  • if you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, when your going hard or have been running for a long distance it doesnt get me enough air

  • Does the hand over the mouth thing actually work??

  • I hope this video works because i have to run on tuesday but yes Thank You for the info about the side pains this is what i was looking for! :)

  • zoolander

  • "if u get some side pains down here in your side" *gestures to side"

    no way peter...

  • this is ridiculous, everybody already knows that.

  • @BarboTV Arrogance is a sickness.

  • i thought the side pains were cramps from drinking too much water or drinking water too fast

  • @2dittoz yea same.

  • @2dittoz That's my basic assumption. Since I already have the eat/drink/wait 2 hrs before I run routine down, I never get cramps anymore.

  • wow, amazing intros (sarcasm)

  • Am I the only one who thinks this guy looks like an unbelievable douche?

  • he looks like the guy from accepted!

  • ok that make since the warm air will relax it but i doubt thats enough just to get it to go away

i can swivil my body and have a sidestich

  • shouldnt he be giving tips on how to suck dick or get it up his ass??, he's prolly more of an expert on that

  • This bloke is a complete tool

  • peter is above us, peter wears thee ULTIMATE DOUCHE-COLLAR

  • Yeah this collar's popped!

  • Was I the only one that heard at the first of this vid "Hi, my name is Peter, and i love to see males running naked."? i mean it may just be me but im pretty sure i heard that...

  • cupping your hands over your face like that is great way of limiting the amount of oxygen you inhale whilst increasing the amount of carbon dioxide. Great tip dick head.

  • why does expert village suck so much?

  • This is retarded

  • In the description, it says he's a lifeguard. I watched this for running...

  • F expert village hate them

  • @frostylala141 If u have asthma u should breathe deep through your nose, this way you are less likely to have an asthma attack. I'm 16 and an asthmatic also since I was 13 so I know how you feel. I'm going to do cross country I've never done distance runs before. I was on track and was a sprinter. Can you give me some advice on running techniques for cross country?

  • so the stitch/side pain is due to cold air?

  • THIS DUDE IS FUCKIN TOOL....... WHAT IDIOTIC TIPS...

  • @sausageNmash1990

    u mad?

  • wow when i run i breathe through my nose only and ima really fast runner..but sadly theres some new girls in my age group who r good runners too -..- and i have asthma ;( i usually get short of breath should i breathe through my nose and mouth plz answer the cross country is next friday! ;(

  • Ever since I can remember, I've been poppin' my collar.

If you have a side stitch/cramp, stop breathing in and out on your right foot strike because that jostles the innards on your right side something fierce, and since the right side is where your Liver and Gallbladder are located, it's very painful. Try breathing in and out to the strike of your left step.

  • yea.... no

  • But don't try to stop inhaling through the nose, you will naturally breathe through both the mouth and nose if you open your mouth. That's what I meant in my previous comment. I'm just trying to stop people from thinking they have to breathe one way to be fast.

  • I think it is stupid to tell people how to breathe. You can run more efficiently by inhaling and exhaling through your mouth. Although I will not tell people how to breathe while running, I suggest at least trying it out. It is most important to be comfortable or even more, FASTER, when running competitively. I give this video one star.

  • @papayashocka but in the long run (lol no pun intended) looking like an idiot might help.

  • Mcdonald's ad in the beggining, haha ironic...

  • Breathing in through the nose and out the mouth is a textbook way of trying to train your body to learn rhythmic respiration, and is therefore tremendously over-applied. The body doesn't need to learn how to breathe; it gets good at it by working how it feels the best, and about 99% of modern harriers have come to realize breathing in through the nose is one of the most uncomfortable methods out there. Most go in and out both the mouth and nose. Keep all passages open, its common sense really.

  • No matter how i breath im going to be dead when i finish!

  • @papayashocka yeah i had that prob yesterday for the last mile in the race so i just tried running with it

  • some people says walk?

why would u walk in cross country running?

  • thank u

  • this guy is the opposite of a cross country runner and is completely retarded

  • omg i hate this text thing on the screen and ty for showing me what to do after i get side pain

  • omg i hate this text thing on the screen

  • idk why but i seriously find alot of expertvillage videos seem pretty bad or mostly disagreed with

  • nice tips this helps :)

  • So rather than sucking it up and run through the stitches, he's telling you to ruin your form and use your arms, which should be used to continue driving your legs (for a whole minute I might add), to breathe limited warm air.

