  • 900 ton keep up that pace and the only thing that will be left to catch are starfish.

  • nice

  • AND WHEN THEY'RE ALL GONE?

  • as long as they're eaten and not wasted then no prob

  • If you stopped fishing hearing !!!!! All other fish stocks would flourish !!!! Sardine & anchovies to !!!! I'm a Hawaiian sustance Ahi fishermen . Tuna!!

  • Like if saw u a Chevy jump out of a plane.

  • Ur not gonna do this lott time more.

waters have been robbed of fish

theres too much catching, and fish cant produce so fast.

its sad...and then they smile when they throwing thousands away to ring the fucking bell...

well,im glad i saw this new breed of rednecks.

  • Peeps be freekin out bout this but it's coo there's a good ol amount a fish in the ocean and what we take gets replaced by the baby don't u peeps be freekin out the fish will be chill were good

  • the world is being over hunted and over fished.scre wbig money driven companies

  • This is why we are not going to be able to go out and catch fish like we do now in 50 years. There might be a"lot of fish now but there wont be if this keeps up.

  • If this is how u make ur living you think yay! Great there's lots of fish forever. But--- there's not. Just ask the cod fisherman. There was billions 60 years ago, and now there are virtually none. The same thing will happen with your fishery. It makes me sad to see people do this over and over world wide and never learn. " those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it" . It's a shame your grandchildren will never see a 100th. The fish like this. But WTF need that new flat screen!

  • @Fukthisisgonnahurt shutup will you with your complaining! theres huge profits in fishing someone will always do it

  • Better to harvest fish than Whales

  • this is a sign of overfishing large predators. therefore these herring have no natural enemies.....except man

  • I saw this episode, its very good. Worth Watching if you get the chance.

  • It's not the amount of fish in one or the amount caught during one day that matters to sustainability. What matters is how large the biomass is, how much it has to eat and how much is harvested during the whole year. We see sets like these several times a year in the fishing for atlantic herring. We catch over a million tons of it every year, yet still the fishing is sustainable, because the biomass is over 10 million tons.

  • Snaapp....that's the fish lottery fellas. To think I catch hell for taking 5 or 6 Walleye out of the lakes.

  • @Lonewolfff36 but you can take buckets of smelt.....pretty much what a herring is in the ocean food chain

  • In some ways that is messed up.. because what will the larger fish eat? and other animals. should kinda be a limit on the sets but still a great video

  • fuckers give the fish time to breed at least.

  • What a set!

    Wow, I'm speachless.

  • @vztitan

In 2008 for sitka sound alone there was 14,386-ton quota.

Alaskan fisheries are extremely regulated, and will continue to be a source of sustainable income for a very long time.

  • @vztitan

If your would have done your research, you would have noticed that the Sitka Sound herring fishery has only about 50 permits in circulation.

The quota is based on the age-structure-analysis model(ASA) which is used to estimate abundance, survival and maturation rates needed to forecast the biomass or mature herring returning for the next spawning season. The model uses the previous year's harvest tonnage; age, weight and length from all commercial herring fisheries.

  • Good job this was all recorded, the vast shoals of herring in the north sea have long since been overfished. its only a matter of time before this fishery collapses and these images will be history!

  • @kerryfoster1 and another person that knows nothing of American fishery system we are the most regulated in the world fines are to high to over fish

  • for real ellehowey. These yuppies have no idea what they are commenting on. Alaska is the last place we have to worry about depleting the various runs of fish. I am a commercial fisherman myself and I have nothing but good things to say about both of those boats and crews that had the huge catches that season

  • Comment removed

  • @Japskimo88 i wasnt sayin anything bout the crews or the boats i was talkin to these fuckheads saying that its bad i reckon good luck to them if there was such a problem with the amount of fish or this type then there would be a limit of what n how much u can take so to all those who think this is bad then get fucked

  • fuck me i dont no what all u cunts a winging about fuck the fish people have to survive they choose to do it and if this wern,t posted on here u fukwits wouldnt even no so how many ppl do ya think eat them in the world bet all those fish spread around the world wouldnt last a day so fuk up

  • Comment removed

  • those guys are fucking ravenous pigs

  • those guys are fucking robbers....... fuck you and your half milion ...burn in hell

  • I am all for fishing and love to eat fish, but this is sad. I hope someone can get this under control before the oceans get depleted.

  • 1400 tonn set ..

  • a real waste just for eggs for some jap aholes

  • hi what show is this from? is it a tv series?

