  • sung this in music class

  • PTL!!!

  • They both died millionaire in that time ;) also millionare used to cook dinner for people on the street in her home. Today world cant do thay smh r.i.p nate king cole and mahalia jacksons

  • Yeah. To H__l with those stiff a_s white people. We got whitey on the run!

  • @expertcompsci and black people so white people are so racist...

  • look shes left handed

  • This Music and MAHALIA makes me ... going crazy !!!!!!!

  • Go girl you know you can sing

  • RACISM/HATRED is a evil demonic sickness ! i watched a tv program about the great nat king cole having a sucessful tv show/variety but it was cancelled because the whites in the South complained /threatened. Mahalia Jackson was true to God because she only would perform gospel/Christian songs !

  • @moroccopink it wasnt just whites in the south. ti was all over.

  • Too bad our first "black" President has no problem studying wars and starting them. You listen to this song. You watch MLK's speech. You get hopeful. Then you look out at the world around you and get disappointed.

  • i love mj

  • The only thing that works with my wife is these kinds of songs by MJ thank you

dear lady gone but will never be forgotten.

ever since that wife of mine tore up my Bible it was downhill theses are the only songs that keeps her quiet. I got put out for her lies later vindicated. Whats next?

  • Mahalia Jackson is really laying on the honey in this song with a very light, gentle approach relative to her belting reserve. She sings as though she is leading a pre-school class in song and it is very sweet..

  • LMAO white boy on the left can't keep the beat to save his life

  • The people in the background look like penguins xD

  • The word "study" means "think about". The song is stating that she's not going to think about war or worry about war anymore.

  • No one can sing like Mahalia!!

  • When I was a boy of 7 ears old I used to go to the library with my mother an I would listen to records, you used to sit at a tasble with a record player and large headphone plugged in. I would always take out at least one Mahalia Jackson record and listen.....we only had so much time so I had to be judicious in my choices. I would had several albums in my cache but once Mahalia started that was usually it! I would listen to her over and over.....this was in 1972 Chicago and I was a white boy....

  • Gosh, I wish they could find someone like her on American Idol, then I might start watching it again. She was one of a kind.

  • those poor people around her looked like they didn't have the first idea how to handle what she was laying down or what shape to put their bodies in or what the hell to do with themselves, lol.

  • @dean0waterz

That's a pretty funny comment. How observant!

  • @dean0waterz

That is right, they were just there to be part of the film and stand next to her. Maybe it would have be more clever to let her sing alone, but so what? They're not the same culture, not the same church but i'm sure they liked it and they took the vibe (which must be something to stand next to her singing)

    It's all about sharing.

  • @dean0waterz lol so true!!

  • @dean0waterz it's probably choreographed, they are all moving exactly the same, lol at 0:18 the guy on the right looks around and notices everyone else is patting their hands. but beside the point, this is a nice clip, love Mahalia!!

  • @dean0waterz LMAO! so true

  • @dean0waterz In many churches, "dancing" or "moving" to Gospel music was frowned upon, so maybe they weren't sure how to react ... after a little while, they relax and move in rhythm ... My first concert in a Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA was quite a musical/spiritual experience!

  • @dean0waterz You shouldn't pick o those poor white people - they can't help it if they ain't got no rhythm.

  • @Tristansout I was going to argue this, but damn, that one guy is ahead of the beat. Ugh.

  • @dean0waterz OMG just read your post, that's so............... funny and so right on the money ,you'd make a great commentator

  • look at the guy to the left lol

  • I have always LOVED Mahalia.

  • Thanks for sharing these videos with us Emeless...I needed this today!!

  • i love her..lord knows i do

  • Thanks for the post. I want to live in a country where beautiful voices like Mahalia Jackson's are what the world hears from us.......

  • Nat King Cole with guitar?! Never seen and never heard before!!!

  • what a voice, what a woman, and what a swing...thanks from Cologne

  • she sure could sing I love Mahalia Jackson. Thanks for posting this

  • I love Mahalia!!!

  • Beautiful!