    Yes, that makes complete sense.

    Cross Country = Pain

If you can't handle pain, then don't do xc. Simple as that.

  • It was so dumb and why am I going to do this during a race? ugh

  • i dont very much like this video... it kinda sucks i dont give a shit if im not breathing right ill push through it and finish same goes if i have a side pain

  • Comment removed

  • awesome vid, peter! you really explained why breathing is one of the most important factors when running cross country!

  • My question is...how about people with asthma?? What's the proper way of breathing while running for people who have asthma?

  • I'm starting cross country and it's my first year.this is really helpful to me seeing that's why I can't really improve my time.I appreciate it:)

  • @papayashocka hahahahahahahaha....he is trying to sufficate us

  • guys, im a senior in high school, i did track this year(which was my first sport) and im in-decision about whether to do football or cross country. What should I do? Im 6 foot 3 and have long legs and weigh about 165 pounds. I might be able to get good at football . . . oh shit, . . . what should I do?????

  • that stupid because the whole point of aerobic training is to increase oxygen uptake to your body. if you blunt the oxygen uptake your muscles will never perform well and that could lead to injury quick. if you have a side pain slow down your pace or walk altogether. side stitches come from lack of oxygen why would you blunt the oxygen uptake?

  • @0587dave that guy sounded pretty professional to me. why question it.

  • @Danjs1993 Question it because its ridiculous. First he wants you to limit your oxygen intake, then he suggests that side stitches are caused by cold. He's not fit to give advice because he's no professional.

  • @beaster29 ok

  • @0587dave the reason you get a stitch is cause of the lack of oxygen yes but the idea is to decrease your breathing rate to make you take slower deeper breaths. doing so will actually make you take in more oxygen.

  • @xbartosx also u get it from beathing on a prefferd foot so change the foot you take a breath on it will go awaY

  • Damn, that collar has POP!

  • do you know how hard it is to breathe in from your nose and out from your mouth when running at intensity.

  • C00L but not as cool as my moves i do in chicago for parkour, dont dare look at my video, otherwise you will be... amazed!!!!!!!!! (lol acting like you know about CC)

  • This guy is annoying. Does Expert Village pay actors or something? Their "advice" is usually inaccurate and their "athletes" seen scripted...

  • hang on ive seen this guy before......oh yes on all the other expert village videos what a suprise ! pmsl

  • why did you point to your left side when talking about the running side pain , its always in the right side , its always the liver man ,

  • Thanks man

  • thank you for the tips oh by the way your very handsome hope you message me back(:

  • @210b3auti3

    woah there!

  • Peter pumpkin eater knows nothing and has never run Cross Country. Where do they get these experts?? What a JOKE!!!!

  • what the hell is expert village who cares about hat ? lol

  • BREATHE HOWEVER YOU WANT THERE IS NO PERFECT WAY TO BREATHE do it compfortably for gods sake.

  • 0:45 darth vador

  • UN-POP YOUR COLLAR YOU FUCK!!!

  • @giggidy87 ever since i can remember ive been popin my colla.. popin popin my colla......hehe

  • @papayashocka true that

  • i done it today it wasnt hard i came 2 :D

  • nice tips. check out this new video on my channel. It will inspire anyone to run.

  • isnt it much better to breath through both your nose and mouth and out of your mouth?

  • it is thats what i was told

  • no...because your nose filters and warms the air...

You don't want cold air or dust particles screwing with your lungs...

  • @andreilg2 Sure it is. Which is why he is talking nonsense. I want to see him running fast and breathing in only through his nose. He'd die from suffocation if he could really do it despite his instincts.

  • @phyrad i agree

  • @andreilg2 yeah that's what i think too, you take in more air and you can out last longer

  • @andreilg2 thats what i do and its giving me no problem. seems like im suffering less as well.

  • @andreilg2 no.

  • @andreilg2 the idea is to take slow deep breaths. breathing through your nose and mouth will make people take short shallow breaths.

  • @andreilg2 No, I think you breathe in your nose and out your mouth so your mouth doesn't get all dry and stuff. Er at least that's what my coach told me.

