It's one way. The more traditional way is to use a piece of dowel to fret the strings and pluck them with a goose feather. I prefer to use fingering - and you'll see both styles on YouTube. :-)
My grandmother sang this song for me as a child. She was Cajun French and as far as I know it was the only English I ever heard her speak. I was told she could speak it but just refused to do it! Beautiful rendition on a beautiful sounding dulcimer.
It's a beaut. The face is English walnut with poplar back and sides, and fretboard & inlay of purple heart wood. Dave Sewell from Baltimore is a great maker. :-) Will

What an excellent interpretation of such a simple melody. I'd love to hear your take on"Go tell aunt Rhody".
How are your strings tuned, what kind of strings are you using, and where is your instrument from?
FriendlyBotanist 3 years ago 2
I'm using the DD-A-A tuning (the 1st string is doubled up). The instrument was made for me by Dave Sewell, an instrument maker in Baltimore. :-)

Hi Will!
Thank you for this excellent Grandfather clock.
It takes special dedication and perseverance to get this level of interpretation.
Best regards

You have made something special of a song that's--well--a tired old chestnut. And yes, that dulcimer has a very fine tone.
