You sound like Rush more than anything else any one has ever said, esp more than Primus. Maybe people are just picking up on les's influence from Geddy himself. People say adding a guitar would ruin fingersmoran, but taht's rubbish. i think if you had someone with chops like lifeson, it could be amazing

Not so much. Bass can always serve dual function as rhythm if the guitar is playing lead. MOst B-D-G trios sound a little thin anyway when the guitarist is playing lead. As long as the guitarist knew how to kick back and not take over the song, it would be cool, and the bass would still shine. They do have a vid posted where they are playing with a guitarist. It's up to the men themselves, i support their band in any incarnation

Sure, the bass doesn't have to just hump a note for five minutes, but I don't think there's any need for three-note bass chords when you have a guitarist, since the guitar sounds better with the chords. The bass can still really groove without chords. In fact, it might be able to groove more, and add more depth to the song.

This is coming from a bassist, too, so don't think I believe in the guitar taking over a song.

that's chill, i was just a little confused as to what exactly you meant. (and maybe about the proper usage of There and Their). My favorite thing about bass is the power it has to blend into the background and then raise up and take control when it wants; then sink back into the mix

I'm a bassist too, just so you know where I'm coming from.

I agree with you that you need to draw the line between the two instruments, but look at the band Rush; Lifeson plays his rhythmic chords while Geddy plays his melodic basslines, which is what could be considered normal for them. But, when it is time for a guitar solo, especially on their newer albums, Geddy will play rhythm chords while Lifeson solos on a melody, and I think that is because they are a 3 man act.
