Haven't seen this for some years. My children, now in their 40's were glued to the television each week to watch 'The Box' . Sad how |BBC has declined so much.
quite simply the finest Christmas series (and BBC Children's) series ever! Watch it every Christmas; about to start watching with my eldest daughter: she's 5 so judicious editing required for "scary bits"
OMG! Slyvia Pouncer is Magenta from Rocky Horror Picture Show!!! And the old man Ramon Lully is Doctor Who! I'm sure I recognize Abner Brown from something too.
Utterly magical. I agree with you Petesstuff. The BBC Christmas serial was an institution. I'm in my mid-30s and the festive season just isn't the same without them.
The book was clearly an influence for Susan Cooper in her 'Dark is Rising' series; it is, alas, too late to wish that the people who adapted that book to the screen could have seen this series and been equally inspired.
Amazing high quality. So well written, acted and filmed. Great costumes and period evocation. Since I write for all ages, I find this fascinating and very cool! Youtube is wonderful. So little on TV these days. One really has to search for anything of quality. Neat to see the panorama of what has been produced through the decades.
I wonder what has happened to Flora Page, who played the pretty Susan in this series the girl with ginger which was short. I would suspect Flora Page is more than likely well and truly out of the acting profession by now, and is most likely working in a bank, a building society, a library, running a pub, running a restaurant, working in an offfice, working in a shop or even running her own business who knows? It is often the case many child actors and actresses leave the profession after a time
Ah, this is good magical entertainment. I bought the DVD for my kids last Christmas. So good for them to watch something that is clean and fun and not infested with homosexuals and wogs.
@runforthehills707 I think that statement says more about you than it does me. We're living in a world where adults buy their kids pole dancing kits and T shirts with inappropriate slogans. So you can leave 'homosexuals and wogs' out of it as I think you are sexualising kids pretty well without anyone else's help. I don't think your comments are appropriate for this site or show any kind of maturity for someone who is supposed to be a parent
I have always loved this piece of music by Hely Hutchinson it reminds me of my childhood, sitting by the fire listening to children's hour lost in another world...I'm so glad the same music has been used here.

Magical actor, Patrick Troughton. He excelled in mysterious and sinister roles. I would have loved to have seen him as the irascible Davies in a production of Pinter's The Caretaker.
@kissingcandy1 Dont remember the watchtower ?.... remember one program where some kids were trapped in some sort of labryinth ?... in the very last episode they did find their way out but cant for the life of me remember what it was called ???? anyone ?
@kissingcandy1 I remember that, the girl who went to stay by the sea & discovered ghosts. I've got the first episode on tape still somewhere but I can't remember how it ended.
Whatever happened to the BBC ?.... in the mid 80's as kids we had Box of Delights, Children of Green Knowe, The Tripods etc..... what have the kids got now ?
computer games, the internet and hundreds of channels..In 1984 we simply didnt have much else to keep us entertained
I instantly fell in love with Harry potter when I 1st saw it because it instantly reminded me of the look and feel of TV like Box of Delights and Children of Greene Knowe that I loved as a kid
@petesstuff "whatever happened to the BBC?" It's still making quality television for youngsters ('Sarah Jane Adventures', 'Tracey Beaker', 'Horrible Histories' etc) and it's the only broadcaster that's doing so in the UK. Perhaps you should be asking why ITV(who gave us some wonderful childrens drama in the past like 'Chocky', 'Tomorrow People', 'Children Of The Stones' and 'Feathered Serpent') no longer make any children's programming AT ALL.
Thank you so much for putting this here. It brings back such good memories. This mesmorised me back then, I couldn't miss a single episode. I have the DVD set of it now, and my children love it just as much : ) It's good to read that it was so well loved.
this is being turned into a film. sadly, the director is mike newell who has directed such garbage as 4 weddings and a funeral, and HP and the goblet of fire.
The Queens Nose is another good one

But I'm SO glad we got over that awful 1980's obsession with synthesizers!
REAL instruments are so much better.