  • Wow! I love how she sings.

  • Yeeeeeeeeees!!!!!

  • love miss jackson....she is the original gospel singer

  • great voice!

  • My little girl just got a kick out of discovering she has the same name as 'a lady who can sing sooo good' (to quote her words). I'm glad she appreciates great music! :)

  • I never knew Nat King Cole played guitar

  • LEGEND

  • I think people who say Aretha was a better gospel singer than this woman must have their ears plugged or something because NO ONE has ever sung Gospel music like this she is the best without question!

  • AWESOME !!!

May ♥love♥ and His Grace be with you all,

    Steven

  • you go Mahalia you are my sister in the Lord.

  • there's a saying here in the Hawaiian Islands and along with the Natives... If you sing with such voice the Mountains will listent and echo back their praises" I love you Miss Mahalia the voice of Heaven...

  • Such a great voice

  • wonderfull, it's was the gold time... rythm and blues ..

  • Wonderful

  • Mahalia Jackson and Nat "King" Cole are two of my favorite performers. Love it! Awesome video!

  • So many great voices and musicians came from New Orleans: Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Fats Domino, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edmond Dede, Shirley Verrett, Debria Brown, Allen Toussaint, the Neville Brothers, Moses Hogan, Ellis, Wynton and the Marsalis Family. Thank God for the city of New Orleans! Bless you boys and GEAUX SAINTS!!!!

  • Dr John, I believe, also hails from New Orleans

  • I've never heard of any of those people...

  • @Yessacmidnight

    Now you have lol :)

  • what a voice what a legend

  • This is it!

  • SEMPLICEMENTE BELLO!

  • @poesia2009 i remember this song when iwas about 10 now iam 61

  • @608duke Ok

  • @poesia2009 :)

  • brings always so much happiness to my days..:)

  • I didn't know Nate King Cole played guitar. That looks like an old Gibson guitar.

  • Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.rev;4;8. Thank You Jesus.

  • Fantastic, but it's simply too short.

  • I feel like it was homogenized for white TV. This performance fits with the pop music of the mid 60s. not the negro spirituals of the 1800's.

  • Study war no more

  • Mahalia Jackson-is the BEST!

  • What a wonderful melody!!

  • This is my favorite gospel song. It's sad that Mahalia Jackson turned down so much money to go mainstream, she stayed true to the gospel. I love it.

  • @kgchris I don't think its sad...there's nothing sad about a person staying true to their faith. She certainly could have made more money by going mainstream...but she wouldn't have been happier. They're rare...but there are people who have that kind of faith...I'm not one of them...but I'm glad they exist.

  • looks like Andy Williams to the far right?

  • what are those folks doing on the background overshadowing the singer?!!?!?!!!?!

  • LOVE IT

  • Thanks Eme.

Those 4 people behind her are distracting me :).

  • WOW WOW !!!!! SISTER GIRL CAN SING

  • Yes she can! Thanks to all for watching and leaving comments!

  • @xosero Yes she can!!! Thats Mahalia Jackson just sayin.

  • Love the Jazzy effect . !

  • It's amazing how she spun that jazzy effect! She was a great entertainer, and she did it all for God.

  • Her, Ella, Aretha, LaVerne Baker, Ruth Brown and Sister Rosetta Thorpe should have made a bloody good song toagther :P

  • beautiful song .. i just had to look it up after my grandmother sang it to me

  • She had such power in her voice. Power and breath control. She could have been the best opera singer or blues singer hands down. She was THE singer.

  • I feel like such a failure for never hearing this beautiful before. Im a singer and i have never heard a voice like hears before. She is great!

  • : )

  • Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She will always be the uncontested "Queen of Gospel".

  • AMEN..Enough said

  • @hbellinger18 Rosetta Tharpe

  • @nickman8559 Sister Rosetta Tharpe has a strong set of pipes her on her as well, but she also sang the blues Mahalia sang only gospel. But people like Mahalia, Rosetta Tharpe, and Clara Ward will always stand alone when it comes to "GOSPEL SINGING"

  • Exceptional and Beautiful Lady - Mahalia Jackson. I heard, still hear and will hear your spirituals again. From Africa When we, as children, enjoyed so many African-american songs (eg Sam Cooke's "The Answer My Friend, is blowing in the Wind") to America and our understanding even becomes deeper.