  • @andreilg2 It's best to just breath. Heck. Breath in through your ears if you can!

  • @andreilg2 How the fuck are you going to breathe through both you dumb nigger; who gave you internets?

  • @RangersAreOPd fail troll is fail

  • @RangersAreOPd He said out of your mouth idiot

  • @RangersAreOPd Not sure if you're just being funny, but I think you're over-thinking it. People do breathe in and out both, as explained in my below statement. Andrelig2 is right. Just keep your mouth rested open when you run and your inhale enters your nostrils and your mouth. It's a very simple concept. Try it; you'll be amazed at what you can do.

  • @andreilg2 it makes more sense to do that yes because you get more air in, but its not very controlled.

  • @andreilg2 its better for the lungs to breath in through the nose and out through the mouth in cold areas, this is because the air that passes through the nose is heated from mucous and hairs in the nose to were its at a suitable range for the lungs. if u breath in through the mouth the cold air will hit the lungs and cause them to lock up a bit(causing pain during a prolonged period of time)

  • what a fag

  • cute! :)

  • hahaha is this guy implying that cold air gives you cramps?

  • @runescaperunner well their are many theories or what gives you cramps but one of them does have to do with oxygen in take. Why cold air makes a difference, i do not know because your body warms it up but maybe it's just a mental thing to do while the pain goes away

  • 16:41...no biggie

  • yea MOST high school runners run them...im ihsa our saces are 3 miles... the only race that was 5k was the wakeashaw invitaional were i got a 20:01...omg those hills dominated me

  • I already knew this. lol

  • I ran the 3K with and I got the 4th 2x

  • hey thats not true and those are not good running tips!! sry but i run Xc and people on my team and myself tried that and it didnt work!!!!!!

  • it only works if it's cold out...

  • My school is IRHS in ARizona. Our best runner is 14:30, and behind him, we got about 10-15 guys who run under 17 minutes. Then a few in 18, 19, and 20. Same with our girls. So we are state champs for both boys and girls! w00t

  • Oops, forgot to mention... all of our freshman are 17min and under. Nxt yr, we are getting 24 new freshman, and they all run under 18. :D

  • what does IRHS stand for? cus i remember when my school went to the Dos Pueblos invitational race there was an Arizona school there. We won the race fr the 6th year in a row btw! :D

  • Ironwood Ridge high school

  • Adalite. Today the runners have to run under 14:00, if they realy dream to be champions one day! There are Junior African runners, running 5k under 13:30.

  • cool....who gives a shit

  • Some dude named Colby Lo in my district ran a 14:10 as a junior in the 5k and I raced a guy named Craig lutz in the 5k xc meet yesterday...he ran a 14:50...and i ran a gay 15:30 haha

  • Hi my name is peter........

    .... And i'm gay..

  • im just watching these vidz because tomorrow i have my meet at apark :D

  • uhh ttcole most high school races are 5k.. not 3m.. so what are you talking about. and yes the .1 difference can add a lot of time.

  • 3 miles are almost 5 kilometers

  • yes 3 miles is ALMOST 5 k.. that almost is a lot of seconds. 18:30 for 3 miles can be 19:00 for 5k.

  • im a soph runnin 18:30 for 3m..but 2day at our conf. which is why i looked this up..i couldnt breath which made 2 guys that never passed me this year beat me..i always came in 1st for us..2day i came in 12th plc..which booted me out of a all conference runner..and now idk if i would be able to run down state.. :[

  • soph more on my team just ran 17:02 5k and our top freshman just ran 18:30 for 5k (Leesville Road High School, Raleigh NC, number 3 in da state baby!!!!![by most poles])

  • yayy for track and cross country!! <3 :)

  • i heart your not suppose to breathe throught your nose. your suppose to breathe through your mouth while running since breathing through your nose takes in less air to your lungs... but i also tried breathing through my mouth which makes my mouth dry...but helps me run more... i don't know. i guess it all depends on the person.

  • I cant breath through my nose while running. It dosent get near enough air to my lungs.

  • Comment removed

  • that last running tip was really helpful, thanx.

  • I run 6:30 min miles. My team is umm state champs for both our boys and girls team

  • how old are u son? 12, 13 yrs old, if yes then keep it up, give it all u got every practice.

