I'll tell you why it "didn't work". The kind of people who volunteer to be on this kind of show aren't exactly the same kind of people who think about others and form into good teams. Their personalities didn't predispose them to helping others, they just wanted to have their own needs taken care of. Suffer for a short time then get paid to not work for the rest of your life? When I visited Shakhty just north of Rostove I saw real pain there. One poor kid was eating crumbs outside a church. He claimed to be a guard but his pot emblem on his hat gave that away. I still tipped him. I wish now I had taken him to lunch.

Here in the UK we have had political martyrs in prison that have gone on Hunger Strike.
I.e. refused to eat food and starve to death unless some political demand was met.
However the British Prime minister at the time Mrs Thatcher said tough and 10 died in jail through starvation after about 60 days.
