i used linux for 5 months and then i stopped. you know why? because the linux community sucks. to them it's all about having an epeen, and not about the OS. they hang around in irc channels all day sharing screenshots.
windows may not be perfect but it works and when i have problems, they're always easy to fix. i don't have to visit irc channels and forums to meet guys jacking off to screenshots.

It's a shame you judged an entire community just from people going gaga over how pretty their screens looked, but understand something about these guys: For years they had the best OS, but when they'd show anyone, their friends would point to their Macs or Windoze boxes and say "but mine looks pretty!" It's the lingering after-effect of an enduring graphics inferiority complex. They'll get over it one day. Come back to Linux. Why? M$ is evil.
The only think you're wasting is your time with Linux. Why not be practical and use an OS that can actually run software? I see Linux won't be having Steam, and it still doesn't have uTorrent. (Not to mention a million other mainstream programs)

@nordahl154 Ubuntu is naturally fast, unlike Windows 7, and without the security holes. Hope you have your antivirus and firewall up and running. Ubuntu needs neither.
If you think that playing with computers is a waste of time, then stick with Windows. It sounds like you wouldn't do too well with a Linux distro. Linux is for people who like to tinker.
I use both. Unless I'm playing games, I use Ubuntu. For me, playing games is all Windows is for. Have fun with your illegal copies of it

Misro$oft designs their OS to be buggy and insecure (I think they do it on purpose) so that you HAVE TO have a legit copy so you can get the patches and bug fixes that come out every few hours. Use Linux instead - be free!

I think we have seen all possible desktop configurations with compiz and Beryl and all that stuff. What would be nice would be a video of a Linux user actually DOING SOMETHING, instead of wiggling his/hers windows about.
Nice setup! I'm almost there. Just need to get those ripples and the widgets. How can somebody ever hate on Linux? It's by far the best OS, I switched over last year and I've never looked back. Windows feels old, not as intuitive, not as customizable, and slow! Some great games and Wine are Icing on the cake =D

In Ubuntu I go to Synaprtic Package MAnager and I find almost everything I want in juts five minutes.
Linux is a very flexible system. As it was said, everything depends on a distro and the hands. It seems that you configured a messed up one, I use Ubuntu, and everything works fine for me.

depends on the distro, for instance I use debian based packaging distros which tend to be very easy to set up. I have not had a single issue with it at all once, actually I've had more problems with windows in the past then linux and I've been a windows user for over 10 years, I've switched because I've grown tired of windows breaking itself time and time again. It's time for a different operating system to take the lead that's more stable and I can say Linux with Ubuntu as the distro can do it.

ive been looking EVERYWHERE for that effect, and everyone keeps misleading me to "animations-fucusing-wave" or "water effect" and neither have options for that.....
just install compiz fusion from your repositories (debian, Ubuntu) beryl is not supported and go to system>preferences>compiz-config then enable the water effects under effects.....I changed the keyshortcut (i.e. Sihft + f10) and it worked really cool!!!!

Ubuntu is quite possibly the greatest achievement of 'the community' in the past decade. You've probably never tried Ubuntu. I sympathize. I hated it until I was forced to sit down and use it. Go back to Fluxbox.
What is so great about ubuntu? I'm not trying to spark an argument here.. but it's just that: a user-friendly Debian-based OS.. Personally I use Arch and I love it more than Ubuntu because you actually get the feel of your system and have to install everything starting at the base. It's much like saying you could drive an automatic car or a manual; most would go with the automatic because it's easy and requires minimal setup. Me? I prefer the manual; they are so much funner to drive.

it is available in gnome, but compiz can be used in gnome, kde, kdemod, and xfce :) the only DE's it wont work in are the boxes. fluxbox,openbox,ratpoison, etc.
Where do you get that impression? LESS than 90% of desktops are on Windows (and it keeps sliding) and most of the world runs on Linux. TVs, Cellphones, GPS, NASA, at least half the internet uses Linux for servers. So how, pray tell, does Microsoft own the world?

I grew up using Windows too. I ended up switching because Linux proved itself to be simpler (the GNOME interface is much more logical) and more versatile on an overall scale.
If there's one reason to stay on Windows, it's for the games. Even then, that's changing.

At the most basic level, yeah, Windows does do what Mac or Linux do. After all, it's an OS. The problem is how it does things. The NTFS file system is one of the easiest things to corrupt on Windows, the updates are infernally long, not to mention that it slows down as you use it.
Really, Linux is an awesome OS. All it needs now is more support.
Also, I can run a decent number of modern games. Just not as well as on Windows.

It has been over a year now and I am still with Ubuntu. Love it so much and introduced it to all my neighbors in my building. They were so excited to know about linux that they gave me some of their troubled windows pc's to install Linux for them. They are so happy with it. Usually when ever there is an issue they call and ask me to troubleshoot. One them told me that I never get viruses anymore like windows, even if they clicked on an email with a virus attached.
This is not only Linux, is amuch more, like a x-server, window manager, desktop environment, and GNU software. Linux is only the kernel of that Operating Systems.

