my rooster died last summer at 12, of old age. after he died we hatched the last batch of his eggs and got us a new rooster, so I don't consider 6 old. BTY just got my door, hope to have it installed asap.
what if you print the instructions onto the template would be cheaper and people would be less likely to mess thing up thinking its scrap. Just an idea might not be worth it at all but it makes seance to me.
I love it, great Idea, I hope you sell a bunch of them... for those who don't have electricity to the Coop I would use a 12 volt motorcycle battery and use a small 12 volt to 110volt inverter and a cheap solar charger and you good for at least 12 to 18 months...
how do you get your chickens so calm around people? i have 2 americana hens that i've had since they were chicks and they still don't let me just walk up to them and pet them
So it isn't a problem if the door closes and your chickens are still outside, then. Great way to feed the foxes, wolves, and other predators I must say.
I am new to chickens, but i think those are Buff Orphingtons. they have a nice pad. we are lucky to have a powered finished building that was an old horse stall, and ijsut sent this video on to my hubby to inspire him to get oen of the doors and he can install that in a heartbeat! nice!
Love the idea of it, however we don't have power in our coop.(we live in the south and the chickens don't have to have a heat lamp so we don't have electric running to the coop) so we need one that can run off a battery.
I love my automatic chicken door! It was very easy to install! I bought it 2 months ago! It works exactly how the video says it does! I highly recommend it!
@MFRoosy16 i'd recommend just getting a new rooster, 6 years is a long life span. im not sure as to what the exact name of the chicken is, but around here we call them brown buffs. I have about 10 of the plain whites and 10 brown buffs. rooster we have is a leghorn. if you are going to raise chickens for eggs to eat, then you dont need a rooster. if you are raising them to have more chickens then you will also want to get an incubator and automatic egg turner. slaughter at a year - 2 years old.
@cecpuman yeah but roosy is just so old.. so healthy though.. indeed hes lived a good life. he has had some good friends in the past but i like to get him so before he just goes out with a bang but yeah i wanna order like 10 of these brown buffs?
@MFRoosy16 idk about ordering them, if you have a tractor supply co. around where you live, you might be able to order some from them, although im not sure what they will be called there. i think their official name is buff orpington. you will want a place where they can eat plenty of grass. expect eggs around 6 months of age. rooster can fertilize a single chicken for a week on one setting for all eggs she will lay that week.
@MFRoosy16 also where ever you have your "pen" or area where they will be will have to be moved every so often if you want them to be able to eat grass and such. they will do what we call "burning" to the ground. essentially they will kill all grass and other edible plants in that area for an extended period of time, if you don't have a covered pen then you will need to make sure to regularly clip their wings, here is a vid on how youtube.com/watch?v=7Hr9ioWrmis
@cecpuman i know that. i have lived on a valley farm my whole life still do. i just want those brown buffs. they seem friendly. =) yeah i know they kill the heck out of the grass....
i agree with MrCrasychicken, before it can be considered a finished product it really does need some type of safety to prevent the door from closing while a chicken is standing under it. if it had a safety i would purchase one asap.
thats an awsome coop - I'm about to build one in the next month. you've thought of everything in your design - It looks good too. I really like the cladding on the downspouts.
its common for people to put a ramp or in this case a step for the chickens to get in or out of the coop, the chickens dont need it but it helps rodents and such. A chicken can jump a foot or so to get in the door, with no problem.
James - what are the vertical dimensions of your sliding door. I am designing a small coop and would like to incorporate your door but need to know how tall my walls need to be. Thank you - great product!
Nice video - thinking about getting one. The kids are as gentle as your chickens!

@MrCrasychicken It just doesn't happen. It closes very slowly and has very little weight to it. The chickens hear it and get out of the way...
