I was a teen when I saw the Shining and Popeye.Didn't think of her as a sexy woman. But a few years ago I saw Brewster McCloud. She was cute as hell!I would have hit dat!
The great thing about Kubrick casting Duvall in this role is how you truly fear for her safety. She could easily snap like a twig at any second. Even in the quieter scenes, you can tell Nicholson and Duvall's characters' relationship is a troubled marriage and makes things more believable when Jack goes postal.
@Sarawithcats It's part of the hotel's 2-way radio that Jack destroyed when he went crazy. That's the point in the film where she realizes that he's not just drunk and is actually going insane and she really starts freaking out.
I don't understand anyone who dislikes her performance in this. It's so affecting, and one of the few that really gets me in the gut. For real, just watching the terror and exhaustion wash over her face makes my stomach twist. The scene where she reads what he's written, the look on her face is just... astounding. The way she moves her body and her mouth, like she's so terrified that she doesn't even know what to do with herself. Truly visceral work that Kubrick got out of her.
I know the "Shelly Duvall in The Shining was absolutely HORRENDOUS, AWFUL, RUINED IT FOR ME" attitude is the fashionable one these days..and a jaunt over to IMDB or various comment boards and forums will bear this out...
but I still have the sneaking suspicion that if Kubrick had cast a more traditionally beautiful actress who delivered EXACTLY the same performance......most of the Duvall critics would probably be RAVING about just what an absolutely brilliant performance she had given.
Vasyazadov Said: "My friend thinks she's the ugliest actress of all time, and I think she's pretty cute"
I think she's absolutely gorgeous, but obviously, chubby chasers would not think so.
Many men prefer women with small, slitty eyes, big flopping breasts and "something to grab." I think their preference is as disgusting as they think mine is, but to each his own.
@racookster Well I am with thees peepol who HATE dis woman!! To think, they could have gotten some real nice plump lucious big boobed thing to sit on Jacks face and sqeeeeaaaaaaalllllllllll!!!!!! .. But oh no, instead they must have this real terrible woman of the monstrous teeth who is like no real woman should ever be!! It is a disgrace! Had they only not done so, then poor Jack might have not gone insane and the ending would have been happy!
@racookster Actually, I have seen Duvall's little-known debute flick Brewster McCloud ( which has just been postd here ),.. and she DID look pretty hot in THAT one. However, concerning THE SHINING here,.. well buddy, I'm afraid I must go with the majority and agree that she looks pretty fucking terrible for the most part. I think a big part of it is the facial contortions ( amply dissplayed in this video here ),.. though they may have worked dramaticaly,.. I supose.
@Skulldini She was sick as a dog during the making of "The Shining," too. It played right into what Kubrick wanted from her. She wasn't supposed to look good. She was supposed to look used up and beaten down, non-ornamental, emotionally flat. Kubrick made sure of it.
@racookster Yeah, well that makes sense too. Who wouldn't be an ugly wreck after a few years domestic life with Jack Torance. She's also a chain smoker in the film and that shows in her physical apearance.
@vasyazadov Well, in my own opinion she's only a li'l bit ugly ( not VERY just a LI'L BIT ). Her eyes are too big for me and she's got teeth like a horse ( THATS the ugliest thing about her I think ). Though, in fairness, I'll note that Mr. racooster feels differently about that first feature there and thats cool brother. ( continued. This damn character count!! )
@vasyazadov ( Contd. ) However, I do think that "ugliest of all time" is overstating it quite heavily. I have certainly seen much uglier women in my life ( practicaly evereyday in fact ). And I'm suposing that this friend of your's just hasn't gotten out and around and seen very many himself. Anyway, it certainly isn't as though she's some disgusting fat pig of a woman! .. I'd do her.

