  • 'Batten down the hatches' would be possibly an English term, but no doubt would have been said in many different contexts in many different languages before hand.

But from what I know it is referring to the structure of a ship, and preparing it for a storm to hit. So battening down the hatches would mean securing all the doorways and hatches to prevent excessive water from entering the ship.

So batten down the hatches would mean just prepare for trouble.

  • Great video! I was just leaving uni up in Joondalup when this started. It was spectacular to watch but my God it was scary driving in it! The hospital you mentioned was our local one. A local school had damage to 70% of the rooms. My car was written off due to hail damage. Our patio roof looked like someone took a machine gun to it! lol we actually had water coming in through the air con vents and the lights! It was pretty intense!

  • Comment removed

  • @m1key555 i apologise that something actually happened in perth for once

  • Living in Perth myself....this is a pretty good video BUT it does NOT give justice to the fierceness of that particular storm...Nicko is right....it was an amazing storm and I don't think any footage would have done it justice..... And yes it was freakin scary....

  • @DayneMunt i can agree... although where i live only got the rain (thank god) but it was a wicked experience... i love storms and that was the best ive ever seen... i do feel sorry for all the families who lost cars houses and whatever else they may hav lost...

  • Living in Perth myself....this is a pretty good video BUT it does NOT give justice to the fierceness of that particular storm...Nicko is right....it was an amazing storm and I don't think any footage would have done it justice..... And ye it was freakin scary....

  • dude !!! you were totally chill!!!! I WOULD BE FREAKING WHEN YOU SAID THE WORSE STORM IN PERTH

  • you dont live far from me. you went past my house in armadale. the storm hit hard and flooded my yard and back room.

  • lol omg is that kelmy traino??

  • Kind of funny, i guess?? I understand not being use to it, but lord florida daily afternoon storms are worse than this, i guess I'm just use to severe summertime dailt storms. our hail gets to the size of softballs!!!

  • half ur lawn is underwater mate.

  • Hi mate. I live in Wolverhampton England..We react like you when the sun comes out haha

  • ummm ok?

  • I dont think the people that weren't here in the storm understand how much lighter the camera made the clouds. I was up on the roof at the time fixing a cracked tile, before the storm hit, and i watch it, in the 10 or so minutes i was up there the storm had moved so fast, it was scary.

I then had to go to work, and within 10 minutes of the rain hitting the car park was flooded, like almost deep enough to swim. Truly was an amazing event, and sadly the most exciting thing in Perth in a long time.

  • were moving to perth from england in the next few years , and we get more than enough rain ....and trust me we won't miss it .........peace

  • ‘To batten down the hatches’ means to prepare for pending trouble. It is a nautical term from the early 19th century. When a ship was about to enter rough seas, the captain would order the crew ‘to batten down the hatches’. The crew would close all the hatches (doors) on the ship’s decks and use lengths of batten (rods) to secure the hatches in the closed position.

Hope this helps and it seems to be a world wide term.

  • THERE'S NOT ENOUGH FUCKEN SWEARING ON THIS CUNT OF A VIDEO!!!

  • Oh the Perth people, i love them so much, anyone would think that it was hurricane katrina that had hit Perth with they way people was acting, anyway it wasnt so bad down at Rockingham, but still bad for Perth standards.

  • @AshChapman777 it was f all down in Rockingham that is why you say it wasn't that bad. You got no ha, not much rain ( my mum lives in Rockingham ) but I can assure you it was fucking crazy here in the city.

    Cheers

  • That was hilarious Rob. We get storms like that and much worse here so Im used to them. Glad you all faired well thru it.

  • you are lucky you got the rain first we had clouds (purple) roll over quicker than you could blink

  • Actually, Melbourne gets it weather, anywhere from the North to the South, but yes, generally from a western orientation, generally. Just to let you know, this was a completely different storm to the Melbourne storm, well same characteristics, but different trough line, etc.

  • Glad to see you guys are ok. Hopefully the garden and house didn't cop too much damage.

  • i wanna go swimming daddy lol

  • that is a shame! that the hospital of the birth of ur baby was born!

  • @watupdog892 in the us we use the format of date/month/year so like the 12th of February is 12/02/2010

  • hahahah pussy rescue was amazing! iv done that before!

  • I really like this. It is like the movie Cloverfield.

    A great documentation :D

  • your baby is really cute :D

  • Awesome vid mate, good to see your power came back on sooner than two days too, so how bad was the 2nd storm front that night? not too bad I hope, otherwise you would have to pay out a lot of money for therapy for poor sasha and your cats :( lol

  • That was one of the best video ever. Such a great documentation. It reminded me of one of those doomsday movies especially at the end of the video where you and jess are just sat there with Immy in total dark talking for the last few minutes of camera memory. I know you said at the end its pretty serious but I got to admit I really love thunderstorms and I'm so jealous now lol.

  • Is this the same storm that hit Melbourne? It just finally got over your way, or just a new one which had the same affects.

  • @roset85 This was a new storm. Melbourne usually gets Perth's weather about two days later - I hope we don't get this storm in two days time!!!

  • @bundybearable Yeah I hope so, I think people are still recovering from last week.

  • @roset85 Definitely! We still have tarps all over our roof & have a big wooden board where our front window used to be. Mind you, our neighbours roof completely fell in, & they're now out of their house for at least 6 months - we were lucky!

  • im pleased u guys are all ok and u handled it well we had worse then that a few years back loads of people lost there homes and stuff it was that bad so u was kinda lucky but still im so pleased ur all ok and imogen handled it well for a baby i hate thunder and i get scared i used to hide under my duvet when i was little so yh hope all is ok and no one got to hurt

  • Incredible, glad you guys are safe.

BTW - batten down the hatches is used here in the US as well.