  • ok with me being a fisher man and a sea food lover this is looking like a fat pay day and a good diner to me and all you tree hugers that are crying one female can have 4000 to 10000 eggs a year and about 40% of them well live so how many new fish are born every year stop crying it is how they feed there kids if you dont like it dont eat fish ok

  • @xgrmd18x Alright, you made me laugh. Herring can produce more than 10,000 eggs to begin with, and 40% of those DO NOT survive to a mature age where they can spawn again. I think you'll find around 2 - 3% of eggs survive to spawning-age, so therefore, the way in which these people catch Herring is not sustainable. Look how many fish they just took. Alright, they have quotas, but these quotas don't include the needs of the ecosystem/animals either. You need to do your research, my friend.

  • You can watch a biased documentary or read a leaflet and become an expert. Alaska's fisheries are sustainable. They will continue to be the most healthy fisheries on the planet. I have taken part in these fishries, seen the science behind it all, and continue to enjoy record returns. So please, educate yourself before you wantonly blab about my way of life.

  • Wow when your in em, your in em, in Alaska. Good luck with maintaining this fisheries. I commercial fished from 1970-1986 for Salmon, Dungeness crab, Albacore Tuna, Rock cod and Dover sole and other bottom fish. I've fished both hook and line and trawler from Big Sur, Ca. to Astoria Wa.. I watched all of these fisheries die and now there almost totally gone. It's amazing that we depleted the entire west coast in probably about 100 years. I guess finding the balance is really tricky.

  • The reason you watched your fisheries die is because of a lack of mangement. Oh, and they let the draggers go crazy for too long. Dragging is freakin criminal - needs to be outlawed. But we're doing pretty well up here in AK.

  • @Alaskrab BS!

  • ellehowey,

how do you figure it's based on a quota system? if they set the quota a 1000 tons, that one boat alone pulled that. then what do you do with the 60 other boats' catch? the fish are dead before they can close the season, thus pawning up more than the alotta "quota". nice try. Armblaster, you nailed it!!

  • to the people who think that this fishery is crazy... If everyone ate at the bottom of the food chain instead of the top the worlds fisheries wouldn't be on the brink of extinction. Having seen the beaches in Sitka after the fishery I can assure you that 50 miles of spawning herring can't be wrong...

  • Quit raping the nursery!

  • that's greedy

  • Wow now i know why we were only able to catch 5 this year. Cool wipe em all out

  • i lived in Holland for many years, one of my many favourite memories of holland is waking up in the morning for a brisk walk to the fish market, where i would eat the freshest, tastiest Herring around !

a few every morning i had with pickles and finely chopped sweet onion... mmmm mmmm deeelishhh !

my mouth is watering for one now !

  • oh and this is for randomX1

a herring is usually only 5-7 inches long, so it is not a fish that you would want to eat.

they are caught for the sole purpose to harvest the female's eggs, which are then sold almost exclusively to the japanese market.

  • @ellehowey shutup you shit fag

  • @ellehowey This goes way beyond making a living. $1/2 a mill in one day, must have a big family...

  • @EatTheWind get real, these guys work damn hard for the little cash they get, lets look at this

    $500,000 catch

boat takes $250,000 for fuel, matanice, net mending, safty equipment, fishing licences, and any thing eles that cost the boat money.

so $250,000 left for the crew take away there grub money $2000avg.

that leaves 248,000 = crew share is 35,428 for 5 crew members

then the captian takes double share 70,857... then after all that they get to pay taxes on the lump sum,

  • @EatTheWind get real, these guys work hard for the little cash they get, lets look at this $500,000 catch,

  • @hypervanguy And we got to pay a 3% tax to the village of Akutan. And 5% management fee. At first it sounds glorious, but in the end it's nothing what most people think it would be. Sure there's some boats that guys make bank on, but it's hard as hell to land a job on them.

  • @albinio157 yep, by the time it filters down to the guys doing all the work and spending weeks at sea just to wait for the opening just to get a possible payout, some times if you work it out by the hour its not what you would call great wage..

  • @ellehowey no doubt... i guess most of these idiots have no idea what a stock assessment is, and why they are done

  • @ellehowey you mean people eating tasty animals XD

  • @ellehowey You are ignorant. These qouta systems have been approved by people within the industry who are making profit form the over fishing. The real sustainable qouta's are much less then the money based ones you operate under. So please dont pretend you are fishing sustainably, becoz even you yourself know the truth.

  • are you ignorant??? these 'fishing quotas' are not designated by the people in the industry making profit!!it is managed by a very extensive collection of data both from the boats observers (who are paid to monitor the fishing and waste)and from scientist and biologist. In reality since 'quota' was created the fish have made a HUGE COME BACK .go read the real data not the peta crap! I am the wife of a fisherman and trust me I did my homework on how it was affecting the ecosystem! annually!