My 6600LE worked fine, if you have install issues it's probably not your video card. It's honestly not a very heavy drain on video. OpenGL is very efficient ^_^

I tried 4 distros, after 2 months i figured that the great features it DOES have are greatly outweighed by things like 0 compatibility with anything ever, shitty usb drivers, no codecs so you can go bum some off of your other lifeless friend, watch a console display error messages for no reason, having to manually edit config files, then i realized, it was a lot easier to go move away from the computer and get laid with windows when you werent manually editing everything on a really slow OS

In Ubuntu I go to Synaprtic Package MAnager and I find almost everything I want in juts five minutes.
Linux is a very flexible system. As it was said, everything depends on a distro and the hands. It seems that you configured a messed up one, I use Ubuntu, and everything works fine for me.

1. Yes, yes it can play games, I play plenty of popular titles on linux even if it not made for linux thanks to wine

depends on the distro, for instance I use debian based packaging distros which tend to be very easy to set up. I have not had a single issue with it at all once, actually I've had more problems with windows in the past then linux and I've been a windows user for over 10 years, I've switched because I've grown tired of windows breaking itself time and time again. It's time for a different operating system to take the lead that's more stable and I can say Linux with Ubuntu as the distro can do it.

just install compiz fusion from your repositories (debian, Ubuntu) beryl is not supported and go to system>preferences>compiz-config then enable the water effects under effects.....I changed the keyshortcut (i.e. Sihft + f10) and it worked really cool!!!!

There's nothing educational about installing everything using configure/make/make install, nor about Googling 24/7 on how to fix problems in Slackware/Arch.
Ubuntu is quite possibly the greatest achievement of 'the community' in the past decade. You've probably never tried Ubuntu. I sympathize. I hated it until I was forced to sit down and use it. Go back to Fluxbox.

What is so great about ubuntu? I'm not trying to spark an argument here.. but it's just that: a user-friendly Debian-based OS.. Personally I use Arch and I love it more than Ubuntu because you actually get the feel of your system and have to install everything starting at the base. It's much like saying you could drive an automatic car or a manual; most would go with the automatic because it's easy and requires minimal setup. Me? I prefer the manual; they are so much funner to drive.

That is a really nice feature to have but if you have enough ram. Or if you don't have a video card that isn't from a company that has descent drivers or has open source ones ( which in my opinion will benefit every one ). There is also one more thing about this feature just to let you know and if I'm wrong tell me but this feature is only available in gnome...

it is available in gnome, but compiz can be used in gnome, kde, kdemod, and xfce :) the only DE's it wont work in are the boxes. fluxbox,openbox,ratpoison, etc.

Where do you get that impression? LESS than 90% of desktops are on Windows (and it keeps sliding) and most of the world runs on Linux. TVs, Cellphones, GPS, NASA, at least half the internet uses Linux for servers. So how, pray tell, does Microsoft own the world?

That's a complete matter of opinion... I grew up using windows.... maybe it was here first, maybe it wasn't, I don't even know in compared to Linux... but I don't really care... Point is, windows was readily available and was the firs thing to get... and making a switch now would be frustrating and annoying because the difference between the 2 systems is so small that the only thing that people really have to decide on anymore is the interface. Which I've had the same for 8 years, and like it.

I grew up using Windows too. I ended up switching because Linux proved itself to be simpler (the GNOME interface is much more logical) and more versatile on an overall scale.
If there's one reason to stay on Windows, it's for the games. Even then, that's changing.

At the most basic level, yeah, Windows does do what Mac or Linux do. After all, it's an OS. The problem is how it does things. The NTFS file system is one of the easiest things to corrupt on Windows, the updates are infernally long, not to mention that it slows down as you use it.
Really, Linux is an awesome OS. All it needs now is more support.
Also, I can run a decent number of modern games. Just not as well as on Windows.

You probably hat Linux because you don't know how to use it or you just like the colorblue, because windows has allot of that. Don't get me wrong windows is a powerful OS but so is Linux. also, someone said that they see no point in the cube, the purpose of it is so that you can place different windows open on different sides of the cube. its extremely useful, i use it all the time. also, as you can see, mac leopard ripped off the "spaces" idea from linux, this video was released in may 2006, before leopard was released.
not only can you place your windows on different sides of a cube, but you can also put them on a big wall.

It has been over a year now and I am still with Ubuntu. Love it so much and introduced it to all my neighbors in my building. They were so excited to know about linux that they gave me some of their troubled windows pc's to install Linux for them. They are so happy with it. Usually when ever there is an issue they call and ask me to troubleshoot. One them told me that I never get viruses anymore like windows, even if they clicked on an email with a virus attached.

My 6600LE worked fine, if you have install issues it's probably not your video card. It's honestly not a very heavy drain on video. OpenGL is very efficient ^_^
My card does suck though... :D I'm getting an 8800GT soon tho ^_^

I tried 4 distros, after 2 months i figured that the great features it DOES have are greatly outweighed by things like 0 compatibility with anything ever, shitty usb drivers, no codecs so you can go bum some off of your other lifeless friend, watch a console display error messages for no reason, having to manually edit config files, then i realized, it was a lot easier to go move away from the computer and get laid with windows when you werent manually editing everything on a really slow OS

It crashes for people using "compiz --replace" because replace option uses Emerald but emerald haven't been updatedfor almost a year now...
You guys should just use compiz with no options... Anyway compiz is not yet at ver 1.0...
