WELL FYI GRANDPA JONES ERNEST TUBBS ROY ADERHOLT WERE ALL GOOD Friends and Ernie as we knew him an Ganpa Roy Were Cousins so ye can imaging why we love ole grandpa jones and hee haw was alway on every saturday night at our home
And here is the best one. Above Grandpa Jone's cabin was a large waterfall. A young girl fell off the waterfall, and it was quite the scandal around Blowing Rock and Graggtown as the young girl was staying with Grandpa Jones at his cabin. There are still a few folks in Blowing Rock who remember Grandpa and his time near Blowing Rock. The Graggs should be compensated for all the music Grandpa Jones stole from them over the years.
Grandpa Jones was not one of the straightest people who ever lived. Grandpa Jones stole music from the Gragg family near Blowing Rock, North Carolina over a period of several years. Grandpa even bought a cabin on Pilot Ridge, near Gragg Town, so he could be near the true masters of bluegrass. He recorded the Graggs music and took it to the Grand Ole Opry.
I sort of hate people running down someone dead. Grandpa Jones was the straightest Star that ever walked. You Guys have to understand this was done in early 50's TV was new Cameras were AWFUL so Peoples eyes looked like they were drunk or high when they wasn't ,not that a lot of Stars didn't drink they DID but Grandpa wasn't one of them,He was totally against Alcohol Drugs,Stealing He was a Tee Totaler Str8 Shooter.. RIP Grandpa We Love you!!
My dad played music with old Louis Marshall Jones and says he was a good Christian man to be around. Now, that's from someone who hung around him in person and I'll take my old dad's word for it against anyones.
i'm only 33, but remember watchin' HEE-HAW with my father during the late 70's early 80's. It brought back alot of memories watchin' this. We would sit toghther and watch everytime it came on. My father loved country music and alot of those late, great nashville stars. I also loved watchin' it with him. We should try to resurrect HEE-HAW somehow. I'm sure there's a way to do it
First of all Grandpa Jones was TOTALLY AGAINST ALCOHOL DRUGS or ANYTHING Illegal!.This Video was made in 1952/55 era, of course some RUDE Person like you wouldn't understand but TV only came to the Public in 1949 Cameras were REALLY BAD, I'm friends with several Nashville Stars Grandpa Jones was a Christian,it makes Me Mad that some person who doesn't know JACK about him would write something based on a poor quality Video. Most People LOVED him go someplace else if you want to assasinate someone
I can't believe you would think I was being disrespectful to Grandpa Jones. I would never do such a thing. Grandpa Jones was a great man and great musician. His "Banjo Am The Instrument" inspired me to go out and buy and banjo and learn it. I never once stated I thought he did or even hinted at the fact that he might be "baked." It was a joke. Didn't you notice I wrote "Pardon me and RIP Grandpa Jones.." I grew up on Hee Haw..its an institution and so is Grandpa Jones.
not trying to start a fight but DannyD...on here that's how some people pass off an offensive remark. I understood what you meant but i could also see how it was offensive because some people don't mean the apology that proceeds the remark.
This id from the real glory days of the Opry, whne it was more than just a hat act, when the performers were really, really good, Webb Pierce, the Carters, Grandpa JOnes, Stringbean, Chet Atkins...
Sounds like Chet Atkins playing finger style guitar off camera. Grandpa Jones had the same act his whole career. My dad told me once that Grandpa Jones looked the same when he was a young man.
My young son loved anything by Grandpa Jones and we often had trouble finding any of his recordings. I remember we wrote him a letter once on behalf of my son and Grandpa sent him an autographed postcard and a lovely 45 RPM record. What a thoughtful gesture and what a wonderful man!
8 More Miles to Loueyville, Great song, He was my hero. If I could only play like him. I got a typed postcard from Grandpa about a week before he Passed on. I have about 8 tunes from Grandpa tabbed out for Frailing Banjo.
@OzBros The bass player is Ernie Newton - probably the top session man in Nashville at that time . The brush bass technique you describe is something he is widely thought to have introduced.
My folks said that Grandpa started "doing" "Grandpa" back when he was a young buck starting out. Is this true?

Thanks! Can someone explain the technique that the bass player Has? It appears to be a brush in his hand and a surface is provided for percussion.

he played pretty much anything...any stringed instrament...and he played it good
ffej980 4 years ago 3
In his earlier days he played a lot of guitar. That's how you know this is from the 1950's (probably early 50's).

Wow!
The man playing the stand-up bass has a drum-head attached to it and he's plucking the bass strings with a wire brush in his hand.
Now that is unique!

That's quite common in bluegrass actually, sounds good though.