  • @kuruki213 ive lived in sitka alaska my hole life the place were this take place and we are NOT overfish in fact this year is going to have the most herring yet so realy its quite the opposite of what you think dipshit

  • @ellehowey but the problem is in other countries, they have no cap on fishing

  • @boldziga Australia does

  • @123123joey rly??? dang

  • @ellehowey alaska is the most well organized and protected fishing industries... studies show that alaska is one of the only healthy fish populations of the world( strict rules and real protection , makes for a healthy sea)

  • enjoy seafood thank a havestor

  • no they are not Monferno. They are finding a way to survive for a long time

  • What they are doing it is very bad everybody must watch the movie "home" on youtube

  • send them to the starving millions

  • I love it Keep up the good work boys

  • I <3 fish

  • Holy Moma

  • so 5 million for the whole region almost a million for that one boat. sick. for how many hours 2?

  • I WIN!

  • the picture at the end is insane

  • I just wonder if they put some of the eggs back or something. I know people have eat and make money. We have to find a way to make this back up before it all gone.

  • this fishery has not been around for as long as you might think and is almost exclusively shipped to Japan and Korea.. big money...big loss for the food chain in Sitka Sound

  • save the fish...smoke an indian.

  • Way to go Alaskan Fishermen!! I can't believe some of the comments on here from uninformed tree huggin liberals. The herring fisheries, like salmon, in Alaska are pretty well regulated and have been going on for generations. More fishermen care more about the environment and fish stocks then you'd think...their livliehood depends on it. The only thing so far to wipe out herring stocks in Alaska has been #&**$ exxons' oil spill.

  • holy fuck

  • Well, if they have been doing this for years and now all of a sudden theres even MORE herring, well it doesn't look like they're going extinct anytime soon.

  • >=O No wonder animals are going to extinction!!

  • You Idiots the season is only open for a few hours it can be as short as 2 0r the hours and then its over. Its not like there catching these numbers every day. Go find something else to complane about. Fish on guys " Let her Go "

  • I thought fishing was hard work. Just keep raping like that, and maybe it will be hard work. Pussies!!

  • then you wonder why fucken

    whales or sealions starve..

    morons..

  • Uhh if you've caught enough fish isn't that enough? I know its a business and all but if you don't have any fish to catch next season.... SCREWED!!

People just need to eat less and waste less, eat healthy and live healthy.

  • Eating fish is healthy, its healthier then eating red meats like beef or chicken. Fish meat helps with many things and has a lot of properties that beef and chicken dont have either. -_- And i do think that the fish are being bred under controlled environments, like ktownkrawler says, if they dont find a way to resupplement the ocean, they wont have a source of income.

  • of course fish are healthy, however mercury released from coal power plants lands in water and it makes fish quite toxic to eat. and then there's arsenic too, pcb, dioxin and whatever humans dump in waters.

  • I'm a carnivore, but damn, all the fish stocks would get depleted if we continue overfishing. I guess I'm to blame also, I love eating fish.

  • if you're a carnivore, are you sure you arent frying meat in vegetable oil and spices, and eat it with a vegetable sauce? carnivores dont put pepper and chili on their raw prey.

  • 3:17 My dads on that boat , the Nicholas michael

  • Shut up u hippies... get a life animals were put on earth for us to use.... including the use for clothes...food...makeup....product testing.... Bi product is in everything meaning all the shit you use daily. Get a clue peta lovers

  • You know humans are animals also. Perhaps we should test some cosmetics on you. Or find out home much rat poison it takes to kill you.

  • Oh yea totally listening to you when you are someone who glorifies 420.... wow what a winner

  • animals werent put here for us to use. they are here because of abiogenesis and evolution. if god truly gave us animals, lets see some evidence like evolution always shows. but bible says bats are birds and rabbits chew their cud, so it already shows its a mythology.

teeth dont prove we are for meat, our ability to digest does. lystrosaurus had two tusks and it was a herbivore.

and using animals to test your lipstick is absolutely ridiculous. test it on humans or stop selling poison.

  • fail

  • Not that it has anything to do with the video but....the whole "rabbits chew their cud" thing is not worth bringing up. I'm pretty sure people in Biblical times knew nothing about ruminants (rabbits are ruminants - they re-eat their own feces to digest more from it). As far as they were concerned, re-eating their food (whatever it's digested state) served the same purpose.

And I'm pretty sure no-one puts lipstick on herring. ;)

  • Ok, that last post of mine was meant to be a reply to a previous post (it doesn't make any sense at all where it is! :)

And of course I meant to say that rabbits are refactants, not ruminants. woops.

