I remember the first time I saw this years ago and I didn't know who the next doctor was gonna be. Haha I was just like, "What the crap?? He's freaking hot!"
I still miss 9. He should have stayed another season. One thing that always struck me about his regeneration into 10 was although he was sad to go he did it with a lot more dignity and grace then 10 did at the End of Time, who blubbered " I don't wanna go". The Doctors' regenerated quiet a few times by the time he's gotten to 10 and has never been so reluctant to regenerate despite his uncharacteristic crying to Wilf during that special. I just chalk it up to bad writing.
Chris often, sadly gets sidelined by most people because he only did one Series, and that Tennant came straight afterward and stole everyones hearts. Infact, most people call him a crap Doctor because they immediately compare him to David Tennant sub concisely. Ive seen a few people do so at Exhibitions and conventions. McCoy was always my first Doctor in the TV Movie before he regenerated into McGann, but Chris was always the one that kicked me into a fan. Doctor No 9, youda man!
I didn't care for him much at first, but then I fell in love with the new Doctor. Now I've come to the point when he changes again, and I don't like it.
@helldrag0n47 Not exactly, all slightly different with the same core beliefs. The reason I think he act's so goofy is that he's a alien to EVERYTHING. He's the last time lord... well, most of the time.
Im sorry all you newbie Doctor fans. David Tennant is/was a great doctor but hes not the best...no where near it. Tom Baker IS and always will be the best Doctor that ever graced the small screen. Ive been watching/following the Doctor since the early 70's and Tom has David beat hands down.
it really seems like tennant (and to a lesser extent smith) get all the love from this fandom. you can look on tumblr or on doctor who forums and they're all celebrating just those two and debating which is better. but eccleston so much better than either. nine is understated and complex and has hilarious deadpan humour and his journey from someone who has no hope left after slaughtering his whole race to someone who swallows the time vortex to save a human is just amazing.
I'm not saying that this wasn't sad, because 9 was one of my favorite doctors but I loved how the Doctor just kind of took it and was like "Hope I can do these things, but it was great knowing me".
the thing that makes me sad about every time the doctor regenerates like the 9th said its cheating death but is it as the doctor you knew dies and is reborn into someone you don't know, never met NO ONE CAN ESCAPE DEATH NOT EVEN, THE DOCTOR!
At first, when I didn't watch any episode with Eccleston yet, I thought like: That guy belongs in an Action movie, not a science-fiction movie. But after I watched a few episodes with Eccleston I thought: Why didn't he stick around longer? T-T
I like Tennant and all, but it drives me nuts to see comments like "and a much better doctor was born" and such. I started crying because I loved the 9th doctor and he just died! I really started bawling when he said "I'm not gonna see you again, at least not like this, with this daft old face." Good grief, that line killed me.
well it's not realy clear, the whole 13 regeniartions rule was first used as a plot point in the deadly assassin when the master has used up all his regenirations turning him into a monster, the rule has since stuck around but in on of the jonn pertwee episodes he mentions he could live for ever as long as he dosn't die, the 13 regeniration rule has been used alot though the show but i beleve the last mention of it was in the tv movie so its not so clear now,
@FLAME4564 in your opinion. I agree Tennant is a terrific actor and his portrayal of the Doctor was great, but I think would be unfair to call him the most epic or the best.
Now I'm gonna contradict myself by saying coz we all know the best was Eccleston, GO ECCLESTON! :P
I found myself much more emotionally involved when Christopher Eccleston's Doc died, aside from the fact that I liked him more than David, his happiness and his last words being "you were fantastic and so was I" GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS For Fuck Sake! It felt like closing a book and opening another. David's "I don't wanna go" just made me think "wow they're REALLY dragging out this regeneration like it's the second coming of jesus" the show made it so obvious that they were losing their favourit doc
I never really liked Eccleston, so when I saw him regenerate I was like "OK, next please!" When Tennent left I cried, when Smith leaves I'll smash my TV. Smith's my favorite.
i think the 12th doctor should be very young and this is my opinion should be at least 19 so you can get 2 decades out of them just imagine how much emotion you'd get after 20 years the 12th doctor regenerate look how people reacted after david there for 4 years x5 it's be alot more dramatic
@bloodboy235 That sounds really good. But I say the 11th and the 12th Doctor will only have 3-4 seasons each just like the 10th. I mean, there's the 13th and last doctor we have to think about too. And besides, 1 doctor for 20 years, no one would want that. It's too long and people will get bored of it after a while.
@CdrCactus 20 years would be ok as long as they re-invent the 12th every few seasons beause what we got to remember after the 13th then its over so make most out it
Eccleston was never my all time favorite doctor, and I was really excited to move on to Tennant in the second series (because I love him!) but as I was watching this I started freaking out because I realized how much I was going to miss the 9th doctor!!! Sadness :(
I remember seeing this episode when it first aired on SciFi... and I handwaved it. Oh, God. If only I had known what a momentous occasion this was. I feel ashamed to have done that. I didn't deserve to see that moment.
I miss Eccleston. This was before they mucked about with the intro music, and hired somebody who drowns out most of the dialogue with overpowering background music. The writing's all got a bit loose and there's too much science fiction 'magic' to tie up loose ends at the end of stories. Oh dear, I like a good moan don't I.
@BNCA70 i actually agree...a lot of the times the music is kinda too loud and that makes it hard to hear dialog being spoken. i've noticed too that Matt Smith speaks very fast and i find it hard to understand him sometimes. Series 5 and 6 have been good but don't excite me as much as series 1-4 did. I'm not complaining of course P: merely stating my opinion.cheesy doctor who beats half the stuff on tv now lol!
@benToddTv It seems now that saying one prefers Series 1-4 to the new ones is viewed as bad or something like that. I like Series 5 and 6 although i prefer Series 5 more. Series 6 had some good episodes and then it had some not so good ones (The Curse of the black spot for example that was such a pointless episode). I can watch previous series episodes and enjoy them a lot more than ones now. Don't get me wrong i still like the show but its just not the same as it used to be.
Not to belittle David Tennant (not knocking him, just the writing), but at least Eccleston's Doctor faced death with a smile, not a whiny "I don't want to go." Again, not Tennant's fault, just a scene I thought RTD didn't do his best with.
@ericinwisconsin Both died rather excellently in their own way which is important. I do love how David Tenant just acts like absolutely nothing just happened.
I think Eccleston's 9 gets overshadowed due to the brevity of his tenure and the runaway popularity of 10, but be that as it may, I really loved this take on the character and that last line in particular. It's just never going to get any better than that, for me.
If only the 9th last longer, seriously that guy had so much potential, oh well... I wonder if he will appear in some special like "The 5 Doctors" or "Time Crash". :P
@torchwood10 Seriously? I really like what Moffat's done for the show, I thought his episodes were the best of the Russel T Davies era and the last two seasons have been the best since the new run started.
i remember watching this and my very first thoughts was who the fuck is this guy... what happened to my doctor =( i hated david at first, hated him XD but then i started watching his episodes and well i loved his episodes, then i saw the classic series stories and loved their portrayal of the doctor =D including so matt's doctor so awesome =D
iv seen Doctor Who with Christopher, David and Matt, so I can see how different they all were in their own ways, I think my favourite is definatly Matt Smith, he is very funny, i loved rose but i think i like amy more now, i never liked martha.
I think this was better handled than the Tenth Doctor's regeneration. Nine went out with a smile, embracing his death, but the Tenth Doctor just broke down into depression..
That was beautiful. First the Doctor selflessly and willingly sacrifices himself to save Rose, explains to her what is about to happen in lucid but gentle terms, before transforming into a brilliant form of the Doctor known as David Tennant. I just wish that Tennant had received as beautiful an exit.
I was so sad. Couldn't look the next episode, and nearly Hate tennant. And then i saw fightin with one hand. and i understand that the DOCTOR is not an actor. He is a myth. I love all of them <3
I liked Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, but of course not as much as David Tennant who is/was aaaawwwesoooome and soo handsome. I think he played a much more versatile Doctor. He could be more intimidating when he needed to be (his serious face pwns Tennant's and Smith's), his only downfall was that he wasn't as funny as the 10th and 11th but he was still funny!! I really liked him, he was the 1st doctor I knew, and I was sad when he left. First time I saw Tennant I thought he looked funny.
I remember the first time I saw this years ago and I didn't know who the next doctor was gonna be. Haha I was just like, "What the crap?? He's freaking hot!"

