  • I heard you reference your website. I was dissapointed that I couldn't find a link to it anywhere. Hook me up?

  • @Pommy405 If you Google Make More Noise you'll find it.

    James

  • Thanks -Very helpful - Nice job

  • @joewhitemusic Thanks, pleased it was useful.

  • Ok, but how do you find the component folder in OSLion?

  • @RawRib Well Lion hadn't been released when the video was made. And I haven't upgraded to Lion yet, so I'm loathe to offer advice I haven't tested personally. Having had a quick read up it seems the Components Folder is hidden in Lion, a quick google turns up a bunch of advice, but follow it at your own risk. When I update to Lion I'll revisit this topic properly.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir I found the folder a while after leaving the comment and I was able to install the plug-in. Thank you for the help and a good video!

  • @RawRib Cool, glad it all worked out and thanks for the kind words.

    James

  • where i can download some plugins? thank you

  • @berdmisha Hi, there's a list of free plug-ins on our site makemorenoise on the page of the same name, hopefully that'll get you going.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir Would I do the same thing in the video if I wanted to use FM8 as a plug in for logic pro?

  • @homelesspimps If memory serves FM8 has an installer programme, so it's a case of double click and follow the prompts. If you're still having problems contact Native Instruments tech support and I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction.

    James

  • can anyone recommend some good plugins?

  • @tailzz14 Hi, there's a list of free plug-ins on our site makemorenoise on the page of the same name, hopefully that'll get you going.

  • Ok so I do all the steps and my Plugin is in the Components folder. Now i go to inserts-->Audio Units and i go over an my plugins are nowhere to be found. And yes i did try to restart logic

  • @InfiniteGUNRR Hi, it's hard to help without some specifics, which plug-ins aren't there ? Without wishing to patronise a mistake I've seen a few times is that instruments are loaded from the I/O list rather than the insert, let me know if you need more ?

    James

  • everybody shows how to install effects. Unfortunately, I'm still struggling to find my AU instruments in Logic, such as synths like NI Massive etc.

  • @equaleyez187 The process for installing soft synths is exactly the same, so practically there's no need for two videos. The only time there's a difference is if the soft synth has an associated library of audio samples, unfortunately the method for installing those is different for each brand.

If memory serves Massive has an installer programme which means the installation is broadly "automatic".

If the problem is Massive contact NI's tech support and I'm sure they'll be glad to help.

  • Are there any AU Plugins you would recommend? I have Auto-tune Evo for James Blake-esque compositions and I don't know which others you think are worthwhile and useful. I noticed you had a huge library. Thanks.

  • @UnderTheAffluence I don't have any specific suggestions, what I do is shop from "needs" rather than "wants". So from a purely personal perspective, to Logic's stock plug-ins I'd add a good reverb, a character eq, a character compressor and a good master buss compressor, then I'd be good to go. Lot's of other stuff I "like" but nothing I "need".

Most of the reputable companies offer demos so you can assess whether they improve your work in you own environment.

    Hope that helps.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir Thank you for the advice. A character EQ, character compressor and bus compressor are good suggestions. I already have Lexicon Reverb which is effective, though I often use Logic's Space Designer (which I find hugely appealing). If you haven't used it before, PirateBay is very good for the famous plugins. I recently downloaded Waves, Absynth etc. Definitely worth a look, as the full program is always better than the demo.

    L,

  • Thanks you So Much! Just Saved The Day! =]

  • @br3ntst3wart Excellent, delighted to have helped.

    James

  • good nfo.

  • @Eumusic1 Thanks

    James

  • I just upgraded to Logic 9 and can see 3rd party AU effects just fine, but not AU instruments. I see them in the AU manager, but I don't see them in the library like I used to in Logic 8. I must be doing something really simple wrong, but can't figure it out.

  • @Zoolookuk Hi, I've never used the library to load my third party AUs, so I can't comment on how it worked in Eight, I'm on Nine on all my Macs, I load my AUs from the "input" slot in the channel strip, which is exactly the same as how I used to do it in Eight. Do yours appear in the drop down menu in the channel strip ?

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir Actually I figured it out only a few hours ago. The reason I couldn't see them is because Logic 9, for whatever reason, automatically populates the strip with an instrument and replacing it acts differently than in 8. As soon as you tell Logic to open up a blank strip, picking an AU instrument is easy and the same as in 8. Thanks for replying though.

  • @Zoolookuk Ah yes, Apple's strange assumption that all songs should be started with an electric piano! Never quite followed the "Logic" of that myself. I guess I should do a video showing how to make your own templates, so Logic starts up as you'd prefer.

    James

  • can yuh tell me how do yuh get and 3rd party AU instrument to work in logic??