  • Comment removed

  • i run a 7:31 mile our team is 6-3 though

  • keep it up, i run a 5:21 mile

  • i will im only in sixth grade but our best eighth grade runner runs a 4:57 mile

  • Lol keep it up I run a 4:36 ha

  • congrats, congrats.

  • I run a 5:51.

    Im also 6'1 170lbs. Haha.

  • im not so good. i got an 8min mile. but our team is 4-0 so far so hopefully well keep the streak alive!

  • and this guys an idiot hes trying to force the nose to mouth breathing when everyone does it differently, you guys should just go out and run and figure out which style of breathing helps the most or which is the most comfortable

  • lol i used to just do xc for lacrosse, but then i realized how much i like running and it was a hard choice b/c i was on varisty for lax and our next varsity guy for xc but i finally decided that i loved running a lot more than lacrosse so this year i decided to quit lacrosse and run year round but i hope i made the right choice, o and since everyone else is doing it... my pr is 17:24 and that was b4 i started to actually try as hard as i could.

  • Nice popped collar.

  • sophmore year my pr was 18 23

  • I know freshman that are running 16:30s. Makes me feel really sad being a sophmore and only running 17:50s lol.

  • fuck that shit.. im running a 23 minute 5k... haha

i dont really care about xc. im just getting in shape for lacrosse

  • YES YES YES this kid right here knows what im talking bout im doing the exact same thing bro

  • Hahaha dude same here. My pr is 23:05 and i'm gettin ready for lacrosse too.

  • Amen to that brother! But me for sprinting for track!

  • you don't have to follow this style of breathing...as long as it is even and controlled it doesn't necessarily need to follow this method.

  • my pr last year...16:08 as a sophomore...hopefully i break the 16 minute mark this year as a junior.

  • hahahaha, dude you guys suck, and lichnight, your brother has the record at 17:35 hahahaha, i ran faster my first race freshman year

  • I'm a natural born sprinter, but i did xc too so i guess 18:58 as my PR isn't that bad

  • i suck at running. 25:30 on a 5k

  • damn thats horrible

  • i just started running last week though so i'm outta shape. haha. i'm only a freshman.

  • lol my freshmen year my best time was like a 20:30 or something like that

  • im a freshman and i ran a 19:14 last week =]

  • my brother holds the school record of 17:35 lol thats insane

  • that's actually pretty good time for a 5K. good job. :)

  • you'll get better

  • eww

  • Wow, never would have guessed that you needed to breathe through your nose to make it go away O_o

  • how fast should i be running for a 5kilometre race.

    ?kmph

  • thx for the advice and also xxcdemon08 not all real runnerers like 30 degrees.....

  • yeah true dat!

  • personally i like it to be about 50- 60 degrees, 30 is way too cold for me, in my own opinion

  • those are good temperatures too.

i just hate being above the 70's

  • ya...but at school wheneva i have training they make us run miles in 90 degrees...which totally suks

  • ugh i hate when i have to do that.

  • im playing basketball in my freshman year in high school, and i heard that im going to do some cross country running and one problem is that i have asthma and i get that side pain when i get tired running. so if you have any other good tips let me know,it will be really helpful!

  • When you get a side stitch: Think of a song in your head it will help you concentrate more on running and the simple idea: Move from point A to point B

  • im goin to run state cross country today...thanx for the advice

  • thanks 4 the advice i'm starting track at my school monday and in p.e. when we ran a mile i was the first grl done i ran it in 5:23 and my side did hurt so maybe now it wont!

  • man idk what this guy is talking about I love the cold air and so do real xc runners.

mid 30 degrees is the best medium!

  • thank for the advise i am a x-country runner and always run early and get pain in the side i will try it tomoz thanx for the tip

  • If you worry about how you breathe, how can you possibly sleep?

    This sucks.

  • wtf is it a good idea to breath through your nose. Why not just in through the mouth and out of the mouth because its a bigger airway.

  • You need to do both. Nose breathing is actually quite effective if you get used to it.

Since the nostrils are smaller then the mouth, air exhaled through the nose creates back pressure when you exhale, slowing the air escape so the lungs have more time to extract oxygen from them. When there is proper oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange, the blood will maintain a balanced pH. If CO2 is lost too quickly, as in mouth breathing, oxygen absorption is decreased.
