Just realized that the opening riff, general groove and production sound very similar to Peter and Gordon's "I Go To Pieces". Peter Asher of the duo was Paul McCartney's girlfriend's brother at the time. Perhaps he was influenced.
Raikaage is correct. This was originally slated for the Help album.
Rubber Soul was an album that was a bit more intimate and far less effected with verb and delay than this track contains.. McCartney and Lennon gave this to recording artist PJ Proby who had a minor hit with it. Personally, I really like the track. I thought it was one of the gems that stood out on the Anthology discs. I'm glad a Beatles version still exists.
This is from the Help sessions. Get the bootleg CDs called "Help Studio Sessions Back To Basics" and "A Hard Day's Night Studio Sessions Back To Basics". It's great to see them in their element on those records.
A bit Roy Orbison-ish, like what John probably envisiged originally for 'Please Please Me' song by all accounts. I like this but can see why Paul said it didn't quite work for him. Such perfectionists they were
Love this song !!!! I can't believe the Beatles chose NOT to release this song either on their HELP record or on a B-side 45 rpm. Instead it found it's way to PJ Proby's inferior version. The Beatles one only took 31 years for it to be commercially released but even then it was mixed in mono (but the reverb effect was superb).
Hey in 14 months it will be 50 years since their first hit that launched them to the world with "Love me Do". Maybe we'll get some more video and audio stuff.

sounds very "beach boys," what with all those super-reverbed, tight harmonies...

@johnnyterrible True.... I dont think people realize how much The Beatles respected The Beach Boys
