"We as souls, ...." ? Is that what he said? ... Souls? ... There you have it folks. This man in not enlightened. He is clinging to an idea that gives him security, contintuity, and persistence in an unfathomable universe.

Yes,Jesus IS the SON of GOD.He was born of a virgin and GOD.Jesus himself said I am the way,you can ONLY get to the FATHER thru me.Because he was the only one found PERFECT being man/god who could open the seal.He was worthy because he lay down his life that we may have our sins forgivin and tossed into the lake of forgetfulness.Meaning once forgivin,it is as if it never happened. It is deleted from THE BOOKS god keeps on us all.U non belivers GET WITH IT.He's coming soon.R U ready?Saved?Forgivin
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins, was buried and rose again so that all who BELIEVE on Him will have eternal life in Heaven. Call upon Jesus Christ and believe on Him for eternal life!
@kassiba < G point, suffering often ends once the person has learned the lesson of empathy and compassion.
Yet another level of pain may come. All is good if one takes it in with humble and clam manner and it all makes sense sooner or later. Often rape/death/divorce etc are traumatic and wouldn't make sense for long time .. "why me ?" is asked often instead of feeling the pain and moving on.
"suffering brings me very close to god" how this is possible is that suffering brings us all very close to ourselves. Nothing puts us in touch with ourselves on an emotional level like suffering does. at that depth we can see the we and god are one and the same thing.
Ram Dass has a deep misunderstanding of the topics he attempts to teach and discuss; you can see it in his attitude and subtle body language, and the words he uses. He just doesn't have a grasp on these spiritual teachings. Watch his interview with Thich Nhat Hanh and you can see the body language interactions between them. I would strongly recommend people tune their ears to teachers such as Thay or Suzuki Roshi who have better understandings of the dharma. Just my opinion though.
It's very hard to interpret what he means after he got his stroke since it has messed with his ability to formulate language, I enjoy his earlier interviews more.
this man went through great amount of spiritual experiences. his body is worn out but learn to LOOK beyond what you see and hear on the first plane...try to Feel what is happening. See what are the colors and shapes Behind him, how he and background, sounds, and everything works together as unified essence. Learn to see everything as IDEAS behind the visible appearances.
another dude put it more succinctly, quite some time ago. To stop suffering requires the cessation of ignorance; volitional formations; consciousness; mentality-materiality; the sixfold base; contact; feeling; craving; clinging; becoming; & birth. "Through the cessation of birth, cease ageing and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain grief, and despair. Thus does this whole mass of suffering cease."
This is entirely wrong. In fact use of psychoactive plants and "drugs" in this way goes back many thousands of years. There are teachings on this in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which is the first known written record of yogic practices and which was compiled (roughly 100-500 BC) from a previous and already ancient oral tradition. It speaks directly about the use of "ausadhi" or "herbs" to achieve liberation.
@docwhammo: Because something is 2000 years old doesn't make it right. You're impressed because of an Indian name or tradition. That's just pure ignorance. Americans will buy anything if given Indian labels and origins, it pathetic. Anyway it doesn't matter if something is old, the question is does it work now? Look at the condition of a person drugged - LESS aware, wake up friend, drugs are NOT part of the real Indian teachings.
I never said I was impressed. I was responding to your comment that "buddhas abhor drugs" by giving examples of yogis that promote their use. And not just any yogi, but the most well-known yogi. You argue that Americans will buy anything with Indian labels and origins, and then later claim to know what the "real" Indian teachings are. It seems you are an example of your own idea of being "pathetic". How interesting.
@docwhammo Drugs are not the answer nor do they bring one to the answer nor reveal the answer. They degrade you. Yogi's who promote them are wrong, I don't care how well known they are. Timothy Leary had his head removed and frozen. That's drugs talking. Its not a matter of opinion. If you use, promote or support them, you're wrong. I'm an ex, I know the drill. That's the truth. And I do know "real" yogis, you have no idea. Get with it.
@GreatBigChangeComin I feel as though people who are criticizing the use of drugs alongside spiritual practice are missing what is actually happening. It is an evolution of Eastern practices that is due to the melding of Western ideas (and chemicals) with said practices. It is simply a new paradigm. Just as quantum physics is beginning to explain ideas that the mystics have been describing for millenia, drugs are confirming the revelations/experiences that many men of the spirit have had.
This man Ram Dass was such a gentle loving peaceful happy wise and kind soul. If everyone would heed a fraction of his teaching we could establish heaven on Earth.
I understand that many of you are afraid by what you say.but It's all about opposites, To know love is to know suffering and vice versa. it's all about experience, To know the true feeling or emotion in all aspects and to understand the fullness of the experience to you as an individual. And yes personal suffering will bring you closer to the one, I don't know why this is but it is, maybe it's some form of disconnection from the basic instints that helps to connect to the soul, you're true self.
