In the previous comment, "Kimmerling" is Baruch Kimmerling. May I recommend two of his books. This first is Politicide:Ariel Sharon's War Against the Palestinians. The second is Clash of Identities. It will be published by the Columbia University Press shortly.
I have to comment on jessicaramer's posting of his late professor's opinion. Not only do you not have an opinion of your own, you post an opinion of a professor who you obviously think so little of that you do not mention his name (can we check his publication record?). A quick google would have found that in fact Mezvinsky is a highly honored Professor at CCSU. He is not only well published, he has worked for this country as a diplomat in the mid east.
How do I know this? He was my History Professor in 1980. He left me with at least two impressions. I would NEVER forget his name, and that there are two sides to every situation. We don't seem to want to face that reality here anymore and it's killing us.
If you are really interested in the Middle East, I would highly recommend Mezvinsky, for a perspective you will not find elsewhere, but please skip jessicaramer's review or should I say the review of his nameless (sociology?) professor.
I once asked the late professor of sociology at the Hebrew University, what he thought of Norton Mezvinsky. He had never heard of him but after checking his publication record, Kimmerling commented that Mezvinsky's publication record was VERY POOR and that Mezvinsky could maybe be a TA at his university.
If you are really interested in the Middle East, read the writings of Kimmerling, a serious scholar with an impressive vita. Skip Mezvinsky altogether.