  • Sam Cooke didn't write The Answer My Friend..." A white, Jewish midwestern guy, Bob Dylan wrote Blowing in the Wind.

  • Thanks for the information.

  • Wonderfull. Mahalia Rocks.

  • i wonder what her vocal range was

  • Contralto

  • Bravo brother for jazz music playlist

  • we're still studying war sadly Mahalia, but no one is paying attention, they are too worried about their 401ks while the war rages on.

  • It was beautiful to see the great nat king cole introduce mahalia jackson

  • lol the white people are so stiff

    great voice!

  • That's how we do.

  • That's because they don't have it in their soul, haha

  • What an amazing, anointed talent.

  • Definately amazing.

  • absolutely amazing

  • Magnifique!!!!!!!

  • wow! What a beautiful voice!

  • One of my all time favorites. This performance and the one she did with Dinah (which sadly is no longer on youtube) are my two favorite live versions of this song.

  • love the words, "I am going lay down my sword and shield down by the riverside, aint goin to study war no more" if only

  • To be able not to study war of any kind is a wonderful thought. Think about all the disagreements that people, countries and even children have when it comes to blows and bombs. To be able to never have to fight for civil rights and human justice or even just a good meal or enjoy the comforts of your own home would be grand. That is why I like those lyrics too!

  • I looooove this song, had it stuck on my brain for a day after my music teacher showed it for me when we studied music history

  • wow. ihre stimme ist soo schön!! und der song ist einfach umwerfend. ein echter ohrwurm =) Thx fürs hochladen :D

    Lg Caro <3

  • This song is beautiful. Her voice is purely angelic!

  • ohh this song is so cute xD

  • I love singing this :)

  • this is too beautiful

  • how sweet is this voice!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful!

I want my Harp tone to sound like Mahalia's voice...

The vibrato on her voice as well, it comes from deep inside.

That is tone.Imagine what she sounded like in real life.

'Whole Sister Tharpe thing going on about 2 months ago, what's authentic?'

Going for that tone,Laney T20 tube 4x10 and???

    Haha.

    Beautiful, Mahalia.

    x

  • The best ever Gospel singer. I can mind going to the 'Band of Hope Mission Hall' as a kid and singing most of the hymns she sung. Years later when I heard her singing them it brought back memories and was a real pleasure to hear them sung so well by Mehalia. Still listen to her now as it is good to have your spirit lifted and be reminded of the Saviour.

  • i could almost start believing in god, she was a great singer, almost tops aretha

  • she is better than aretha

  • i love her

  • thanks for posting. very talented

  • she´s so wonderful!

  • Wow. One of the worlds great talents sings about hope and salvation and people manage to make a racial debate out of it. Pathetic.

  • she song for Jesus and only for Jesus!!!

  • that's the first time i've seen white people stand BEHIND a black singer for that time. that's love

  • you just had to make this a race thing, dincha! I guess her singing didn't really touch you or you would not even have noticed.

  • omg, of course her voice touched me. who hasn't been touched by it? i'm just not mentioning the elephant in the room on how spectacular her voice is.

  • No doubt, still the greatest gospel singer ever!! I also love Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who is the only other player in that league.

  • YES! I thought I was the only one who noticed that. It's all so fascinating!

  • When we see with our soul and respond with our heart judgements of any kind will not carry any weight. Mahalia makes my spirit soar regardless of my heritage. Thank you very much.

  • She bridged the gap and brought ALL people together with her music. I have albums of hers that I bought as a kid. And I'm a "whitey". She's the greatest gospel singer ever.