  • @vibestouch1 Not sure I'm following the question, which AU is it ? In what way is it not working ? If you can add some specifics I may be able to help.

    James

  • Another helpful tidbit from JAM... thanks!

  • @Monarch441 Thanks for the comment.

    James

  • fish are friends, not food...lmao you sound like bruce! thanks for the video

  • @ETSJoshVoxx Glad you liked the video, not so sure I sound like Bruce, he's Australian and I'm very English. I had to Google the quote to find out who I was being likened to.

    Thanks for getting touch.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir im sorry man haha it just reminded me of bruce idk why, but thanks for the video! :) subscribed :D

  • @ETSJoshVoxx Not in the slightest offended but always amused by the confusion of the English and Australian accents, they sound so different to me. It's happened to me in the flesh in Los Angeles as well, so it's not that unusual. Thanks for subscribing!

    James

  • how do you install an instrument plug in? not an effect

  • @DJMoocher If the plug-in doesn't have an installer, it's exactly the same process. Unfortunately not all plug-ins are the same, so you could have a plug-in that has additional files, such as audio samples, in which case the method will be specific to that plug-in. In which case contact the manufacturer who'll know best.

    Which plug-in is it ?

    James

  • fanx but from where do u download those AU files i couldnt find any site to download AU there are VST sites but no AU if u know a sıte please write 2 me my fb is /LSwagga.B

  • @SouthSideRyderz3 Hi, AUs are a pretty popular format, most manufacturers that make plug-ins support the format. All the videos we have done that feature free plug-ins include the information about where to download and on the MakeMoreNoise site we have a page "Free Plug-Ins" that again includes the links. And of course you can Google AU plug-ins for a much more comprehensive list than we could ever manage.

  • Thanks you man i appreciate

  • Thankyou so much man :) Really helpful vid!

  • @BlackHoleHeroin No problem, pleased that it helped.

    James

  • Thank you

  • @Matt3II Glad to do it!

    James

  • I love u men thanks for the tutorial

  • @machete4 Pleased to help, thanks for getting in touch.

    James

  • THANKS

  • @ninjadrummerman No problems, glad you liked it.

    James

  • hey bro... listen can u make a tuto about how to intall auto tune in logic plz n thanks man

  • @shumo4 Hi Sorry, that's a bit specific for us, we try to do things which are more general, useful to more people. Broadly Autotune is easy to install, download the latest version from Antares' site, it comes with a bundled installer package, so double click and follow the prompts on screen. If you have any problems contact Antares' tech support I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

    James

  • Thank you.. I just bought a Macbook pro and I am IN love with Logic... Rip Windows

  • @ArGyProductions Sounds good, I'm sure you'll have fun with it.

    James

  • thanks. very helpful!

  • @munk18 Thanks for getting in touch, I'm pleased it helped.

    James

  • awesome video man, very helpful. but for some reason this is only working with effects plug ins that ive downloaded, as opposed to some of the synthesizers that i got from the site in the video (elek7tro and uno-6). any thoughts?

  • @expresstrain Forgive me if this is patronising but it's come up before. Effects plug-ins and instrument plug-ins are selected in different areas of the channel strip. Effects are selected under "inserts", near the top if the channel and instruments are selected under "I/O", near the bottom of the channel. Just above the output assignment, where you'd select the input on an audio channel. If that's not it come back to me ?

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir man, ive been using logic for years and i didnt even think of that. haha. thanks very much!

  • @expresstrain Excellent, pleased you got it sorted.

    James

  • Cheers that was very handy and has anyone told you that you sound exactly like Peter Jones from dragons den..

  • @MatthewRogerBailey Ah, erm, curses my secret identity is out. Seriously though thanks for the comment.

    James

  • Jesus this is Helpfull! Thankyou :D

  • @MusicalMuppet Excellent, glad you found it useful.

    James

  • I installed BFD2, which has an installer. Verified that the installer did indeed place the component file in the right folder, restarted Logic but it's not listed in the AU plugins menu when I go to insert it into an instrument track.

  • @SatansMama666 Bit like the last answer, does it show in Logic's AU manager and what does it say ? Are the Audio Units the right version ? So for Macs with Motorola chip, ( G3, G4 and G5 ) they would be AUs but for the newer Intel Macs they'd need to be Universal Binary, which is confusing as they're both AUs.

Failing that contact Fxpansion, they have good tech support and a forum.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir Thanks for responding. I was trying to add it as an audio plugin, but it wasn't listed there because it's a software instrument -or at least I think that's what the deal was. I found it under I/O.

  • @SatansMama666 Cool, glad you got it sorted.

