As of today - 2010 May 4 - there is still no commercially available & affordable ($10,000 to $20,000) electric-only vehicle in the United States that is allowe to drive on all roads that gas cars can. It is sickening. All the fault of the oil companies & big automakers all those who support them: everyone who votes for a Democrat & Republican instead of a Socialist, Green or Libertarian.
I tink the reason car manufacturers don't make good electric vehicles is that they're far more reliable and cheaper than gas vehicles. So, why invest in a technology that will give less benefits (to the car manufacturer of course) than gas technology, not to speak about selling spare parts. I think that the electric vehicle will not come from a traditional stablished motor company.
looks like a nice car wish i could have made the show.
did u see the lincvolt car neil young the singer is trying to build?i'm betting the possibility of a 100 mpg 1959 lincoln could be done.i thank neil young for putting his money time and life into this.
he needs our support as much as the world needs his right now i think.
This car goes way below the capabilities of current electric tech. 8 hour charge time? Is that for 120V? What are they using, lead acid batteries (not deep cycle)? No wonder it has a shit range too. What a crap electric made by a more than capable car company. Disappointing.
The car was a testing phase though. You're assuming they made it for the general market, which they didn't. It was for research purposes. The car they mean to sell to the general market is the G4E which is based on the R1E but it's bigger and goes 200km/120 miles on a single charge. It also charges in 15 minutes to 80%. That's their progress in 1.5-2 years! 2 more years and you got a car that goes 300 km on a single charge and charges in 5 minutes.
Just make the same car,,light, sexy, cool to look at,,but instead of all that electric crap,,just put in a gas pwered engine, ehh,,and i hope it's a god dambed vee eight. three hundred cube's,heheh fuck the,,SAVE the earth crackheads,,mere man can never do harm to this massive lump we live on man,,,just another way to TAX,the shit out of us all, right,????
Anyone who thinks legacy auto makers will not go down this path does not understand competition nor economics... They just need to "fuel" their own conspiracy delusions.
It's just greenwashing. No legacy auto manufacturer will sell an EV. Legacy auto companies won't build them because EVs never need service. Look how big the service department is at every car dealer, and your out-of-wallet experience there. Much revenue at risk. They don't make money selling cars. They make money on service, like a printer company that makes money selling ink cartridges. Additionally, funds that hold auto stock often also own Oil. Check LIVEOILFREE on youtube on GM ownership
Just make it available to the public what is the big deal. there is already a demand for electric car . why be another GM or whatever. come on! THINK THINK for once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i drive 15 km to work and 15 km back home total 30km don,t forget you can get stuck in traffic with air condition ......I think i only need to charge once good for me.canada montreal also has winter we consume more than south people think about that new challenge
The car goes 65 mph and the range is 50 miles. HOWEVER, it can be recharged in 15 minutes!!!!! An overnight charge of 8 hours brings the batteries to full capacity. I'd buy one IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!
LESS thasn 40 miles, maybe 10 years ago. average commute here around LA is 70 miles.
Yes the Phoenix & MILES rapid charge in 10 mins but you need 480v 500 amp commercial service to do it. and $45K, get the price down below 30K Ill buy it tommorow!
Moron reporter, most Americans drive less then 40 miles a day, therefore 50 miles range is PERFECT for oh abdout almost 85% of Americans. I heard Subaru was eventually going to sell these to the publis, as I am anxiously awaiting to buy this car immediately. No financing, cash in hand Subaru. I only drive 34 miles a day max, this vehicle is PERFECT, please sell it!
I wonder if you could upgrade the batteries to increase the range? Would still be primarily a commuter car but you would be able to run errands from one side of town to the other if you could increase that range to at least 75 miles that would be even better. The Mitsubishi electric car has 100 mile range. Interlocking board of directors, Exxon/GM and battery manufacturing companies? Suppressing R&D on better battery technology? It's happened before.
The word is out . US car manufacturers and their big oil cohorts has stifled these for long time. Asia is not beholden to these megalomaniacs who think they can control the world in cahoots with Middle Eastern despots. Just watch!! You will be buying cars without use of Middle Eastern oil in the next 3-5 years!!!!
Talk about ignorant reporting. This reporter focuses on an 8 hour charge time but TOTALLY avoids comment on the fact the car runs nano tech batteries that I'm sure cost Subaru Millions to develop that can reach 80% of full charge within 10 mins.... and solve the exact problem this bloke says the car has.... that's disgraceful reporting!
"Subaru claims the batteries can be charged to 80 percent of capacity in only 15 minutes and fully charged in eight hours on standard household current."
Don't know why it wasn't included in the video though.
It's mainly misleading laypp b/c many don't know that there are rapid charge capabilities in EVs. I have always cited the 10min charge/100miles already in hawaii. This kind of charging can make EVs as practical as normal cars even w/ less range.
Using an industrial type charger it's possible to get to 80% full in about 10 mins. It wouldn't take 8 hours to fill the rest, maybe another 10 mins. It's to do with how battery chargers work. With nano tech batteries (like in this Subaru) you can dump alot of current into them when they are flat , but all battery chargers slowly reduce current as the batteries gets close to full. An 8 hour charge is on a low current 110v/15a household type connection that puts out maybe 1.5kw per hour.
i think its good because they are given them to governments which means they can suffer with it

The G4E also has no side view mirrors due to rear view cameras for fewer blind spots.

Don't worry. This car wasn't meant for the market. Lookup G4E.
