There were talks about a planned video game on Snake Plissken (around 2003), involving Kurt Russell, Carpenter and Debra Hill (with Namco in charge) . Due to Hill's death the project was cancelled. She was co-producer of EFNY, the computer voice in said film, and co-writer/co-producer of EFLA.
For a moment when I was watching this, i thought John Carpenter had done a Quentin Tarantino and starred in the movie! I mistook Lee Van Cleef for him. Well, they kinda look alike (don't they?...).
Good idea, but the last two music is not so atmospherical. :S And at the beginning the "Discovery" track from MGS ost would be better. (it's just an opinion)
2.Kojima acknowledging the importance of EFNY on MGS, sought the "blessing" of Carpenter by sending him a letter.
3.Furthermore, Just a few examples -
In MGS(first game) there is a time limit of 24 hours, the same as EFNY. Solid is injected with FOXDIE, Plissken is injected with a virus. Plissken captured and "tortured" by the Duke, in the MGS the torture motif is known to all.
4.The James Bond influece only existed in MGS3 as a mood and style definer, nothing more .
Yes, MGS series indeed has a lot of influences. However I strongly disagree with your view. 1.The MAIN characters of the game both Solid Snake and Naked Snake AKA Big Boss are practically based on Plissken, and as main characters they are an integral part of the Storyline which defines the symbolism of the games : an ex-soldier who is used as a pawn by the government and the "system", and tries to fight his way against them while staying true to his own beliefs and ideals.
Really weird! i seen this film as a kid.. some reason thought it was escape from LA, i think it's two different ending..:S but yeah i always though wow! ? this story seems to link with metal gear solid.. snake.. and recueing the president and so on.. just really weird! didnt know it was acutally based on the film:)
when i was really young i thought that snake from escape from new york was solid snake. because then both had an eyepatch (though not on the same eye) and a 5 o'clock shadow and sorta long hair. so basically i they look similar and have the same fucking name so yeah....but later, i realized that snake changed his name to hoss delgado and became a character and billy & mandy....and solid snake got old, grew a mustache, and shot himself....that's just prime....
its funny because the first metal gear cover art for solid snake was based on MICHAEL BIEHN. I wonder if snake has some KYLE REESE IN HIS BLOOD BESIDES KURT RUSSEL
If you're a fan of both franchises you'll notice maany references in MGS from character concept and traits to actual plot structures, the basic arc and key points of all the games, and many other subtle things
Oh and to that guy, in MGS2 - the psuedonym Iriquois Pliskin that Solid used, It was Iroquois that means snake in algonquin..funny too since they crash into manhattan, the native region for algonquins haha, but perhaps the altered name pliskin
Kojima annoynced in a interview that he was obssesd with the way Plissken broke the normal rules of being a hero and based his Solid Snake character on him. In fact if you ever played MGS2 snake uses the Alias Plissken to hide his identity...
Hideo Kojima is a movie buff, if you pay attention to the MGS series alot of characters and missions are from related movies, the whole MGS series was made to be like the 80s james bond movies, so MGS is just like all the badass movies put into one great video game series. thats it. metal gear is my favorite series of games btw.
A lot of the names in MGS are names from 2001-A space odyssey , which Kojima has said is one of his favourites.
In the bad ending of MGS, Snake and Hal end up on the skidoo and Snake reveals his name is David. Hal says:"Dave and Hal", and Snake replies:"Hey, maybe we should take a trip to Jupiter one day." In 2001 the movie, the commander is called David Bowman, but is called Dave and the computer Hal9000 is called Hal. Also in MGS2 the oiltanker is called Discovery=(the spaceship in 2001)
Well, Revolver Ocelot is more a tribute to the 60's western movies with Clint Eastwood. Also Ocelot is very fond of classic westerns, and uses a Colt SIngle Action Army, a typical western gun.
Anyway, Metal Gear Solid 1 and Escape from New York has a very similar plot. Ex-warhero sent on a mission he has been forced to accept. Infiltrate an hostile area, to rescue a president he doesn't care about, and then there's the time limit too in both...
Metal Gear references Bond films in general, like how Snake deals over the top villians with secret bases and hoards of disposable henchmen, nuclear waepons, femme fatales, and uses cool gadgets it also has touches from 80's action films like Rambo.
i've had a taste of a few of the Metal Gear Solid games. But they still differ from Syphon FIlter, to me.
I guess it's mainly cuz Gabe and Snake sound alike. i cannot be convinced that SF is a ripoff of MGS. their release dates are only a few months apart.
yes, but Bond's gadgets always were over the top and ahead of time, whereas Snake mostly uses real weapons
Bond always has wise cracking remarks and always looks great in the end, like it's another day's work for him, not to mention he always showed great interest in all women, whereas Snake is a loner that has no friends save for colonel Campbell. Rambo never used stealth sneaking but stood in the open moving down thousands of enemies. Rambo cared for politics, Snake hates it.
just look at the front cover of the old metal gear game he looks like reese from terminator and theres stealth plus a few other things as to why i think its almost like metal gear
that will be kojima and escape from new york. mgs and escape from ny are two worlds very different, and the only thing which is extremely similar between them is snake (solid is based in plissken)
Sort of - I saw many things about the movie that could have inspired the premise of Metal Gear... Snake's battle-hardened, distrustful personality in MGS, the premise of a single, extremely skilled warrior going into an armed fortress alone, having to find supplies and help on the way, the idea of it being better to sneak past the guards instead of engaging them all head-on, Snake being lied to by his superiors - even FOXDIE. They are very different; but one def. gave birth to the other. ^_^
Hideo Kojima has listed this as a favorite movie of his. The name "Snake" became the reason for Solid Snake's name, and the name "Plissken" was used in MGS2.
Hideo Kojima is a big fan of Escape From New York and has never hidden the fact that the film influenced his MGS games. He even sent a letter to John Carpenter when Metal Gear Solid was first released... and Carpenter absolutely loved the game :-)
Yes, you're right. David Hayter IS Solid Snake in terms of voice.
I've always thought Sean Bean would be excellent as Snake. The only problem is that he's English, though I'm sure he could change his accent for the role.
The bass line of metal gear OST is clearly inspired by Carpenter movies' ones.
Thanks to make me realize it !!

Y'know I like anime & Escape from New York.
Part of me is thinking...
"I could mess this up REALLY bad, if I do it wrong!"
Of course the fandom is telling me...
"It can be done but it needs to be done in the right way!"
Because, using the same atmosphere, character silhouttes & general salvage vs. high-tech is a no-brainer. It all comes down, IT CAN BE DONE but HOW???
