Sammy's book describes the antics Ed put both Mike and him through during the 2007 tour...He burned himself out by using...I wouldnt be suprized to see him up on stage pretending to play while the music is pumped through speakers.
His early guitar work 1978-1998 is epic, that's it...

If this was how VH played and acted on stage in the early '80s, they wouldn't have lasted 5 shows. And they certainly would never have obtained the moniker "the Mighty Van Halen". Now they're a bunch of 50-year-olds strolling around on stage, playing sloppy-ass versions of their former selves. And get that fucking kid off the stage already! He has all the stage presence of a microphone stand.

Yeah, sure... Ed has always been a little high from alcohol, or other drugs on stage, but it obviously isn't working for him any longer. He used to be a happy drunk. Now he is pissed off, and an angry drunk. A little high means being relaxed, too high and your a falling down drunk who can barely play. Ed's alocohol and drug addition has turned against him. He sobers up at the end of this tour, and plays fantastic. Let's all hope he stays sober, for the next tour coming up.
Has anybody considered the idea that the monitor might have been screwed up? Why does he throw the monitor at the sound man in another video? If you have experience playing live, and your sound man sucks, it can ruin a whole song. Eddie played very well completely trashed for years. This doesn't look like a drunk issue, it looks like a sound issue. But since none of us really know, we're all speculating.

I didn't see this tour either. Certainly wouldn't have thought I got ripped off if I had. I've certainly spent more money on things worse than EVH messing up a few solos . Sometimes your team wins and sometimes they loss.

Most of those early VH songs are from licks Ed came up with as a teenager, later being put to songs with Dave writting the lyrics. I can see why Ed would be tired of being expected to play them the same way. 40 years of the same shit... c'mon people, gimme a break.

Whatever makes you feel better. I was irritated when I heard Michael Anthony was not on the tour. Eddie Van Halen has provided us with music so timeless and powerful he's allowed a little slack. The night I saw them it was pure arena rock bombast. The likes of which do not exist anymore. Don't miss them again.
The second time they played Chicago in 2008, Ed is amazing! He plays scales and licks I've never heard him play before. He is perfect! He is so fast and he plays little fills and tricks...prolly' the best I have ever seen. Folks who were there and have footage of Chicago 2008...please re-post em' so we can drool!
Everybody on here that is a guitar player like me (for over 20 years now) knows that you have good days and bad, this was a bad bad. I saw VH 3 times on that tours and he sounded amazing, the new gear is awesome. I am stil pissed that Michael Anthony isn't there but when I heard the Chickenfoot CD I was past it because it's AMAZING!! Now, if there was a tour where they did both sides of VH (Sammy and Dave) that would be heaven. Can't wait to hear the new album this year and new tour this summer!

again...we think this is not the result of booze. Ed can play drunk quite well. This appears to be prescription painkiller mixed with beer. A deadly opiate/beer mix with some xanax on the side. Ed has had hip replacement surgery, half his tongue cut off from cancer and he is mid-divorce with his soon to be ex wife on the tour with them babysitting her son. I'd be swallowing half a bottle of xanax and oxicontin and downing 40 beers too...

You have to keep in mind that this was'nt recorded on a top notch recording device here either. Keep in mind where this person is located in context to the band and remember the device itself- a cell phone. 70% of what that phone was recording was guitar blast.
I refused to see this tour & the one with Sammy before it. I saw Van Halen in '78. Saw them many many times since. I just want to remember the good shows, not this crap.
They should donate that money to charity. It's sad to see a guitarist that I idolized as a kid actually be a loser. He fucked over Valerie. He fucked over Michael Anthony. And as far as I'm concerned he fucked over the audience who paid top dollar to see a drunken shell of a musician he used to be.
Edward is without doubt one of the greatest, most innovative and influential guitar players of all time but sadly there is a whole catalog of moments like these. But.... hey he's still Edward we still love him.

Yeah, sure... Ed has always been a little high from alcohol, or other drugs on stage, but it obviously isn't working for him any longer. He used to be a happy drunk. Now he is pissed off, and an angry drunk. A little high means being relaxed, too high and your a falling down drunk who can barely play. Ed's alocohol and drug addition has turned against him. He sobers up at the end of this tour, and plays fantastic. Let's all hope he stays sober, for the next tour coming up.

