Perfection is the only word that can describe what Gruberova made in this video.

The line ascending like curlining incense the the high B at 3:10 is so hypnotic. I remember hearing Gruberova for the first time doing this and it still knocks me out how she stretches up to the B and just floats. It may be cheating vocally, but so so beautiful.

@gustopheles to get techincal, she is sliding up to the high note, without vibrato. If she sang the interval up to the high note with vibrato that would have been a true portamento. OK, so its a minor point. The effect is still beautiful, but she slims down the high note by singing it "off" the breath and that is a kind of cheat. Minor quibble, and part of Gruberova's charm is she has her very own style and that tiny whistle tone is one of her calling cards.

Je suis assez stupéfait de sa bonne diction française malgré l'incompréhension du début du 2ème couplet : "Oû va la jeune indue" ou peut-être dit elle : "Oû va la jeune fille"! Dans le 1er couplet elle vocalise lié comme Callas! Ce qu'elle fait est assez brillant bien que le contre-mi final ne soit pas juste!!!

car Si la soprano slovaque est en "terre d'élection" (clarté, hauteur d'émission, aisance technique, style) la Divine est en difficulté" surtout en "live" (premier mi escamoté, piqués aproximatifs et vocalisation contrainte). Son art était ailleur je crois.

Beloved Gruberova. For me one of the best Ou va la jeune Indoue I heard. She truly is the absolute and superior master of her voice. Everytime I hear and see hear singing tears come into my eyes.
