I was in the music biz back in the 80s and 90s (Austin, TX), and faced the SAME EXACT QUESTIONS, way back then. :(
My solution: add the word "classical" in front of whatever it is you do (e.g. "classical pianist", "classical guitarist", etc.). The response was usually nods, quiet deference, and no more silly questions.
The guy in the striped orange shirt should have a 1/2 hr comedy series. He is absolutely hilarious. "a bit.. a bit of a living? oh that's great!" "And, you get paid to have fun? oh that's greaaat!"