Has anybody considered the idea that the monitor might have been screwed up? Why does he throw the monitor at the sound man in another video? If you have experience playing live, and your sound man sucks, it can ruin a whole song. Eddie played very well completely trashed for years. This doesn't look like a drunk issue, it looks like a sound issue. But since none of us really know, we're all speculating.

There maybe some drug/alcohol and screwing with DLR issues here--but Eddie has never played the same song twice!!! This kicks ass from a guitar players point of view !!!! I only here a couple of notes that are out of place and that just happens at this level of playing the guitar !!!

It's not booze... Eddie, Alex, and Wolf are intentionally screwing it up just for Dave... there's no cooperation with DLR here at all, and watch DLR desperately trying to sing to it! Pleasureable :) I think Eddie would admit this ad lib rendition was just to get under Davy's skin...Control was the foremost issue as to why original VH split back in the mid '80s. Keep in mind, Eddie's already been there & done that... he does what he wants when he wants to do it & he's proving that to Dave

I didn't see this tour either. Certainly wouldn't have thought I got ripped off if I had. I've certainly spent more money on things worse than EVH messing up a few solos . Sometimes your team wins and sometimes they loss.

Most of those early VH songs are from licks Ed came up with as a teenager, later being put to songs with Dave writting the lyrics. I can see why Ed would be tired of being expected to play them the same way. 40 years of the same shit... c'mon people, gimme a break.

I stayed away from this tour because Michael Anthony wasn't on the tour. However, after reading reviews about how simply horrifying Eddie's playing had sunk to - let alone his overall performance - I am happy my gut instincts were correct.

@stevedrums Saw them in cleveland and they f-in rocked. Your gut instinct kept you from seeing rock n roll history. Anyone who would miss the reunion of Dave and VH is not a real fan. Whatever makes you feel better. I was irritated when I heard Michael Anthony was not on the tour. Eddie Van Halen has provided us with music so timeless and powerful he's allowed a little slack. The night I saw them it was pure arena rock bombast. The likes of which do not exist anymore. Don't miss them again.

The second time they played Chicago in 2008, Ed is amazing! He plays scales and licks I've never heard him play before. He is perfect! He is so fast and he plays little fills and tricks...prolly' the best I have ever seen. Folks who were there and have footage of Chicago 2008...please re-post em' so we can drool!

Everybody on here that is a guitar player like me (for over 20 years now) knows that you have good days and bad, this was a bad bad. I saw VH 3 times on that tours and he sounded amazing, the new gear is awesome. I am stil pissed that Michael Anthony isn't there but when I heard the Chickenfoot CD I was past it because it's AMAZING!! Now, if there was a tour where they did both sides of VH (Sammy and Dave) that would be heaven. Can't wait to hear the new album this year and new tour this summer!

Being responsible for his own actions is probable the success in his recovery this time around. Need we not forget...he is an unreliable recovery kind of dude. I get a real kick out of people saying that Eddie was just experimenting because he has played the song for so long. Are you people delusional? Van Halen was the reason I got into playing drums nearly 25 years ago. It was Van Halen all day, everyday for me when I was in high school. They are but an empty shell of what they once were. Regardless of boredom, you're still true to the song and Eddie is horrendous in this video. Cell phone or not. They were once great. No excuses needed.

again...we think this is not the result of booze. Ed can play drunk quite well. This appears to be prescription painkiller mixed with beer. A deadly opiate/beer mix with some xanax on the side. Ed has had hip replacement surgery, half his tongue cut off from cancer and he is mid-divorce with his soon to be ex wife on the tour with them babysitting her son. I'd be swallowing half a bottle of xanax and oxicontin and downing 40 beers too...

@Trooperx0 Ed was toast at the show...and it sounds horrible. I've heard plenty of boots from the tour when Ed was solid. It's one thing to improvise...it's another to abandon the simple of structure of a song so that at times it's not even recognizable.

You have to keep in mind that this was'nt recorded on a top notch recording device here either. Keep in mind where this person is located in context to the band and remember the device itself- a cell phone. 70% of what that phone was recording was guitar blast.