But Eccleston was a great Doctor. And say what you will about Tennant or Smith. I will always defend him.

Oh, Nine, Nine, Nine. I don't want you to go! I've yet to find a Doctor with that tpye of smile.

the 9th left to soon... don't get me wrong I like the 10th alot, just not enough about the 9th
YukaiSkater 3 months ago
I think Eccleston's 9 gets overshadowed due to the brevity of his tenure and the runaway popularity of 10, but be that as it may, I really loved this take on the character and that last line in particular. It's just never going to get any better than that, for me.

Good bye Christopher Eccleston & hello David Tennant
PaulC19841 3 months ago
If only the 9th last longer, seriously that guy had so much potential, oh well... I wonder if he will appear in some special like "The 5 Doctors" or "Time Crash". :P

@torchwood10 Moffat doing well but his eps to short and by the way RTD was a twat to david.
CPTTAYLOR592 2 months ago
@torchwood10 Seriously? I really like what Moffat's done for the show, I thought his episodes were the best of the Russel T Davies era and the last two seasons have been the best since the new run started.

The best doctor is David Tennant hands down.

iv seen Doctor Who with Christopher, David and Matt, so I can see how different they all were in their own ways, I think my favourite is definatly Matt Smith, he is very funny, i loved rose but i think i like amy more now, i never liked martha.

this regeneration in a definite contender for the best regeneration of all time, compared to the fifth to sixth .
Jez32uk 4 months ago
I think this was better handled than the Tenth Doctor's regeneration. Nine went out with a smile, embracing his death, but the Tenth Doctor just broke down into depression..

I think the Ninth Doctor is underated.