  • the white folks are actually clapping on time!(i bet they're timing it);)

  • That was pretty funny!!! Ha Ha

  • yeah white folks are not as dumb as you may think huh? They can actually clap on time!!! Rolling eyes Now

  • i´m white but i have humor... you roll your eyes to eternity dick brain

  • Not only do you NOT have humor you are with out class

  • If they put all of Mr. Coles tv shows on tv, they'd have millions tuning in for the best music ever, and the young people could see what really good music is.

  • Sister Rosetta Tharpe aint got nothing on this version

  • I think Mahalia is by far the greatest gospel singer of all time but I disagree that this version is beter than Sister Rosetta's. I actually prefer Rosettas cos it seems more authentic to me. When I watch this video I can't help but feel that Mahalia has "cleaned it up" a little in terms of timing and dynamics so it's more acceptable to the white audience. I have a version on CD of Mahalia doing the same song in the more traditional "shoutin" style and that eclipses Rosettas version for sure.

  • Actually I just looked at the version that Mahalia does with Dinah Shaw here on Youtube and that's more like what I call a great version

  • So you're saying white people could not appreciate the real Mahalia Jackson? that she normally did not have white people in her audience or buying her records? I suppose now you're going to say that she made two versions of every record, and white people bought the cleaned up versions? sigh.

  • Actually I'm not saying any of those things, please refrain from putting words in my mouth. Thankyou.

  • you said "Mahalia has "cleaned it up" a little in terms of timing and dynamics so it's more acceptable to the white audience".

  • oh hush you know white ppl cant handle all that soul!

  • it's not better or worse, it's just different. why must everything always be put on the same scale?!

  • Please feel free to show me where I said either version was better!? I said "I prefer" the more traditional shoutin' style, but I am by no means arrogent enough to presume my preferences make something universally better or worse.

  • you said "I disagree that this version is beter than Sister Rosetta's. I actually prefer Rosettas cos it seems more authentic to me." And then you say that the version you own at home of a more "authentic" Mahalia is much better than Rosetta's version. So you said it twice.

  • The emphasis in my post is on the words "on the same scale", meaning "only one variable: good/bad".

  • Mahalia Jackson - whitey couldn't hold you down!!

  • is that the best comment you could come up with. You opened your mouth and proved yourself a fool

  • hahah, yup

  • Great version of a great song!

  • Sick! that was a sweet guitar right at the beginning.

  • Gotta Love it! Love the version..

  • LOL! They were there because Mahalia was asked to join them in singing a medley of American music while being a guest on the Nat King Cole Show.

  • What's the point of the white people?

  • Lol Lol Lol. Ha ha ha ha ha. I was thinking the same thing. I thought they'd at least be the doo wop people.

  • I think they were stunned and mesmerized by Mahalia's presence. Them white folks are Thespians thinking... "How can I command this stage?" When she (accompanied by the Holy spirit) came on stage they probably said, "Dang!.. I surrender!"

  • .. I surrender!

  • Whee I sing this in Jazz choir!

  • beautiful!

  • I am discovering this great singer. Thanks for this videos from Spain.

  • Her smile is so contagious!! I couldn't help it! I was constantly smiling throughout this video. That's why I love Mahalia, she was such a humble singer, but with such a great voice! also, as a bonus..She smiled a lot <3 Anyway..how come she only sang for 1 minute in this video??

  • Mahalia was asked to join Nat and his singers on his show to sing a spiritual in a segment about american music. Mahalia had song two other songs that evening.

  • OMG our class sung this at a concert!!!

  • Absolutely wonderful. And delivered with class that only Mahalia can give!

  • Great footage this, Mahalia was a fabulous singer, especially on her earlier recordings. I like a wide range of music from folk to heavy metal and I love nothing better than a great expressive singer. Mahalia is one of the few singers who can take my breath away, give me goosebumps, butterflies in my stomach and shivers down my spine all at the same time. She sings with a passion and beauty that very few come even close to. The choirs of heaven must sound even better since Mahalia joined them!

  • Aw...what a beautiful sentiment. I do agree with you!.

  • mahalia jackson i hope you keep sing up there ok tell god hi ok

  • People sure don't sing like this anymore..classic!