  • good on em. fishermen are tough heads man. respect

  • stop complaing u all eat fish anyways so u gonna feel sorry and become vegetarians

  • bravooo!!! excellent work catch it all till get instinct, who cares tomorrow,

  • no big surprise that these guy's are Alaskans...Sarah Palin would be proud.

  • Oh man.. poor herrings, massive over fishing for you greedy bastards

  • man all the fishes dead :( sad

  • peladinho769 - I currently live in Edinburgh next to a fish shop and have lots of friends who are fish mongers. The industry is drastically down from 30 - 40 years ago. If you ask anyone in the fishing industry why - it is always due to overfishing. I am not making random comments.

  • yummmmmyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gets canned in Thailand so we buy it on our shelves

  • 1 cold and tiring night for 5.5mil. bill gates can't do that

  • Comment removed

  • wow -overfishing on video. who eats herring? mcd's fishsandwich?

  • i really cant watch this

    its so sad

  • how come=?

  • they r killing millions of living things.

    is that an explanation?

  • stupid

  • lol after another year all so the fishing industry gonna go bankrupt

  • all fishies go bye bye... :(

  • so much fish lol

  • Congrats to Skipper and the crew. On the BIG Catch

And for tepozjonny they still have those big herring set in Scotland and quite frequent.

Actually there is quite the abundance of herring in the North sea.

    Thanks

  • When the fish slide down that metal tunnel thing it looks like their all dead!

  • We have dumbass redneck fishermen, concerned about they're own profits, overfishing the crap out of our oceans. Freak this makes me so mad! What are they going to do with that money? freaking buy another beer!

  • Overfishing the ocean? I currently live in Scotland and fishing used to be this good here too. You don't realise the damage until you live in a place where the fishing industry was great at one point and now has virtually disappeared.

  • bastards raping our waters.

  • 5 AND HALF million dollars..... from just catching herring

  • mmmm somethings got to give when you remove that much. Balance has to tip someway, somewhere or somehow

  • What if a big 10 foot herring beat up the crew, broke the hoist on the boat, freed his fish buddies, stole money from the ship's safe, and rang that bell a bunch of times? I would have a big frosty beer with that fish!

  • lol i'd join you for a frosty beer with that fish

  • man i would laugh so hard if the boat had a hole and all the fishes just swam away

  • i work with and now fisheries and yes herrings are being over fished just like everything else

  • Its not very healthy to eat fish anymore, since people keep on throwing their s**** into the oceans and the fish get loaded with cra*.

  • u are wrong dude..did u think last time ppl s**** and buried it?? actually its not healthy coz many chem is dumped into the sea

  • chilax man, I was just saying that s**** is more like the stuff we process and dump into the oceans. I didn't mean real s***. Anyways, real s*** is healthy for the enivorment last time I heard.

  • incredible

  • LOL!, he uses a shovel to push all the fish around... over-fishing!

  • can you say over fishing

  • Lol, You guys think herring will be overfished? First of all you guys should know they breed REAL fast. The sea`s are overpopulated with them. There catch is not even 1/1000th of a billionth herring in the sea`s.

  • near 1/1000th billion?? oh my god thats a lot.

  • Humans; The most destructive race on the face of the planet.

  • They didnt mean to do it lol...

  • I hope their ice machine doesn't break down and force them to go back too early and face the perfect storm!

  • eh, this aint a movie man

  • I think they should take like half of that and put them in different parts of alaska so the fish dont die out.

  • ...Prepare for Extinction Herring.

    :(

  • the herring breed extremely fast

  • Are you joking, there are like billions of herring in the ocean. And they breed quite fast.

  • of course that won't happen again in history because you took all the herring better keep one fish in the museum

  • hopefully overfishing won't diminish the population of herring the government should control how much fish is taken out of the sea...that's why people kill animals to extinction no doubt humans are very greedy

  • that's a lot of fish. too much. they should let some go so that the fish populations don't suddenly dip.

  • cheap Jew and he's pissed because his Jew bretheren Bernie Madoff Made off with his money.

  • Once in a lifetime huh? I guess it's safe to say some of these guys are going to get the fish version of "gold fever".

  • thanks for killing all the fish, fucking jack ass drunk bastards

  • i second that

  • If you have no clue about fishing seasons or regulations then you will post ignorant and idiotic comments just like you did right now.

  • JESUS! i want to be a fishermen now

  • they are going to run them extinct!

  • so bad for the environment...there should be a limit.

  • If I'm not mistaken there are only a few weeks a year when they go fishing, what more do you want?

  • i hate this show

  • its a one tough job..

    they totally deserve it.

  • Everybody shut the fuck up and have a tuna sandwich.

  • lmao cheers
