  • Dr. Zubrin should team up with Space-X.

  • No scientific project it "threatened if it doesn't get funding for not thinking the science through enough. That is why the 450 billion dollar plan failed and why Zubrin's 55 billion dollar plan may be shelved. it isn't an anti-exploration arguement. What gets me is supercomputers are on everyone's desktop. There is nothing preventing anyone with coming up with a common sense approach to exploring Mars. Make it an open source project and skip NASA. The best plan will win in the end.

  • I hate to see politics seep into concepts like these. "Threat to their projects..." These people, NASA scientists and engineers, are supposed to be all for exploration! They are supposed to be the descendants of the Apollo teams! Current NASA leadership is a shame, unworthy of their place. I understand we have budget issues now, but we better see progress when our economic woes subside. Hopeful astronauts and engineers have wasted their lives waiting for this sort of project. Let it come!

  • We need to get up off our duster and push our technologies to the limit. Nature has worked on humanity for millions of years. Let's proove it. be the first species to leave this planet and colonize the solar system. People risk their lives Mt Everest, the ocean, scateboarding... We are wasting our time on iPods, iPads, cell phones. The minds of the people are our greatest assetts. Not the oil, textile or car industry. Imagine the technical job industry that would come about. • I think it is one of many plans. I don't get the purpose of traveling to Mars simply to put humans on the surface only to say hey look we saved $395billion. Of course, long term development of Mars certainly there would be a return of investment. The plan is great if you want to show off but it needs serious revision and negates the unknown technologies that will develop in the meantime dropping cost significantly. Clean drinkning water is more important.

  • @SuperBoogerhead True, but that is always the case when designing projects for the future. There will always be new technologies that could be incorporated, but at some point you have to find the tech you want and stick with it during development, and worry about new tech after the fact. The Army's Land Warrior was a perpetual project that died because they continually attempted to adapt the program to the latest and greatest. There will always be a latest and greatest.

  • I like the Mars semi-direct better

  • Zubrins Ideas are great... but there are a few things that need to be incorporated into his ideas.. like back up plans.. and first get a sample return mission.. u know we need to know whats in the mars soil before we send humans..
