Ophelia's voice alone really captures the emotion! I have uploaded a video of that same soliloquy, but could come nowhere near reaching the same emotion that this actress did! Loved this! :)
Oh, wow, this is magnificent! Jacobi is fantastic! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have the Branagh, the Tennent, the Burton and the Gibson (my favorite). I thought those four to be the best I had any knowledge of. I never really wanted the Olivier or the Hawke (bleah!) or other less-known productions I knew of. But I didn't know about this one...whoo hoo! :D
@LegoDaleks ??? Ophelia was young, therefore, the actor should be young. I don't care if they "teenagers" haven't have enough experience, I'm just saying, it would be cool to see someone younger.
@LegoDaleks Ophelia wasn't 29 you big doofus. The actress could have been younger, I don't understand why you're arguing with me when it was just MY OPINION that the actress should have been younger. Holy eff, get a life, cry me a river, and go drown yourself in it.
@causedhope In my comment I clearly said that Lalla Ward was 29 during this you small doofus. Actors need a certain amount of experience to do Shakespeare properly. 29 should be the youngest.
Why go all immature on my ass? I should drown myself just because I don't agree that a 29 year old Lalla Ward is an old woman?
@causedhope I'm pretty sure that experience sort of does, which was my point. Raw-talent amounts to little without skill. Skill is something you acquire over time with experience.
she was an absolutely terrible ophelia, but I thought his portrayal of hamlet was quite well done... he isn't my favorite, but I like his sarcastic and bitter tone... it doesn't come across well with most actors, and i think he pulled it off
This is one of the best versions of the nunnery scene--I saw the Mel Gibson and Kennath Barangh versions for my english class of this scene. By ranking, I would go with BBC, Barangh, and Gibson (I don't like the third as much). But Lalla Ward truly brings out Ophelia the best--I find that Helena Bonham Carter and Kate Winslet too strong to be a devastating character like Ophelia.
Jacobi was amazing! I have watched several different versions and I understood new things from watching this interpretation that had not been clear to me before. There is so much subtext happening here, but nothing is played too much (no over making out with Ophelia, just that one embrace)
Excellent, I have this on a DVD and like this version very much; Derek Jacobi is great in everything he does; he was great again in Kenneth Branagh's production, playing the role Claudius. I still enjoy the Branagh version more because I find this one a bit stark and more stagelike but it certainly is an amazing performance, a true gem. Thanks for posting this.
Never thought much of Derek Jacobi's acting. He was even bad as the Master, but no one can place the bar as low as Simm.

I don't like the actor for Ophelia, she's too old.. not young enough..

@causedhope You've been watching too much modern TV with all it's teenage casts. Teenagers haven't enough experience to do Hamlet.

@causedhope Lalla was 29 when she did this, I think. How much younger does an actress need to be?

A great, shocking performance by Derek Jacobi. No other Hamlet can bring tears to my eyes like this one!

Uno de los grandes Hamlets, para mi punto de vista, es el Derek Jacobi. Adoro esta versión y esta interpretación.

He's the best Hamlet ever, I love this scene and his way of saying: "Well, I humbly thank you" after the ironic/hysterical laugh...

He was the only one to get Hamlet consistently accurate. Some bits I didn't like but in general he was the best of all of them!
