You guys all need to look into Paul Schrader's work. All of the movies he's done have been just as deep and intense as taxi driver: Light Sleeper, Mishima, Hardcore, American Gigolo, Affliction even Cat People. The man is SUPER underrated. He also wrote Raging Bull, Bringing Out the Dead and Last Temptation for scorsese.
If you are looking for quality, original, hassle free, inexpensive, legal soundtrack music for your next Youtube video or short film....try "Rumblefish Friendly Music" Just follow the link in the "About Me" section on my page. Only $1.99 per track. (Some good songs...not just library music)
Greatest movie ever ...I wish easy Andy became a movie lol there's a kid I know a lot of you don't like hip hop but he raps by the name easy Andy in dedication to taxi driver YouTube "easy Andy EDK high quality goods" he's great
All you may think you know about this film is nothing but pure bullshit. This film was commissioned by the late pederast director Stanley Kubrick as a means to defame the true character of the person who made national headlines by actually accomplishing the rescue which serves as the one redeeming value of this sensationalist film. In return for stealing the wind out of the actual taxi driver's sails these three rats then put a mafia hit on him which although proved near fatal failed miserably.
@freezazoid yea he had, but he's referring to when he tried to get involved with the project around 1971/ 72 as it had been written then. Julia phillips never took him that seriously until he had success with mean streets, then Paul Shrader wanted him and Deniro as a team who had success with the godfather part 2.
"Listen you fuckers, you screwheads, here's a man who would not take it anymore, who would not let... Listen you fuckers you screwheads, here's a man who would not take it anymore, a man who stood up against the scum, the cunts, the dogs, the filth, the shit. Here is someone who stood up."
The whole question of one era of filmmaking vs another can be put alot more simply than people think. In my humble opinion the late 60's until the early 80's was the golden era of American cinema. Whilst many may diasgree and claim films today are as good, what those people have to accept no matter what is that movies like Taxi Driver CAN NOT be made today. It just can't happen. Studios don't dare cover such dark material. There's no argument with that point.
@bpatrice49 Yes they can, there is no level of violence that can't be accomplished in film today or any subject too risky. You should watch more movies.
@charmander4533 Please give me an example of a mainstream film with mainstream hollywood stars in it that could be considered in the genre of Taxi Driver? The violence is not the point. These types of dark character driven films seldom ever get made in mainstream hollywood anymore. The character film died out after the 70's
@bpatrice49 That's definitely not what you first said. You were complaining that hollywood couldn't make a film this dark anymore, when there is clearly no level of violence or horrifying concept they wouldn't make. It's not that they can't make a good character piece because they're afraid, there are just very few with the talent to do so.
@charmander4533 Yeah. I didn't mean to imply that Hollywood cannot protray violence like this anymore, since cinema grew collectively more violent throughout the 80's and 90's. I think that films covering the really harsh/dark side of life(like Tazi driver/badlands/Midnight cowboy etc) are films that don't get made anymore. I put it down to who controls cinema now, relative to the 70's, which in hindsight was a crazy period.
@charmander4533 You f*cking moron! Any major studio has to green light a project in order for it to be made. hence why mainstream big budget and indie cinema have so little in common. The studio system in America/Hollywood is vastly different today than it was in the 1970's. So by 'control' I mean have most influence and say in determining what gets made.
@bpatrice49 Movies have the exact same problems today as they did at any time in the past whether it's 30 years ago or 60 /books?id=lU4EAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA102#v=onepage&q&f=false
@MiKKA335 Any "intelligent" movie-watcher should understand that films, like all art, is subjective. "Shawshank" is a nice film and I like it; however, I personally don't find it as interesting as "Taxi Driver," "There Will Be Blood," "Papillon" or others of the like.
@schnoepie I think "Pulp Fiction" is a fine film but calling it the single greatest movie of the last 30 years? That's hardly a fact.
the atmosphere in which these films are made has changed. i think there's a certain atmosphere that goes with the great films of the past. the personality of the community of filmmakers: actors, directors, writers, producers, etc. is different from what it is now. i think that's why scorsese's picture the departed is not as good as his old stuff. i mean whats the standout film right now? the hurt locker? avatar? these two films barely having anything classic about them.
@tbtbtwotwos That's what people said in the 1970's, that the older films were more stylistic. Their are plenty of rcent films out there right now, few as they are, that are worthy of classics: There Will Be Blood, The Social Network, No Country For Old Men, United 93. Remember, the 1970's had a lot of great films, but also had a lot of crap films like today.
@mattknowsfilm Lol, United 93 a classic... The Social Network, There Will Be Blood classics? These are very flawed movies and nowhere near being classics. The past decade had very few truely great movies. Even the 90's were a lot better and the 70s was filmmaking heaven, especially compared to the past ten years. Think about it this way. Can you name recent movies in the same league as Pulp Fiction, Goodfellas, The Shawshank Redemption, Terminator II, Short Cuts, Seven, The Usual Suspects, etc.
Pulp Fiction is probably the single greatest movie of the past 30 years, with the most recent movie coming close to its brilliance being Raging Bull. TII, Short Cuts, Seven (wether you like m or not) were original pieces of art, groundbreaking movies. Anyway teh '90 had a movement of truely original and gifted auteurs: QT, Linklater, PT Anderson, Zwigoff, Clark, Solondz, Wes Anderson, Charlie Kaufman, etc. The past decade has not given us any interesting new filmmakers,

Thank God for the internet! I'm sure you would all be interseted to know that these two creeps Deniro, and Scorsese stole the idea, the story, and the main character from a real Taxi Driver and from an actual incident that same person was involved in back around 1970 when he and the girl he rescued were both thirteen and fifteen.
They were ordered to make this film by the late film director Stanley Kubrick who I was introduced to by the late Diane Arbus in 1964.