    James

  • I see you also installed rough rider, fuzz, king dubby... i used all these free plugins before but my hard drive failed. When i got a new one i reinstalled them exactly like you but when i launch logic it cant/doesnt find them, i tried force searching for plugins by dragging the com.apple.audiounits.cache file to the desktop but still nothing. other plugins with installers work fine.

    any idea how to fix?

  • @MightyBass101 Not specifically but things to check would be, does it show in Logic's AU manager and what does it say ? Are the Audio Units the right version ? So for Macs with Motorola chip, ( G3, G4 and G5 ) they would be AUs but for the newer Intel Macs they'd need to be Universal Binary, which is confusing as they're both AUs.

    Hope that helps.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir they dont even show up in the AU manager when i reset/rescan. and i have installed them before on logic express 8 and now im using logic pro 9. installed them the exact same way and they just dont show up.. i think you may be right about compatibility issues... ill get back with more info

  • @MightyBass101 To check which type they are locate the plug-in in the component folder and select it, then hit the "Apple" and the "I" keys. This opens the Info box, under the general triangle you'll see "Kind". PowerPC is for G3, 4 and 5s, Universal Binary is for both and Intel is for the latest macs.

    James

  • love your voice and accent....i could listen to you for hours...ever think about doing a book on tape? : )

  • @BartsBeatz Thanks for the comment, you are far too kind !!

    James

  • this is actually doing my head in i want to punch my mac ive tried everything and still nothing comes up on the drop down list i want to install massive, vanguard, nexus2 and reinstalled al these multiple times, ive even reinstalled logic i just do not know what the fuck to do any help?

  • @sublocal I'm not familiar with Vanguard or Nexus but Massive comes with an installer, so it should just be a case of double clicking the installer package then following the prompts. A few other things to check, if you have a newer Mac ( Intel chip ) you need the UB ( universal binary ) of the plug-in. You can check this by clicking the Apple key and I ( letter I ) when clicked on the programme. You can also use Logic's AU manager to see if the plug-in passed. After that contact tech support !!

  • @JamesAndrewMuir it has the UB and the plugins show up in the AU manager but for some reason not in the insterts drop down thing. so are you saying the plugins arent compatible?

  • @sublocal If the the plug-ins are UB and showing as " successfully validated" in the AU manager they are compatible. I'm just going through the possible reasons they may not show up, it's tough to do this remotely. I know that Massive is fine, it's on my system, as I said I'm less sure about Vanguard and Nexus as I don't own those.

Without wishing to patronise are you selecting them in the right place ? Instruments are selected at the bottom of the channel strip above the outputs.

  • @JamesAndrewMuir it has the UB and the plugins show up in the AU manager but for some reason not in the insterts drop down thing. so are you saying the plugins arent compatible?

  • hey,

    a very good tutorial!

but i have one question: how do i install celemony melodyne editor?

i did everything you did and found a file called "Melodyne editor.component" and next to it one called "MelodyneBridge.component".

according to your way of installing a plugin everything should be fine, right?

could you tell me what´s wrong despite of that?

    thank you very much!

  • @mickey5241 Hi, If memory serves Melodyne comes with a "proper" installer, so you shouldn't have to drag the components to the plug-ins folder, you just run the installer programme and then it's automatic.

I think your best bet would be to download the latest versions from Celemony's site and reinstall from scratch, if that doesn't work have a chat with Celemony's tech support guys.

    James

  • @JamesAndrewMuir thank you for your tips! actually it went automatically just a few minutes ago as i relaunched logic. then it said "scanning for audio units" or something like that, what it always says, and then it worked... ;-)

  • @mickey5241 Excellent glad you got it going, now go and make some music !!

    James

  • thanks mate, good tutorial x

  • @Moximix Always good to hear from the other side of the world !! Thanks for taking the time to get in touch.

    James

  • whats the link?

  • @TheLeonski Not sure I'm following the question, to find the plug-in in the video just Google Togu Audio Line.

If that's not what you mean come back to me ?

    James

  • Thanks for the help!!

  • @caro77decks No worries, glad to do it.

    James

  • Apologies if this is patronising but sometimes it's hard to interpret from a written description.

It sounds like you need to open an software instrument track rather than an audio track, then open the instrument from the rectangular box above the output assignment box.

So coming down the channel strip from the top you have, inserts, then sends, then I/O, you want the blank box above where it names the output ( for example out 1-2 )

Then in the menu select AU instrument you want

    James

  • this is helpful. I have several plugin Instruments in the correct folder you show on the hard drive. However I can only open effects plugins when I click Inserts. I am trying to open Massive and Minimonsta in Logic 8, but they dont show up when I click inserts, what should I do

  • you man are awesome! thank you!

  • @munk18 And you are far too kind!!

    James

  • Yep, Thanx for video-help. I tried to follow instructions, but did a mistake, and here I saw what did wrong. Thanx a lot. :)
