Other works may excel this in depth of thought and knowledge of human nature: other books may rival it in originality and size; but, for hopeless and incurable veracity, nothing yet discovered can surpass it. This, more than all its other charms, will, it is felt, make the volume precious in the eye of the earnest reader; and will lend additional weight to the lesson that the story teaches.
Preface to First Edition. Penguin Publisher. London, August 1889.
The chief beauty of this books lies not so much in its literary style, or in the extent and usefulness of the information it conveys, as in its simple truthfulness. Its pages form the record of events that really happened. All that has been done is to colour them; and, for this, no extra charge has been made. George and Harris and Montmorency are not poetic ideals, but things of flesh and blood - especially George, who weighs about twelve stone.
You can feel England and all it represented in those glorious day's. As usual, George is feeling he has every decease under the sun. This book still makes me laugh too this day
I can so identify with these men. I myself have done virtually no work for years and yet I feel so weary. An hour in bed of an afternoon help somewhat followed by coffee and toast before I relax for the remains of the day with a cigarette. I look at the garden and sigh, Its needs mowing and weeding but alas I am to tired to do, other than look and sigh. I sleep well enough but still feel tired on awakening to more coffee and toast. I have every malady known to man or woman. Alas I must rest.
i tried to read this book in unabridged english, but though amusing, i found it too boring. listening to it on audiobook seems a perfect idea. does anyone know where i can get a full version?
Although I adore the television adaptation--and am intrigued by this Laurie bit--I would argue for folks first giving the book a go. Just in this brief five-minute bit, several excellently hilarious early pages are entirely skipped over. Another thing--actually, it's free, via GoogleBooks.
This is one of my favorite books. The sequel (Three Men on the Bummel), is also a lot of fun. It's great to see the same characters doing another trip later, after two of them have married and had children.
Apparently there was a 1975 TV version of "Three Men in a Boat" starring Tim Curry as Jerome and Michael Palin as Harris. I'd love to see it, but it's apparently not available on DVD.
I've been a martyr to my own out-of-order liver since earliest infancy! Chief amongst the symptoms has ever been "a general disinclination to work of any kind."
:)
Some blessed soul has now posted, on YouTube, the made-for-television programme of which you speak.
I found an old simplified version, from the 50s, of this book in a bookcase in a peculiar shop. The book was a school version, and it was truly bewitching. Mr. Laurie makes it even more so. His kids are lucky who had him as a bed-time-story-reader.
I just so much love this book. So amazingly humourous. Being a non-native English speaker, this is one of the first novels written by an English author I read as a school boy. I will like to watch a film/TV adaptation of this book.
It's not bad, but nobody has ever read this better than the excellent Jeremy Nicholas.

Try the library, perhaps? Or eBay, naturally!
