kid who "skate board and finger board"

is more of an adult protection and law enforcement thing. kids who run around with katana are reason why the 9 o clock news feature "police officer double tapped a student"

  • why is benchmade using the famous hole from spyderco knives? udually benchmade folders use thumb studs dont they?

  • probbably because spyderco is getting grant money

  • This knife is also available in a thumb stud version: the 551.

  • they make a mini version of this knife called 555hg mini griptillian

  • What do you guys think of this vs the Tenacious Spyderco???

  • This beats it hands down

  • i have the Tenacious, but i would choose the griptillian because of the superior steel. also just handled one in store today and it felt amazing, opened smoothly and locked tightly.

  • Comment removed

  • Is benchmade allowed to use those holes? Aren't they patented by spyderco?

  • its not patented its just kinda spyderco's 'thing'

  • they had a patent but it has expired,

  • Lol i can just see some spyderco representative.

Hi , I'd like to patent putting a hole in a blade.....

    whut?

    XD

  • @OTEP1234567891011 Spyderco invented the damn hole so it really should be theirs alone.

  • Thank you! Excellent review. I am going to buy Griptilian 550 or Spyderco Endura. What do you think is better?

  • Go with the griptilian, you can get them much cheaper too. You're almost able to get two for the price of the Endura.

  • Thank you!

  • Hey, bass pro shop has the od/black blade in pe.

  • where do you get these?

  • ebay, just search on google, or go to the benchmade website

  • plus benchmade has the LifeSharp thing. send ur knife in just pay shipping and they restore it to factory sharpness

  • the griptilian is one of the best knives...jimping yes

  • thx man nice vid all your vids are very helpful and infomative keep them up

  • nice knife,,,great review !!

  • I just bought it. thx for video, helped a lot . greetings from Poland.

  • hey do u have any buck knives if u do can u make a video about them

  • Nutnfancy: you mentioned that you would rather not have liners to save weight. I believe that liners are required for the axis lock system, or at least that's part of what the patent for the system revolves around.

  • Deployment?

  • it deploys really fast. and closes really fast too. i know because i just got my dad one for fathers day.

  • if a knife has any wiggle, i hate it.

  • i have an axis lock and a nitrous benchmade. a 530 for the axis and a 913 for the nitrous. i think the nitrous is faster. but i also believe that the axis is a better lock. mainly because the axis has no blade play. the nitrous has a little side to side blade play. and when i say a little i mean a very little amount. either one is a good choice.

  • thanks... i want a mini or full sized gript.

  • what price did you get it at

  • You got some balls man.. basicly the first one to complain on benchmade knives.. :D

  • I have to say the Axis lock is easily the best locking/opening on any knife. Engineered perfectly for great lock up with no blade play at all, easy one hand opening and closing.

Definitely love the Mini Grip better, but the full size models are great!

  • Benchmade did a very good job on the jimping on their Rukuc, some of the best and about 2 inches of it.