Duvall completely ruined this film, god only knows what Kubrick was thinknig when he cast her. Look at her in any scene from the first hour of the movie, she sounds like he's reading the script out loud for the first time. She is unable to convey even simple emotions, in fact she appears talentless in every aspect of acting apart from being able to stand in position and scream on command, in all else she is sub-soap-opera level. When I first saw the film I actually thought she was retarded.
Kubrick wanted a flat, naturalistic performance from her in most scenes, and he wore her down with take after take to get it. If you think one frame of Ms. Duvall's performance made it into "The Shining" without it being exactly what the director wanted, you obviously know nothing about Stanley Kubrick.
Shelley was AMAZING in this movie. Not only did she convincingly show hysterical fear, she perfectly showed the nerves of someone married to a violent alcoholic. She was better than Nicholson's campy performance.

She is an very bad actor. I don´t believe her in that what she said. I like Rebecca De Mornay as Wendy more. She said what she thinks and she did an great job. But Shelly sucks. Maybe its Kubricks fault. Because her acting is not professional. Maybe he had shoult take some other actor for Wendy. But now its too late. I´m sorry but Shelly Duvall is not very beautiful and this for an actor. She has got DIE GOLDENE HIMBERRE. ;)
shelley duvall was the best performer in the shining by a mile! you're talking balls!! i thought she carried the movie, whereas nicholson was quite hammy. ...kubrick apparently traumatized the poor girl with his treatment of her during this film. if you watch the making of.. he talks to her like she is dirt while kissing nicholson's ass. i also read that she has been seen returning to where the film was shot numerous times since she gave up acting.
Kubrick is just like Jack in the film. They can be quite similar , only that Kubrick is mean in a subtle way.
Kubrick is frustrating and stressing out Shelley. She might as well be more afraid of Kubrick while doing the takes than she was to Jack. It might as well have not been acting.
The naive and cartoonish look is just perfect for the role. You don't get many people like that.
When I saw this I thought you were going to include at least one other of Shelly Duval's films in this. Showing only the scenes from a single movie where in every shot she is supposed to be reflecting complete terror isn't really a reflection of her range.
This is not fair. Shelly Duvall was Kubrik's own hand-picked choice for the role and he worked her like a dog to match his vision of how Wendy Torrance should react.
This is indeed a pointless collage... Compare this film with for instance her work for Altman and you'll see that her "range" is absolutely impressive... By the way I don't think that an actor's range is as important as his/her ability to portray a character with depth and authenticity.
I don't really think it's fair if you're implying that she can't act, because the woman is amazing. She was suppose to be in a constant state of hysterics throughout the whole movie, and I really think you should watch 3 Women before you go on about her range, which she does have.
Seriously... How many reactions is a woman supposed to have to an ongoing situation of the same nature? No one is criticizing Jack Nicholson for playing Jack Nicholson in the film.
that was beautifully put. I think her ability to remain in the state she was in was brilliance. takes alot of strenght and emotion, it took alot out of her.
It's possible that the title is sarcastic... eh? And the weird flashing ending was to show that each scene looked just about exactly the same as the next~ a sort of "flip-book" effect. That's what I'm thinkin', anyway...
Yeah, I feel bad for her about Kubrick being a complete dick on the set.
But in an interview, she said that if it weren't for him stressing her out, the movie would never have come out as good. I think her actual anxiety triggered the anxiety of her character, which made it more realistic.
Yeah. she conveyed continual terror just great. What else was she supposed to do? I mean, her husband abuses her, he tries to kill her, and she keeps running into evil ghosts and corpses and stuff. You want her to give a dramatic monologue?
I would show her in a larger range of roles, because this is called "the Range of Shelly Duvall", not "Shelly Duvall can act scared as hell really well". I just don't think it shows her range like the title suggests. Just an opinion.
Ok, I'm not sure what the slow motion at the end was all about. Yeah, maybe she wasn't the strongest part of that movie. I once heard an audio clip of Stanley Kubrick yelling at her on the set about how bad she sucks but I can't find it anymore. It was pretty awesome.
She's a LOT better in 3 Women.
